Filtering the Best items in the Expanded view
When filtering for the 'Best' posts in the expanded view I often end up with a blank items list, despite their being many posts in the list (these are filtered correctly if I switch to list view), is this a bug or am I missing something?

Inappropriate?Just to confirm, in list view you see stories when you switch to 'best' view, but under in expanded view, they're not showing up?
Are there any specific feeds for which scenario is occurring? -
Inappropriate?Yes that is correct. You can sometimes see it filtering out the first posts and then the items pane goes blank.
This is occurring on all feeds and folders in expanded view.
My guess is that if there are no 'best' posts in the next 20 records it cannot call up any additional posts and so displays nothing. If this is the case is there a way that the extension could mark items as read as they are filtered out, rather than begin marked as you scroll? -
Inappropriate?Ah, I think we know the problem - will keep you posted.
We could start marking the hidden stories as unread, but in the past, we've had a 50/50 split in our user base on what behavior is expected when a story is hidden - half still want to see it, rest want it gone. Hence, this is still something we're exploring. Appreciate the feedback and ideas though!
I’m thankful

Inappropriate?I can see how this is a potentially problematic piece of functionality, but could it not be set as a user preference?
For me it would make a big difference to the app's functionality as I don't want to have to switch to list view just to use the 'Best' filter when I use expanded view the rest of the time. I find that I am relying on the filter more and more, and often I just want to be able to flick through the best posts (e.g. if I have been away for a bit and have a backlog).
Thanks for the response. -
Inappropriate?Yup, I think a user specified option is a good alternative - it'll keep both camps happy. But first, we'll see if we can address the bug you're experiencing!
-
Inappropriate?Does the problem persist if you put the script back into the default "opacify" mode? (Hit 'x' in Google Reader to turn it back on).
-
Inappropriate?Ok, I didn't know about that setting (Cmd-x on Mac). No, the problem does not persist if 'opacify' mode is activated, but obviously you are then faced with a lot of scrolling to do if there's a large number of posts.
-
Inappropriate?Yep, this is a tricky one, primarily because the Google Reader team has not exposed any official APIs that would allow us to invoke the methods we're looking for. Instead, it's an obfuscated mess.
At the moment, the best way around this seems to be enable the opacify mode. We'll continue looking for a better solution though!
