there should be a unified inbox
There should be unified inbox because I have 5 inboxes and it would be rather useful to have them in one inbox

Inappropriate?I tried to find where it was previously, but this has been discussed before.
Personally, I like it the way it is. I have a bunch of accounts as well (more than 5 ;-)), but i like the separate inbox approach. That way i don't see my work email mixed in with my personal email.
Mixing it together would hinder my work flow considerably. For me, this is one of the places that the Gather button shines. Conversations DO spread across accounts for me. the gather button works nicely to bring them all together when i need it too.
On the flip side, have a unified inbox for all my personal accounts would be nice. But i can't even begin to suggest an interface for handling that. in Mail.app i just the list of inboxes expanded and just handled them that way. -
Inappropriate?Have a look at Apple Mail - it has a combination of both. You have a unified inbox and you can "unfold" it for the seperate ones.

Inappropriate?Right now you can use the Global Inbox. i.e. Local Folders for multiple POP accounts. It is an option when setting up a POP account. A shared inbox does not make sense for IMAP accounts.
-
Well, I have only imap-accounts (I wanna have my mails synced between several computers, an iPhone and web-interfaces). The only thing I'd like to have is sth in the shown header that indicates to which mail-address a mail was sent for sorting it later more easily.
My workflow w/ mails right now:
Scan all the subjects, delete uninteresting ones, read the interesting ones and move them according to the mail-adress that received a mail and some personal criteria via keyboard to an appropriate imap-folder.
In Postbox I can't do that at once but have to do it for one mailbox, switch to the next one and so on.
And I don't see the point why it makes sense for pop3-mailboxes but not for imap ones. -
I think the POP account argument is not at all valid. I like having a unified inbox period. Why? Because I do not want to click on 5 different mailboxes just because I got 1 new e-mail to several e-mail accounts.
Why would I not be interested in a unified inbox for IMAP access? How I access my e-mail should have no impact on the needs I have for the user interface based on my mail activity. -
Yes, why would a shared inbox not make sense for IMAP accounts? It's virtual. Is there some conceptual difficulty? -
I also agree that this would make alot of sense. I have to separate email accounts that I sometimes use interchangeably (there are really good reasons for me to be doing this) with some people, but not with others. Both of these accounts are IMAP and it would be great to see them side by side instead of going from one to another. -
I have to agree with Jody -- having a unified view of all the mail in all the "Inbox" folders across multiple IMAP accounts makes tons of sense. As has been pointed out, this is a feature of the Apple Mail.app (and the most important real edge I think it has over other email readers). -
Yup - i agree. It makes a lot of sense to have a unified view for IMAP as well as POP. It need not be a view of a physical representation of the mailstore, but rather, a meta view that makes it easier for me to interact with the incoming stream. Google Reader has a similar view for inbound RSS. You can choose to "view all" or "view by source". This is really the same idea - "view all" or "view by folder". -
Why on earth would Brian just assert this without any argument? Apple Mail does indeed allow a single unified Inbox for IMAP and POP accounts, and it’s vital to me. As Nielsk says, it allows you to have both a single Inbox and “unfold” the individual accounts - the best of both worlds. In fact, this is the single greatest thing holding me back from switching completely. -
A shared inbox always makes sense, be it for POP or IMAP accounts. Just look at Apple Mail and M$ Outlook... -
I own an interactive agency, and I have 9 email accounts: my work account, 4 accounts I have on client systems, 3 external GMail accounts for recruiting, PR, etc., and a personal account. I use IMAP for them all. In Apple mail I always had the universal inbox expanded so I could see individual IMAP inboxes, but I consistently use the consolidated view and would love to see it as an option in Postbox. -
@Eric Lee
same for me - it's a great way to have all new incoming messages under control -
Again I have to reiterate that the assertion that this makes sense for POP but not IMAP is ludicrous. I'm here on Get Satisfaction searching for this feature to decide whether to go to postbox or not. This is the one crucial thing that is needed before I can switch. -
Inappropriate?Make an account "Unread mail" that would gather all unread mail in one global inbox...
Does this solve the question? -
Nope, that wouldn't solve. Because I usually have no mails in my inbox I let very important mail sit there for getting reminded of them every time I open my mail client.
Otherwise I would need a very good visible (smart) folder that shows me the count of the items in it all the times. But now there's a problem that I won't see those mails anymore on my iPhone or when I am using another mail program because I am at work where I have only access to Outlook or web interfaces. -
Inappropriate?Saved searches still have to be attached to an account and are buried in a folder.
It would be great if they had their own panel so they were always visible.
http://getsatisfaction.com/postbox/topics/saved_searches_get_their_own_panel -
You can make this issue somewhat better by selecting the saved searches you're interested in and setting them to favorites.
I've ended up emulating a unified inbox by adding a saved search folder to my "Local Folders" account. This folder includes all messages from all the inboxes for my various IMAP accounts. Then, I make it appear in the Unsent/Drafts/Templates/Sent/Trash top-level list by marking it as a favorite.
Yeah, it's not ideal, but it's a functional workaround for now. -
Inappropriate?Is this gonna happen?
-
I am guessing here, so I might be wrong, but Postbox has roots in Thunderbird which does not implement this so I am guessing that Brian King's response is the general opinion among the devs. -
Inappropriate? For me this is the day of unified messaging, what I personally want is one inbox for all messages whether voicemail, email, IM, To-Do's Etc.
And if the devs don't agree, make it an option. It can't be that difficult to include a View where they are all in one inbox. Having separate tabs really slows me down, I may have to revert to Mail.
-
Inappropriate?I'd be willing to bet that developing this request may be easier said than done, because the developers would have to completely rewrite the underlying TBird architecture to make it happen.
As for IMAP, since that protocol syncs messages, that may be easier said than done. If IMAP is trying to sync an account's In Box, and that In Box has unrelated messages mixed in, that might throw a wrench in the works.
HOWEVER, a Smart Mailbox/Save Search option that allows the criteria to be "anything in the following mailboxes" (select the In box from each account) doesn't seem like it would be too difficult to create. (Granted, I'm not a programmer.)

Inappropriate? That's my biggest disappointment coming from mail.app!
-
Inappropriate?Okay, this has gone on beyond ridiculous. Thunderbird 3 beta 3 supports a unified IMAP inbox now (which makes Brian's comment look increasingly bizarre). I was really hoping that Postbox would be better than just "Thunderbird that costs money," but the lack of responsiveness on obvious issues like this one makes me realize that's not the case.
I would have happily paid for a better email client. I'm disappointed that Postbox doesn't qualify.

"A shared inbox does not make sense for IMAP accounts. "
??? i'd missed that! :-( -
Inappropriate? It isn't perfect, but I did a search for <space> and chose my inboxes as the locations of the search. It works pretty well, except that the tab isn't "pinned" down (which would be a nice feature that either doesn't exist or I haven't figured out in 5 minutes of starting postbox)</space>

Inappropriate?Hey Gang,
I think it is safe to say that we will provide some type of universal inbox capability at some point, but it's hard to say precisely when.
We do realize this is a highly requested feature, so we'll try to slot this in sooner as opposed to later, probably in one of the earlier 1.x releases (e.g. 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, etc.) if all goes well with some other work currently underway. -
Thank you for the update! I look forward to it -- it will be a much better solution that my All Inboxes search workaround.
