Posterous could be the TwitPic for Laconica based systems with very little work!
I'm a user of the Microblogging Platform called Laconica, which is a distributed, run-nearly-anywhere, open source, microblogging system. It has a twitter-like API, so your back-end code for posting to twitter could be reused, with very little work.
If you use http://twitter.com/statuses/update.xml, the equivalent for Laconica is http://laconica_platform/api/statuses.... Laconica API calls require the base URL (for example, the reference implementation of Laconica is http://identi.ca), the username (e.g. jontheniceguy) and password.
I'd be really glad to help out or beta test this!

YEY! :) -
Inappropriate? How soon? BTW, Laconica is now StatusNet and has enough funding that it is going to continue to be a major player long term, so it would be great if Posterous would support it!
I’m hopeful

I've started a spec for this, for something that Evan has been calling Flickr lite.
its a API for 3rd party media sites to integrate both ways with a StatusNet server.
more to come soon
