Some UI Suggestions
I LOVE POSTBOX! I dumped Outlook Express and Windows Live Mail as they were just DOGS in IMAP GMail. Outlook wasn't even an option. I was resigned to living in the GMail web client until I read about your product on LifeHacker. It's fast, light and makes sense. Just a few UI suggestions...
1. Hyperlinks: Can't you just convert typed text into a hyperlink when it resolves correctly? Also, why is http:// required? A prefix of www should be enough. Just trap for the spacebar and see if the preceding text is a URL.
2. Send - when I send, I see a dialog box that shows sending status. Can't you just lose that and return to the main window? Make that asynchronous and show status on the main window's status bar or something. After I send, I want to move on to the next thing. Can't, with that dialog box in the way.
3. Attach File: I guess I'm used to seeing that on the Insert menu, not the File menu.
4. I'd love a way to hide the contact info pane to the right of the preview pane.
5. Search results: It confused my wife when she did a search: She couldn't figure out how to return to the full list. The little X button by the search textbox was not clear enough.
6. Gmail Labels in main grid: Is there a way to indicate the GMail labels for a message in a grid column? Being able to sort by that would be handy.
7. ToolbarButtons: Is there a way to use 'Selective Text, to the Right' for toolbar buttons? Putting the text below the image makes it taller, takes up screen space. We don't need text, either, for the New, Send, Reply, Forward, Delete, etc. buttons. T'would save some space.
Thanks!

Inappropriate? Thanks a lot for the UI feedback bimplebean! Lots of good stuff here.
"2. Send - when I send, I see a dialog box that shows sending status. Can't you just lose that and return to the main window? That's coming soon in a future update. We're still working on it.
"4. I'd love a way to hide the contact info pane to the right of the preview pane."
same here
"5. Search results: It confused my wife when she did a search: She couldn't figure out how to return to the full list. The little X button by the search textbox was not clear enough."
The home button will also clear your search and take you back to your inbox.
Will think on the rest of your suggestions when you have more time.
Thanks for letting us know that you heard about us from lifehacker. Always helps to see how folks get the word out. -
Inappropriate?Another question/thought: It seemed to me that OE/WLM spend a lot of time downloading other IMAP folders in the background - really slows things up. I like that Postbox doesn't download a folder until you select it, and stops when you leave. (At least, I THINK that's how it works.)
However, is there a way to say "download these folders in the background at a very low priority and/or only when I'm not busy?" It'd be nice to have that happen if I leave PB open and walk away for a while - then searching and indexing would be more complete.
I have about 40gb of mail in my GMail IMAP folders, going back ten years! I'm probably a good test case for something... [g]
Thanks!

Inappropriate?good news for you bimplebean:
http://postbox-inc.com/quickstart/#start
just leave it running and when you are away from your computer on idle we do all that in the background. as soon as you come back to your computer we stop.
