How do I remove fans?
Is there any way to remove fans? If I can unfriend, I should be able to remove fans too.

Ah, that makes a lot of sense. So if you don't want "fans" reading your notes, don't make them public, right? If you're willing to post your notes publicly, you probably shouldn't be worried about fans.

There's no way to remove a fan and this is intentional. Anybody (fan or not) can easily follow your public notes. All that being a fan does it allow that person to get a notice in Pownce that you've made a public note. I think that it would be misleading to allow you to remove fans -- it implies that the person you've banned from being a fan can no longer read your notes. That's obviously not the case... they could still easily track your public notes by visiting your public profile, using an RSS feed, etc. Your public notes really are public. Does that make sense?
I’m concerned about this issue.

Inappropriate? What about if there was someone you didn't want to appear on your Fans list? Say they had requested to be a Friend (for some reason unbeknownst to you) but you happened to not like them. In fact, you don't like them very much at all. And you certainly don't want them to appear anywhere near your Pownce page, even in your Fans list. Is there anything you could do in this [purely hypothetical] situation?
I’m undecided

Inappropriate? That's a good point Madii .... are fans similar to followers in Twitter? I can certainly block unwanted and offensive followers in Twitter ....
I’m wondering ....

Inappropriate? This is a good point. If we can make the distinction clear enough, we might allow you to remove someone from that list. I'm just really concerned that you'll think that the other person can no longer follow you just because they're not on the list. Clear messaging might help. Thanks.

Inappropriate? Now, what can you do if you're in the opposite situation? You used to be a fan of someone but are not anymore. Is there a way to stop being a fan?

Inappropriate? This is a good question, Melanie, and worthy of it's own topic post. Care to re-post it as a new topic? If you'd prefer not to bother, I'm happy to do it for you.

Inappropriate?I will re-post it as a new topic right away then. :)

Inappropriate?I'm all for being able to remove fans. I had some guy requesting me who's a fan of almost 15,000 people. I think there should be some way to control who can hang around on your pownce-site. It feels like some guy who's lurking in front of my doorstep. If he wants to read my feed, let him bookmark it. And where's the spam-button you guys mention in the FAQ?
-
Inappropriate?Dave, the "Spam" button is visible when you're going through your friend requests. This user who was requesting 15,000 people has had his account suspended due to people reporting him as a spammer. We should have caught it earlier, but we're still figuring some of this stuff out. Cheers.

Inappropriate?Does this person happen to be a 'gentleman from India'? He requested me as a friend two days after I signed up and I didn't see any way to get rid of him, so I befriended him in order to kick him out again. When I un-friended him, he stayed there as a fan. This guy has - wait a sec - 3216 'friends' and is a fan of 14,273. Pretty popular, eh?
He's not in my request list anymore, so is there any other way to get rid of him? Or mark him?

Inappropriate?dburka, I understand that it's impossible to block someone from reading your public posts at all (which is why private posts are so damned useful) but I don't think the fan concept is going to survive the spam factor as-is, which is exactly what's happening here. The feeling is that even if you reject people, they gain visibility through you -- and to an extent an association with you -- by existing as a link off your profile. Basically, that user is still there and visible by others and still feels like spam.
That you had to explain this isn't the case is exactly the problem: those who don't understand how fans work may assume the wrong thing. It also encourages spamming because it looks like an easy way for exploiters to get publicity by being on lots of people's fan lists.
I would go so far as to say this is exactly why a user's list of followers on Twitter is *only* viewable by that user and not by any other reader. It's also the reason why Twitter later added the Block feature. -
Inappropriate?I also do not get the problem with Fans. I cannot see how this would contribute to spamming because your fans can only reply to public posts which they could even if they were not fans.
And honestly how many people look at other people's fan list. There is much easier ways to be made public than being on a Pownce fan list.
I think that the best bet is to have a way to identify spammers on your replies and having an option to hide your fans in the privacy section of the settings.
I’m happy

Inappropriate?["I cannot see how this would contribute to spamming..."]
I think you are looking at it from a single-user's point of view. I'm looking at how it effects the entire Pownce system -- think "PageRank."
BTW: I totally agree, this method of spamming (or fame-whoring, to be more accurate) would not benefit greatly by doing this. But amateurs who don't know any better will do it anyway because of the possibility that it will help them, and it's easy -- that's the exact nature of spam and the key to combating spam activity is to disrupt the mechanisms to do so.
Someone who has their name on tens of thousands of user's fan pages is definitely going to get better traffic than if they hadn't. -
Inappropriate?I agree that if you are posting to the public anyone should be able to see it but I think people should also have the ability as to what is listed on their page.
I’m frustrated
