Why doesn't IMAP only download headers for new mail?
I thought an IMAP account like Gmail would only send headers, but when mail is collected, entire messages are downloaded. This is unfortunate when using a dial-up connection. Am I misinformed about IMAP?

Inappropriate?Hi Mike,
With imap just the headers are downloaded when new mail arrives. However if you click on the message the body gets downloaded.
Also, when you are idle postbox will automatically download the body as well in order to index it.

Ah hah! So that is the purpose of the IDLE setting. Thanks. I thought that IMAP only sent headers, but now I understand why the full message is downloaded. Thanks for your reply, Scott. :) -
