How much does Postbox cost?

I would hate if if I used it for some time, got used to it, helped it as a beta tester, and then learned that I have to pay to keep using it...

No way. This is a paid for product! I can't imagine anyone in their right mind spending time and energy on this product to make it free.

But that's just my opinion. Not that I would complain if it was... :)

I hadn't read that it was based on Thunderbird, but I'm not surprised because it definitely reminded me of it. Can you find the link about it?

Don't really care if its free or not as long as it works!

Good mail clients are hard to come by, and Apple's is so full of bugs its crazy. Plus, its cross platform, which is a huge boost when you have to switch computers for a couple days on a trip or something.

Thanks for the question and for everyone's thoughtful feedback. This question has also been raised in other topics, so I'll be redirecting them here.

We want to enable as many people as possible to enjoy the benefits of Postbox, while planning for ways to increase development capacity so that we can do more.

We're currently evaluating a number of different options, and while some are rather simple, others are much, much more complex and have a large number of external variables to work through and consider.

We understand that Postbox testers are anxious to learn more, so we'll be sure to post updates here and on our website as soon as we have more information to share. In the meantime, thanks very much for your patience.

Like i've said before, there is absolutely nothing wrong with them wanting compensation for their work. People have gotten too used to "free as in beer" (or nearly so) software.

If a piece of software is good, the developers need to be compensated for it. As long as they meet my needs (outlined in another thread(s)), and they release the pieces of the source code that they are obligated too (prior to their official launch), i have absolutely no issue with giving them my money.

They are extremely responsive, and have done a good job with most of the application so far. If they continue to do a good job and support their userbase, throw a couple bucks there way.
    • There is nothing wrong with asking money for software. The problem is that we all do beta testing and the company will use this beta testing to make the software ready to ask money for a licence and I don't know if I will buy it. Same stuff with promoting. I'm promoting Postbox to a lot of people but if the company will ask money for it, I was promoting the balance sheet of the company.
    • Most companies will offer discounts to their beta testers for a limited time, at least that has been my experience with beta testing (and i've been in a LOT of beta programs ;-P).

Problem is, by the time the software is released it isn't always useful anymore because someone else came through with something better first or it has changed so much through tester feedback that it doesn't make sense to switch from something else that is already developed.

Its going to be interesting to see how Postbox handles some of the complaints before releasing a 1.0 ... I'm starting to think that 2.0 will be the release that addresses most of the bigger issues (calendar, apple script, automator, spotlight, RSS improvements, etc ...).

Yeah, I too considerd moving to postbox until I found out, that it's not sure that postbox will be free in the future. There's nothing wrong with developers wanting a reward for there work, but with Thunderbird 3 on the way and strong players in the cloud, such as GMail, there's just no reason for me to switch to a product I'd have to pay for. But I'm not a busniessman.

Postbox may be awesome, but it has some serious competition with Thunderbird 3 and Apple Mail. I still chose it, though -- the features are amazing. Postbox's team is composed of several former Mozilla developers, and it's obvious that Postbox is based on Mozilla projects. Because of Mozilla projects have open source licensing under the Mozilla Public License, any derivatives must also be licensed under the MPL. This pretty much stops any chance of Postfix charging unless they completely rewrote the application from the beginning. All of that said, Postfix has some serious potential that most would be willing to pay for.
    • Postbox's usability is terrific. The problem is that the difference with Thunderbird is not so great and another question is "will Postbox stay ahead of TB". I don't know if I want to pay for the software. I noted the same with Eudora. The paid version was interesting but after a while other clients made Eudora obsolete and the money gone.

Thanks for your patience everyone, here is some additional information on pricing:

    1) We will be licensing a fully featured version of Postbox. We're currently evaluating a number of different options, and you can participate in the discussion by taking the survey that is now linked from the start page within Postbox.

How much will Postbox cost? We'll be announcing pricing once our survey completes, but our goal is to offer reasonable prices for Postbox in addition to upgrades, family packs, student discounts, and volume discounts.

    2) We will continue to explore options and user demand for a free, community version of Postbox. This version would most likely be advertisement-supported, or contain a subset of functionality from the full version, or a little of each.

We would very much like to release a community version, but there is no guarantee that we will. A second version of Postbox would introduce significant development overhead, and we would need to weigh the cost/benefits of such a release relative to new features that are already in high demand (many of which have been articulated here in Get Satisfaction). But we'll keep exploring this option as we would like as many people to benefit from Postbox as possible.

Again, we encourage you to help us determine the right product and pricing mix by participating in our survey.

If postbox will be licenced I hope you will give a lifetime license.
I don't buy anymore software which I have to upgrade for every new principal release or after a year like babylon, calendarscope, filelocator and much more of these.

I have bought a lot of this software and spend so much money that I could buy a major software suite as office.

There is more and more software now with a lifetime license.
The last I bought is super-antispyware.

I would consider to buy postbox for under $30 if lifetime license not for $29.95 and $25 for lifetime license.

And how do we know if Postbox will remain ahead of other email clients?
    • view 3 more comments
    • And honestly, with Google Wave coming, i may be moving away from "traditional" email completely ... or at least as much as possible. That is much more akin to what I've been looking for in a communication tool than email. email sucks, it will continue to suck, and all the new breed of clients are doing is adding hacks to an old system.

Postbox just seems to be doing it better than most everyone else at this point (at least their ideas are in the right place).

They will likely continue to do that as well, their priorities are off what mine would be though in their development. Its been a LONG time since there has been an update, i'm curious what R13 will bring us ... must be fairly substantial. ;-).
    • Thank you Sherman,
The direction you have taken till yet is the one let me choose Postbox as email client so we have a few things in common. For me it is important to know that there is a continue passion to make Postbox better in whatever direction it goes.

With the economy the way it is adding yet another "ad" based/for fee/buy me email client like Eudora (which was great at one time), which I loved the functionality if I did not have to close the program to get rid of the extra compose box every time. To come out and say after the initial statement that it was going to be free, that you are considering a fee. Bad form.

There are plenty of venture capitalists out there to fund dev. Just ask facebook and others.

You lost me with this move. It is still too buggy to be considered a sell able product even.

MicroSoft and Google are making free clients that meet and some times exceed the need.

I'll go back to open source....................................was nice beta testing.......

    • I've discovered Fluid recently and I think I've finally found something that works for me. Fluid is a tool for Mac which lets you create pseudo desktop applications (actually, special Safari instances) out of web applications. So I just made a Fluid instance for GMail and I have a GMail icon in my dock which opens a custom "gmail browser", and shows a badge if I get new emails. That's really all I need...

Good sw like PB needs to be supported! I've basically given up on TB (been using TB3).. their rate of development is slower than a slug, and PB's indexing and interface is already light-years ahead. Anything under $30 would be a bargain.

    Hi,

I'm using Gmail and GoogleApps since more 2 years and I realy don't like email-client like outlook, thunderbird or other. Hold, no "discution" view, etc.

Yesterday I realy falling in love of Postbox. Smart, ready for the new generation of email usage, great fonctions and new features, clean interface...just wow ! And complety compatible with IMAP and Gmail/hotmail/etc adress !

Incredible. And I have a question, when (approximatly) the final version will be released and how much it will be cost ?

The idea to based an email-client on mozilla thunderbird and to focus on the interface/features it's the best what you can do.

"Je vous souhaite une très bonne continuation !"

I know this has probably already been asked but what will PostBox cost when you exit beta? I don't want to "invest" a bunch of time and effort into using PostBox to find out later it's going to cost more than I'm willing to pay. I very much like what I see in Postbox but Mail has worked fine for me for going on 9 years so I'm in no big hurry to to replace it. Will definitely come down to price.

    Please let us know asap.

I rely heavily on some free utility programs and services, but for most of my applications I like a paid version better than a free one. Typically, the cost of a program is still a good deal for me when I get no advertising, a better designed and functioning interface, less bugs, more features, better support, less conflicts with my other programs, and future product development.

Several of my favorite software companies produce a free version of their applications and then one or two levels of paid versions.

For my use, I hope the several problems with Poxtbox get fixed and that along with a free version there is a paid version with most features and a pro version of Postbox to choose from — tomorrow.

I've used so many mail clients, some I paid for (Eudora, Mailsmith, Mulberry, AppleMail, Thunderbird) that if something really useful comes along I'm willing to pay. Postbox looks very good to me and makes me more productive. What I want most if for a great product to come along and last! As a very happy Eudora user it was sad to watch it fade away. Mailsmith simply won't do modern email, and AppleMail is too quirky for me, I just can't get it to work across different kinds of accounts in a consistent way. I have lots of accounts from different services and only Thunderbird could handle them all reasonably well. Now Postbox promises the good things of Thunderbird with a much better interface and features.

  • Sherman (Official Rep) July 28, 2009 14:56
    Hello everyone,

Today we released Postbox Beta 14 and announced product and pricing options for a fully featured, advertisement-free, premium version of Postbox. You can find the details of the announcement on our blog at http://postbox-inc.com/?/blog/entry/p...

We know that many of you may be disappointed (maybe even a little angry, mad, sad) that we didn't lead with a free version. Please know that an awful lot of consideration went into our roadmap, and although factors such as the economy have certainly influenced our thinking, our most important deciding factor was direct feedback from Postbox users. As we moved through the beta, it became very clear to us that the highest demand was for a full version of Postbox vs. a version with less functionality or advertisements.

So what's our plan moving forward? We're currently marching towards our 1.0 release, and there's more that we would like to do to improve usability, performance, and reliability. There's also a lot of demand for localized versions of Postbox, so we're working on getting the right frameworks in place for these efforts.

Finally, we'll continue to explore options for a free version of Postbox.

In the meantime, we do have Postbox on sale for $29. We think this is a great value, particularly for an application that many people use several hours a day. If you enjoy Postbox and believe that it improves your overall computing experience, then we hope you will consider purchasing the product.

    Thanks!
    • $29 for postbox isn't a great value, unfortunately.

It adds little value that Mail.app and Thunderbird 3.0 don't already have for free. And in the case of Mail.app on MacOS X people would be losing a considerable amount of functionality due to the, purposeful, omission of Apple Script support.

Sorry guys. I loved the potential that Postbox had/has ... but "Postbox notifies you and allows you to update the conversation." that's great for a beta product, but a full on 1.0 shouldn't bother you about it and just do it, seamlessly.

There is a thread floating around here somewhere with what I feel a 1.0 release of postbox should include. I stand by that original post. If you can manage all that, before the other companies catch up with a conversation view and tagging ... then it would be worth $30
    • I disagree - I think the postbox client is a nice change from what is out there already and the pricing is reasonable with the family pack. More importantly it is the only IMAP client I have used extensively that seems to consistently work.

Get a grip, would you work for free? Even if the software is based on a open source engine, all the added features are based on what people wanted, these features that are present are the work of several dedicated people who wants to have a sort of compensation for it.
For example; Microsoft let people use béta software for more then a year and to sell it afterwords when the job is done, plain and simple.
If I would design something that people could use, I would ask money for it.
Nothing for Nothing, simple is that!

Maybe I will pay in the future for a really good piece of software but at the moment postbox is not that it was signalised...
So I will wait a little more time and look what the community is processing with TB3...
    • TB1 was a good software, TB2 worse and TB3 an awful software.
They are adding more and more stuff without considering the interface.
Comparing with Outlook TB is a wonderful piece of software but Postbox is much better.
      The search function is unbeatable.
    • I have been in lots of betas as voluntarily like this (lots of games and other software) and later paid for them or chose not to pay them. I was generally aware that they will be paid products but always hoped that they wouldn't.
There is really nothing wrong for they wanting to be paid and imho I especially want to pay to a product which I can make suggestions which I know they will be looked and evaluated.

I don't have a problem with the price tag for Postbox. It is a great piece of software and that certainly deserves a price paid for it.

For me personally, I have to juggle my budget with what I am getting. Since I am a student, I am afraid I will have to abandon Postbox and the extra features that it provides for a email client that is free.

I don't think any less of Postbox for doing what they have done, that is just the reality of it all.

Well I think to pay for software like this really ok. What bothers me is the price, I suggest to price it let's say for $9.99, I think more people would be willing to pay for Postbox and you still may make a lot of cash :-)

Don't get me wrong but after fighting all those bugs, and helping you with the details of postbox, now we'll have to pay for it? Its based on a free platform for gods sake.

I'd really pay 40 bucks for postbox if i wasnt using it since early betas.

This will make people jump back to thunderbird.

happy I’m happy with PostBox and have just purchased a license while its discounted!
I've been using PostBox since the beta started.
I was having issues with Mail.app crashing on a regular basis, often leaving it it in a state where I couldn't re-open the app!
Mail.app seems to dislike a large amount of emails across multiple IMAP accounts.

PostBox on the other hand handles my mail very well! (lots of mailing lists)

I've just purchased license along with the lifetime upgrades option, the total come to approx. £35.00 GBP... I think that's a very fair price, especially with the lifetime upgrades.

I can't believe there are people here who are actually complaining about having to pay for PB..

Regardless, I'm still not sure postbox is ready yet: there are still a bunch of basic features and bugs still to be ironed out. As it stands, PB feels like a nicer version of Thunderbird with a few fun features, but nothing much more. For instance, the address book still sucks.. some basic innovation has yet to happen.

So, do I want to invest in Postbox at this stage? Probably not. Do I want to invest in the PROMISE of Postbox? Perhaps, but then I don't know what future I'm trying to support by the purchase. Perhaps the developers can release a roadmap, so I can evaluate whether this is a product that holds hope? Then I might even buy the lifetime upgrades pack...

@arvind updates, (e.g. 1.1, 1.2, etc.) are included with a Postbox 1.0 purchase. We will charge for upgrades (e.g. 2.0, 3.0, etc.), but if you buy the lifetime, you'll get access to all of them. I'll be sure to update the FAQ to address any uncertainty there.

We do not make our roadmaps public beyond what is evident in GS posts or within the betas themselves. This is a pretty standard practice in the industry, and we hope you understand. But know that we have a lot of exciting things planned for the future, and we can't wait to bring them to light.
    • Well I'm not complaining about the price. I also think paying for an app is necessary and I'm willing to, but not for nearly 40$ (ok now 30) for an email client.

    Some people missed my point.

I have no issue with paying for quality software that fills a need that other software does not.

Problem is, postbox doesn't fill that need for me.

    1) Tags don't sync automatically across imap servers. you have to enter the tags on each computer you use.

    2) No apple script support on Mac, so you can't use it properly with other system tools (iCal, etc ...)

    3) Conversation view is lacking, and not smart enough to the point of frustration. Needs tools to be able to merge and separate threads more easily.

    4) Searching leaves a lot to be desired ... attaching saved searches to an account, even though they can search across accounts, is a usability nightmare to the point that they were useless for me. They need their own panel.

I can go on and on.

The ideas behind postbox are great. But they are putting ideas in, then adding more features or refining features that are less important for a working email client.

Here is my previous list, from a long time ago, of things that i consider essential before a 1.0 can be released. These are things that would "polish" so that it feels like a "real" email client as well as bring it up to par with what people expect in a real email client.

    http://getsatisfaction.com/postbox/to...

I had really high hopes for post box. I would GLADLY pay $50 for post box, as well as another $50 at every major x.0 release. A good, high quality, email client is hard to come by. Thunderbird and Mail.App and Outlook are not good or high quality. But they are "polished" ... if Postbox got all the bugs worked out and everything gets refined they COULD have that. Right now, they just aren't there.

I also can't understand why people are complaining. When I first came across PostBox I couldn't believe it was Free - what is the business model?

I hope moving forward that there will be a free trial option because try before you buy is so important.

I've purchased a copy (family pack) because I have moved my family over to Postbox because it is simple and intuitive to use. the IMAP works and allows my wife and I to have full access to our email in the office or on the road with our iPhone's.

The search works as you expect it to and for the first time I can search my mail sucesfully and find what I ma looking for. On my PC I used to have to use Google Desktop to fine email conversations.

Overall for a, not yet, 1.0 product Postbox is excellent if we want Postbox to grow we need to pay up - at the moment for less that $70 you can have lifetime updates for you and your family which is excellent (OK I might have preferred all that for $50 but times are tough and I'll chip in an extra $20 for development :) ).

All I can say to people griping is "grow up" if you want good software and you want it to develop be happy to pay a little to the good folk writing it so they can develop it further and make it an excellent product.

    Good luck guys!

I like PB and am I'm fine to pay, generally, for a good piece of software. Considering the advantage over against Thunderbird 3 I would pay 10-15 USD for it.

But 30 USD are definitely too much for me for a very similar email client compared to TB or Apple Mail. That's why I deleted PB and installed Thunderbird 3. I'm fine with that choice.

I hope that, in the future, the developers of PB would consider their prices and make some adjustments. I think there are many PB beta users who would pay for it but not for a 1.0 version and not 30 USD. Why not start at a lower level and increase your prices with the increasing maturity of PB?

Postbox has the development pace that Thunderbird lost ages ago, the interface has been thought about and the interaction directly with the Postbox guys here is very useful.

In my opinion, you're paying these guys for the integrated experience that Mozilla leaves completely to add-on creators.

I've got Postbox 1.0b14 running on Windows handling my mail, contacts & calendars and it does so with ease and with a style that Thunderbird simply doesn't have.
    • Overall I agree with your comments - though I'm not sure the integration with contacts and calendars yet works to the level I would like especially on the Mac. But overall as a work in progress it is great and it has been developing fast which is fantastic lets hope the development cycle continues to move forward at the same excellent speed.

I have to say, I've never actually paid for an email client I use at home. Either I was able to get a license from work (Eudora, Outlook) or I've used free clients (Eudora, Mail, Thunderbird). I recently switched to Postbox from Thunderbird for two reasons; 1) Postbox's search is exceptionally fast, 2) the UI is much more visually pleasing.

I'd be willing to use an ad supported version of Postbox, but I'd have to think long and hard about paying $30 - $40 for a single license. I know you guys need to make money, but I don't believe home users will pay for something they can get free from others. Businesses will, as long as that license fee brings with it support.

I hope the Postbox team introduces a free version along side the paid. Otherwise, I'll either stay at the latest beta version, or move back to Thunderbird.

    Fellas..

There is other ways for you to profit off of your email client, using us as a trial & error beta run ain't cool... so keep it free, get sponsors to sponsor your app or figure out a way not to have people pay for the app that way your distributional reach is larger, wider and better!
    • I used the trial and tested. I reported errors.
I wonder how many were invited here to test the betas. I know that I wasn't invited. It's not a closed beta testing system.
I personally benefit from its use and would have done no testing without this immediate benefit unless there was a prior agreement to have a free license once out of beta.
I detect some intellectual dishonesty in this repeated claim of users testing and being unreasonably asked to pay. I have no problem whatsoever paying.

Finally, to be frank, I'm hoping that they will listen to those willing to pay under the circumstances.

It's not all that will find value in the efforts made to enhance PB to what it is now in relation to ThunderBird. IMO, those who don't find it worth it can move on as is done with all other products which aren't free.

Vincent, your poll is pointless. It's easy to say "wouldn't pay more than" but you don't know what any of these guys costs are.

I would imagine that the current 'discount' sale means anyone who's buying will pick up a copy "at cost". I would guess that going forward postbox are looking for a 33% margin as they know that people like yourself are going to ditch and the user numbers will drop so they need to make good margin on whatever sales they get.

Paid product can never compete on a level playing field with free product. So if free is what you want you should just go use a free client (thunderbird)

All the moaning on here actually boils down to is that people want the better experience (postbox) but are too cheap to pay for it!

PS: How many of you don't get paid in order to earn a living?
    • Yes, I expect to be paid in order to earn a living.

However, if you make a product that needs to be priced 50$ and the public wont pay more than 10 you have failed.

What the poll is trying to show is whether postbox planning was correct. Selling postbox for 40 $ (without lifetime licence) if most wont pay more than 10 isnt viable.

Its the creators' right to charge whatever they think is right according to their efforts and costs. And it is the buyers' right to choose the value of this product according to their needs and the competition.

All the poll is trying to show is whether the price was right according to the buyers.
    • I agree with the Robbie that the poll is pointless. It's not about how much you would pay, Even it was 10$ you wouldn't pay. Windows costs more than 200$, is it worth it? Who decides the price of it? Not you, nor me, MS price it just like the people in Postbox does.

Does someone who had already paid to the Postbox will join to the poll? So the poll is misleading, it's votes of people who can't or won't pay the current price to Postbox and thinks that it's overpriced. Someone who already paid it will not even care for it. So your poll won't reveal anything as only the non-payers will join it.

I'm not even sure why I still want to follow this post or intend to write replies.

Postbox helped me a lot by unifying my two imap accounts, my hotmail accout, my gmail account, my facebook account, my twitter account. In the mean time I hope it will unify my google reader account and my wordpress blog. I didn't find any mail apps including Apple Mail which can't even manage the subscriptions for imap accounts and crashes because it can't handle my junk folder which I don't even want to get!

I paid Postbox and bought a lifetime license. I don't know if it will stay innovative till the end. I helps me a lot now. With it's search which actually works and by unifying my emails. So I paid for it.

      It meaningless to say that:
"We are beta testers, I don't pay for software which I beta test": It's ridiculous, I have been in lots of betas and later paid for the products, meaning of open beta is not that the product will be free. It's way for you to test the product and see if it's worth to go on with it, shape it the way you want by indicating which features are important for you and other things.
"what 30$, it's too much!", It's still pointless as you probably pay 5$ for an Iphone app or 13$ monthly for your wow account.
"there are other ways to profit": Check this post and you will notice that company had already said it was looking for a business model. Unless you really have a great idea, which does not come to you with a second of thought, it's pointless to say because company was thinking about it for nearly 5 months.

You are just whining because you know that Postbox helps you and you don't want to migrate back to Thunderbird (or whatever) because you know how lame it will be after Postbox.

I don't intend to offend anyone. As I leave in Turkey, the current price of the Postbox with lifetime license is nearly a full week's lunch money for me (yes $ is pretty overpriced in Turkey, so 1$ is nearly 2 Turkish Lira). So I really understand how "cheap" it is. So please don't say to me that it's too much to pay 50$ for a product which will save you hundreds of moments without frustration.

Still, I don't want to offend anyone. I just wanted to make a comment from someone who had already bought Postbox and really happy with the decision he made.

Yeah, as much as I love like Postbox, I can't really say it's earned the price tag being put on it. There's no way I'd buy it and not include the lifetime upgrades option, so for me the cost is between USD$50 and USD$60.

There's not enough additional functionality to justify a price that high. I love the gui, and the search function is unmatched, IME. But It's not worth $50 for it, when I can use Thunderbird (which is obviously adequate, given that I was using it for years before), or when faced with the fact that I can use the beta14 version indefinitely.

To Postbox Employees: you've really been let down by your sales department here. Why should I pay for the baseline version (1.0) when I can continue using the beta version for free? You haven't told me anything about what will be in the baseline version, so you're essentially asking me to plop down cash for promises of something better to come.

I'm putting out a challenge. Want me to buy Postbox (I'd love to want to...)? Sell it to me. You've got two competitors:

Thunderbird 3 : It might not be out there yet, but I can see what it promises in the beta versions which are available for me to use. I can use the betas for free, and I know that when TB3.0 exits beta, it will be free for me to use.

Your own Beta14 product: Let's face it. It's what I'm currently using, and it meets my current needs just fine. I still have the installer file, and it's backed up in multiple places. What's going to be in PostBox.1.0 that's not already in PostBox.b14? So far, I've heard nothing about what's coming, other than bug fixes -- and none of the bugs I've encountered have been severe enough for me to stop using PostBox.

I want to be convinced. But you've got to do the heavy lifting. Why should I buy Postbox 1.0 instead of using the free alternatives listed above? Ideally, you'd convince me here, on an open forum. If not, that's okay. I'm choosing to share my email address with PostBox so they can contact me directly, should they choose to do so.

I see that the general view is that although PB's additions and features are pretty neat, useful and cool, the added value doesn't justify the 60 $ for a lifetime license. And lets not forget that there are still quite a lot of bugs.
(has anyone found out how to add secondary emails from the contacts panel btw, and wthy the hell does the "load more" button exist? I just want to see all my attachments!)

At the moment most of us can use at least 3 other alternatives (free or bundled with almost de facto program suites) already on our computers,

So, wouldn't it be better if 500 bought PB for 10$ rather than 100 for 30$?

after reading through all these posts I'm starting to think that this discussion has become a little pointless itself.
Postbox inc. has set the price. Although I'm still undecided (because of the pricing) I'll buy it because nevertheless it's so much better than Mail.app/TB/Entourage.
    • I have to say, I agree with firebrain. My original commentary regarding the pricing had more to do with what I believe most people will do when it comes to paying for a standalone email client than the fact that Postbox is charging for their client (though, for personal use I'd be happy and jump at the chance to pay if the license were say $19.99 or less).

And, I'll leave with this: unless Thunderbird 3 offers the fundamentals of what I need in a personal use email client (tagging, fast fast search, smart folders for tags like PB) then I will seriously consider paying for a family pack and lifetime upgrades. Pay once and never worry about paying again for upgrades.

indifferent I’m ...."meh" about the whole thing.
While I'm kinda dissapointed in this not being free, I guess it makes sense. There is overhead and salaries to be paid. And while other internet companies offer free stuff (Google, Mozilla, AOL, etc.), these companies have revenue streams from other sources. I don't think the same can be said of those at Postbox.

However, that being said, $29? And that's the discount price??? Nah, make it more like $19 which is discounted from $29, THEN I'd be more apt to pay for it. Oh, and upgrades have to be free forever, once I pay for version 1.0

Hey, Getright and Easy CD-DA do it, why can't Postbox!?!?!

I am using the beta version (which is now for sale). And it still has several annoying bugs (for instance, the "Click to Download Message" that appears in the header doesn't work quite a number of times (and I can't get the message!!!), as well as others.

US$29.00? No way. If I do one day pay that much for an e-mail client, then I'd rather pay US$35.00 for The Bat! (www.ritlabs.com), one of the best e-mail clients I have ever seen.

Thunderbird 3.something is on it's way. And don't forget Eudora and it's Penelope.
    • Every piece of software has bugs. For my purposes Bat! is not enough - it works only in Windows and it also doesn't contain usenet news client. And me and other who already paid and registered Postbox thinks that price is not too high. For long time user of combination of mail and usenet client I think Postbox is now best. I do hope that eventually free Thunderbird will rise again but at this time for my point of view Postbox is most suitable for me.

I just paid for my Postbox + familypack + lifetime upgrades. I am a long time user of Mozilla-based email/usenet-application and know potential of Thunderbird. I used latest development release of Thunderbird before I found Postbox.
With Postbox I got same feeling than years ago when I discover Opera - then there was free (with ads) version and registered version with no ads. There was and is completely free versions available but I decided to support Opera and still Opera is my main browser. (But I still want separate mail/usenet program and not using Opera for that ;-)
One reason to dare to spent my money to Postbox is actually the fact that it is based on Thunderbird - I can trust basic architecture of Postbox and I also remember Scott's activity in Thunderbird.
I am sure that someday Thundebird will give a good competition to Postbox but at this time I like Postbox far more.
    • I have the feeling that the Mozilla organization isn't giving any significant support to Thunderbird development.
Just because it doesn't fit in Google's business model to bring back users on desktop application without ads, and Google is it's main source of revenue.
If Scoot did so much at Mozilla and decided to spin off, I guess there is a reason...
This is why SeaMonkey and Thunderbird are just dead projects with no future.

Like everyone I use E-mail constantly.

PostBox speeds up my work with my multiple AOL screen names. PostBox is easy to use. It has already increased my work efficiency enough to make my purchase today of a license and the lifetime upgrade option a good business deal for me.

    Thanks.

    Fellas... its simple mathematics!

Keep a high volume of users, turn around and sell that to sponsors and advertisers which guarantees you consistent monthly revenue! It also won't hurt to have a web based email where you can place ads as google does to lure in advertisers.

Keep it free and you're growth potential will see an increase - charge for the app and you'll have fewer users, more importantly Postbox' life cycle is insignificant and insufficient in comparison to other mail clients in the market and average volume - therefore the idea of charging will backfire as a low % of users will actually pay for it. I am one of that %

ex: Let's say Postbox has been downloaded 1,000,000 and out of that million there is a 50% user activity; take 0.1% to a max of 1% of that volume would pay.

    5,000 x $30 = $150,000
    50,000 x $30 = $1,500,000

My honest opinion is; that's a poor business call from your CFO :(

None the less - best of luck fellas :)

happy I’m old, admittedly well-paid, and happy.
I won't presume to second-guess your CFO, or to make pronouncements about business models. But I do believe there is a market for a good product with top-rate support and ongoing development (this is part of the issue here, isn't it? how do you ensure ongoing development?).

I said it when the price was announced and I'll say it again: I would have regarded $50 a fair price. I've bought email clients for more than that and for less than that. As they stopped meeting my needs, I moved on. At no point have I felt that my previous purchases, which I now no longer use, was a wasted investment. It was the cost of keeping me productive.

My problem with Thunderbird is that it doesn't have the features of Postbox. And it was quite shaky when I tried it.

I'll be watching Postbox and see if it meets the quality bar that Thunderbird failed here.

You can't satisfy everybody and each has to look to their own needs and budgets.
I think that Postbox did a fantastic job so far and bought myself a lifetime license and I am convinced that Postbox will only get better in the future.

I have to admit that I didn't want to buy PB since the price seemed to high. After checking out the beta version of TB3 (my only real alternative) and struggling with missing features that PB provides, I finally bought a lifetime licence of PB.

I'm still missing some features in this good piece of software. But being able to work my my different IMAP accounts, bringing order in there and finding stuff easily was worth the price.

And I want to invest money in this company because I appreciate the personal service through this forum and their invested time and effort to improve PB.

    Keep up, guys!

Not sure this has been answered yet, but if someone (myself) was interested in buying a student copy and the life-time upgrade...how would you go about that, and is it possible?

Being as I live in a 3rd world country where the currency isn't that strong, do you have pricing options for other places? Particularly expats living & studying in China?

For me, currently Postbox is a nice app with some very interesting gimmicks and I see it going in the right direction.

However, if Postbox does not solve the issues I currently have with Thunderbird (on Mac):

    * Only read-access to the Mac address book
    * No integration with the system calendar
    * Proper spotlight integration
    * Preferably fix how emails are stored (-> backup via Time Machine, monolithic email storage is a thing of the past unless some database is used)

Once these basic things are fixed (or even clearly stated in the road map) I am not going to get too excited about some of the fancy and really nice features it currently offers.

This would create a "full Outlook replacement" for the Mac but better.

(integrating with system calender and address book also means that I can sync the stuff with iPhone, so no, Sunbird or Lightning are not really an option)

    sad I’m disappointed.
I have no problem with paying for an application that works well for me. However, $40 seems to be a much higher price point than I think is appropriate.

I like Postbox, and the added search functionality is fantastic. But the differences between it and TB are not enough to justify 30-40 dollars for a single license with no upgrades, and adding another 25 dollars on top of that for upgrades that may or may not even come seems fairly exorbitant.

Guys of Postbox team: You may earn much more money if u put a little price, like $10, Because NOW, postbox doesn't cost $50, $40 or $30. Else postbox can't be rival for TB3. Now i'm migrating to TB3 too. Thanx. Gerry

Dear Sir, when I install Post Box from ZD it say very clear that this programs was free. Why wen I upgrade the program is no't free any more?

    • Download IS free - and sad to say but that is common phrase when you're searching free software. And ZDnet says also: "License: Free to try"
No one is forcing you to use Postbox - I am satisfied user and use it in my PC and also my Mac (earlier in OS X Tiger and now after upgrade OS X Snow Leopard)

I'm uninstalling postbox, and switching to something else, maybe back to TheBat. It's not such expensive as Postbox, and it is at least fair - i was hoping that if i use some FREE beta 0.x, it will remain FREE, if i dont upgrade to 1.x!

"Please know that an awful lot of consideration went into our roadmap [...] our most important deciding factor was direct feedback from Postbox users. [...] it became very clear to us that the highest demand was for a full version of Postbox vs. a version with less functionality or advertisements."

Lies, why are you hide behind a ghost feedback from users? If it was true, you could release two versions, one of them with advertisement.
It would have to be interesting to see the real behaviour of users by their choice between paid version and with-advertsing-version.

At least you should be grateful to Mozilla and to us sent bugs report to you when the client was free.
