Inappropriate? As it stands, I believe a simple disclaimer on the Users About Me should be sufficient. If people want to check, then they can look. The FAQ should also be updated to indicate this.
However, I would love to see what others think! -
Inappropriate?Hey Jez,
We currently have a page for site policies located here. Admittedly it is pretty barren at the moment - we don't have that much trouble.
To answer your direct questions:
We don't specifically state that entries shouldn't be created by manufacturers - as long as they are objective and not merely copy and pasted marketing material this is fine! Copy and pasted entries are labeled but rarely removed if the product meets a certain level of notoriety (i.e. not some small furniture manufacturer or t-shirt artist etc etc..). Entries of products that aren't really mainstream are generally deleted as spam (see deletion policies detailed below).
Seeding reviews is frowned upon, but not a real issue.I do remember at least one entry where a company caught seeded reviews from 4 independent users. In these cases we generally just call the manufacturer out and don't delete the content (it is however voted down by the community).
Products, comments and links added that are considered spam are deleted under our slightly less ambiguous link, product and comment deletion policies. Some people have pointed out that they aren't the strongest in the world, but having a little bit of leway is a good thing, and nobody has really complained of unfair treatment. Feel free to add to our discussions on these, or read about how you can help.
Hope this answers your questions!

Inappropriate? The reason I ask is that a well known networking cable manufacturer got caught out recently offering $0.65 for posted positive reviews.
ProductWiki is a very clever system, but it will get popular enough sooner or later and that it could get gamed by vendors. Don't think it won't happen.
However, if you had a policy on what should happen if vendors try this, then you could just point them at the link. That's the reason I asked.
In answer to your statement that, "We don't specifically state that entries shouldn't be created by manufacturers - as long as they are objective and not merely copy and pasted marketing material this is fine! "
good luck getting an objective review :) Also, you may find same vendor posting negative reviews on competitors :(
I am just playing devils advocate.. that's all! Don't worry, I know how easy it is to get caught out on the internet.
I’m playing devils advocate!

Inappropriate? This is why we need people like you (critical thinkers), and those who have actually tried the products. We have several products added by manufacturers with comments from multiple individuals claiming it is a scam or just plain bad. Nobody is saying we're trying to get it perfect - but if something is popular we hope the wiki nature of the site will get the truth out there. Even if there is a hint of skepticism created by contributors to our site, it might deter potential customers from making the wrong choices! Sorry I didn't get back to you here sooner, thanks for the concerns!
I’m thankful
