Two lines in message list
If the vertical preview pane is implemented it is also absolutely necessary to have the option to display the message list as two lines per message like subject and size on the first line and sender and date on the second. Having only single line makes the message list look horrible if user wants to see more fields than just, say, subject and sender.
Or even better, make it customizable. Take a look at WideMail plugin for Apple Mail to get some ideas. This, the vertical view and one view for all inboxes are the deal breakers for me so far.

Inappropriate?I'd like multiple lines as well. Like how it appears in Outlook when using the vertical layout.

Inappropriate? Here's a screenshot of how it could look:

This is Microsoft Entourage 2008. Entourage was sort of the first "3 panel" look on Mac OS. I think they do an excellent job of displaying this. I would say that you wouldn't even need user selectable things in the "vertical" display. If you could at least just style it like this, it would be so much better than the situation now where that particular panel needs to be huge.
Hope this helps! -
Inappropriate?I definitely think this would be great. Something like WideMail implements for Mail.app would be perfect.
I’m confident
-
Inappropriate?yes! please.
Thanks -
Inappropriate?Yes, and the attachments panel can go at the bottom of message preview in wide mode to save some wide space!
I’m happy

Inappropriate?This should be an option.

Inappropriate? This seems extremely useful for the vertical view people ... but it also seems like it would be useful in the traditional view as well. There is only a finite space going across (especially on low resolution monitors). Having (or 3 or 4) lines per message could be useful, assuming it is completely user configurable.
It would basically kill clicking on a column heading to sort.
I dunno. Just thinking out loud.
I like the idea of being able to customize the message list, but at the same time i see a ton of usability issues that would be raised by it as well. Maybe it doesn't make sense in the traditional view. *ponder* -
Yes please, for vertical and horizontal views. -
Inappropriate?Yes please -- this is a MUST for the vertical view, without it it's worthless!
I’m disappointed
-
Inappropriate?I would really like this. So long as there is somewhere I can set the sorting, it does not have to be clicking on the headers. Multi-line view of the message list is far more valuable in far more cases than sortable headers.
I’m hopeful
-
Inappropriate?Yeah we'd love to be able to do this too. Right now we need some changes from our underlying platform to make this possible but it's something we'd love to do!
-
Inappropriate? Can we understand that you will be able to make this change after the moment (many years ago) it will be implemented in Thunderbird?

Inappropriate? This is an absolute must, as for me the lack of this feature is pretty much the only reason why I dislike Thunderbird.
-
Inappropriate?I really like the way postbox goes. But i'm missing one really important feature i can't live without: Multi-Line-View for the message-list in three-pane-view. I hope you understand what i mean? Outlook does this for example. Mail does this too with help of the plugin WideMailView.

Multiline mailview.

Inappropriate? What I am missing too is the option to customize the look and feel of the message list. For me I am missing lines between the messages for better reading purpose or some kind of color management to identify lines better.
Also the "Microsoft features" to group messages by week or days in the message list would be a nice option for better readability.
I’m happy

Inappropriate? This has been requested a long time ago for Thunderbird and it seems a lot code needs to be altered before this is possible. So it seems that while Thunderbird doesn't have this, Postbox won't either. :(

Inappropriate?I can't believe the 2 line in message list is not one of the first things implemented! It is the sole reason I pay for Office for the mac. It is the default view for most people who use Outlook at work (which is a LOT of people)
I have installed postbox now for the 3rd time as it looks good - but I keep deleting it.
