"Groups" features suggestion
I definetly think that there should be a MySpace style groups system on Pownce.
I think it should be easy to use, for example you could have a group called "Digg Fans", which you would access at www.pownce.com/g/DiggFans. Groups could be publicly joinable, or the appointed group admins could select who got to join. When posting a note, file or link, you can choose to send it to the group.

Inappropriate? Thanks for the suggestion! One thing we're concerned about with groups is that (because they're opt-in) that you don't know who will receive your note unless you're really careful. All of the other send-to options make it awfully clear who will receive a note. This one would splinter that a bit. Maybe I'm worrying too much. It's definitely an idea to think about. Cheers!
I’m appreciating the feedback

Inappropriate?I also had the idea of public groups. Interesting application scenario: A public group for a concert --> you can communicate with other concert-visitors. (also works for locations like museums etc...)
Check out my blog-entry about this topic:

Inappropriate?I actually think that Livejournal communities would be a better analog for this feature than MySpace groups. On LJ, communities have a profile page that shows all the members, so when you choose to post something as friendslocked to the community (rather than public), you can easily refer to list and know exactly who is encompassed in the group. That answers dburka's concern to some degree.
Better yet, groups would save users from duplicating the work of creating sets; certain sets of people are obvious enough that every member of the group will want to create that set. For example, what if I got my coworkers Alice, Bob, Chris, and Dave to join Pownce. I've already created a set called "Dept." It's kind of silly that Alice would have to create a set containing Bob, Chris, Dave, and me, Emily; Bob would have to create a set with Alice, Chris, Dave, and Emily, etc. We all want the same set, so they should be able to "join" the set I've already made. Basically, you'd have a set that someone *joins* actively rather than is added to passively by another user.
I’m overthinking this, as usual

Inappropriate?A lot of time passed since last reply, but problem with sets remain - each one of my 3 friends had to create identical sets so we could stay in touch. We're working on a new website project, and we have chosen Pownce for coordinating this project but without groups it's difficult a little ;). And when our website will be online, we would definitely use Pownce group for it.
People could apply for group membership, and group moderator could decide which applications can be accepted. And I would definitely pay some bucks to make sure group main page will have cool layout similar to all other sites of our :).
On Group Page we could see all group members, most active members, simple "about" note, announcements and events etc. -
Inappropriate?I agree! A client of mine runs a training course business and is requiring a 'social' service through which his trainees (past and present) can share thoughts, ideas, discussions and files.
Pownce was right up there on my list of contenders until I realised that there was no centralised way for group/set members to be managed. From what I can tell, each individual must add each other individual to their own personal set.
Allowing centrally managed groups would certainly be a great way expand Pownce and bring on board a whole lotta new users.
But then, maybe it's outside Pownce's charter... perhaps my required type of interaction is best done by something like Google Groups?
