I'm completely lost in PostRank. You need non-video tutorials and more prominent links to them.

So I hadn't visited AideRSS in a few weeks (although I subscribe to a few feeds through it) and today I visit and find it redirecting me to PostRank.com. According to the blog (which I only found by clicking FAQ at the bottom of the page), it looks like the new interface just launched today, coincidentally.

Well, I was completely lost. I enter a feed (lifehacker.com - a very popular site) and I get a screen showing me a bunch of posts, all with different ratings. Gone are the "good, great, best" links so I can subscribe to the "good, great, or best" feeds respectively. If I enter a feed the site hasn't seen before, now I'm told "it's been entered to be processed ASAP" instead of doing it immediately like it did before. I could not find any of the old functionality. I finally figured some of it out after watching the videos - you definitely need a NON-VIDEO tutorial up on how to use the new site (I hate videos, can't always listen to them depending on where I am) but I'm still confused - if I change from "good" to "best," for example, do I have to re-subscribe to the feed in my feed reader (Google Reader)?

Now that I've figured out how to add a new feed to My Feeds, I'm lost again. I set it to "best" and clicked the name of the feed - I'd like to preview it before I subscribe like I could on the old site. All I get is a bunch of grayed-out posts ranked 1.0. I keep clicking "show more posts" and get up to 2.0 eventually. Then, I get a 7.0 mixed in with the 2s, so they're apparently not ordered by rank, but by date posted. After clicking through about 5 screens, I finally get a couple of non-grayed-out posts rated 10. I don't want to see the (grayed-out) posts I'll miss out on - I want to preview the feed as I'll be subscribing to it. I can't figure out how to do that at all.

As far as mousing over the ratings, I'd like an option to shut that off - I don't care how many times the post has been bookmarked in Delicious, for example.

    Hi Kat,

Well, we certainly didn't set out to develop a frustrating user experience. My apologies for that. Fortunately, user feedback so we can make things better is exactly what we want, so thanks for all the input.

For the time being, will try to shed a bit of light on the issues you raised.

Yup, the new interface DID just launch yesterday. (As a result you may find a few quirks that we're still fixing.)

The Good/Great/Best filtering functionality is still there. It's in a drop-down now with the "Show" label. Selecting any of those filtering levels will automatically change the posts displayed to reflect your selected filtering level. Any posts in the overall list that fall below your selected filtering level will be collapsed and greyed out.

For new feeds that are being added to the system, that process still works the same as before. We start analyzing the feed as soon as you submit it, however, depending on the feed sometimes it takes a while to complete the analysis, so people probably don't want to sit and wait, staring at the screen. We changed the message to reflect that the analysis may not be done right away. There was definitely some discussion whether or not what we came up with communicated things the best way, so there's certainly potential for that to be tweaked.

I totally agree on adding more explanations (and I am not a big video fan, either, even though I made them). Will be working on that in the near future. Given our limited time available, we decided to go with short videos to explain things, but page-based tutorials are on our list. If you're interested, would love your feedback once we have those in place. It's hard for us to get our heads into a newer user's perspective sometimes since we're so used to looking at the functionality.

Regarding changing filtering levels, you can change those (e.g. Good to Best) in Google Reader if you have our extension installed. The drop-down for that is in the top right corner. If you imported a feed you filtered on our website to Google Reader, and later wanted to change the filtering level, yes, you would need to change the filtering level on the website and re-import the feed to Google Reader because the difference in filtering makes it a different feed. The old site worked that way as well.

If you add a new feed you your feeds, then select the Best filtering level, if you see a lot of greyed out posts it just means that all of those greyed out posts rank below the Best filtering level. To see more posts you'd have to lower the filtering level. Posts have always been listed by date posted -- same as they appear on the original websites.

The ability to sort by PostRank is a request we've had before, and something we'd like to do as well. At present there are technical limitations preventing it. However, as we develop our system in the future, that functionality will become possible. Just don't have a hard date yet as to when that will be possible.

I'm not entirely sure what you mean about wanting to preview a feed as you'll be subscribing to it. The only difference between what you'd see on the website with a filtered feed and what you'd see in your feed reader is that posts greyed out on the website won't appear at all in your feed reader. Did you want posts that fall below your selected filtering level not to appear at all on the website?

As for mousing over the metrics ratings, we built the function like that for people who wanted the option of toggling viewing the metrics or not. The mouseover option was the best solution to that. Really, if you don't want to see the metrics, just don't hover the cursor over the PostRanks. There is no other functionality that would make it necessary to use the mouse on the PostRank icons.

    Hope that helps!

"Did you want posts that fall below your selected filtering level not to appear at all on the website?" Exactly - when I preview the feed, just don't show the grayed-out posts, or put an option in the preferences so that they won't display. My point on that one was, I want to take a look at what kind of posts I'll be getting in my feed reader, and I don't want to have to scroll through 5 pages of grayed-out posts just to get to the first 2 posts that would show in the feed, which is what I had to do.

It's great that you were able to develop a new Firefox extension, but I already have a ton of extensions and I'm reluctant to add more. At this point I'm afraid that adding more might slow down my browser. In considering new extensions to add, I tend not to go for site-specific ones, especially since I only use AideRSS for 2 or 3 feeds. I wonder if you could make a Greasemonkey script with similar functionality? And then there are all those IE users out there...

Like I said in my post, I did start to figure things out a little once I watched those videos. I'm worried, though, that there are people coming to your site who aren't as persistent as I am, seeing the new interface, feeling lost like I did, and just leaving your service. I'm very glad you're here on Satisfaction - I have found this site to be incredible for getting great customer service, and I do appreciate your prompt reply. Thanks. :)
