General thoughts on Profilactic user input, feeds and mash-ups.
I love this 'Get Satisfaction', its a really well implemented idea, which I have been pestering Ping.fm on as well.
Anywho, just some casual user ideas if I may.
First thing, when adding a custom feed, it would be neat to be able to also add a custom icon/favicon, so it blends in nicely with the 'official' supported services.
I ask this because I noticed that when I added 43 Things, your 'official version', none of the updates actually come across in the mash-up. If I add it myself as a custom service, using the feed address, then it works fine in the mash-up, just be nice to be able to add your own icons to them. I assume that the service you have set-up when you add it automatically is just not geared to pick up the personal feed address. It did take a me a few minutes to find it myself, but now I have added it as a custom feed, everything works well.
Another thought.
Also, in the services list of active servies, I sometime need to fiddle or amend a custom feed, but the only way to do this is to delete and start again. It would be nice if the links to the services were active and allowed you to make small edits to the information.: title, feed, general info, notes etc.
For me Profilactic is MY main depository for ALL my services, feeds or not. Here I add all my newly subscribed sites, which allows me to keep on track of them all. Some sort of note section, would be really very useful.
RE the first thing with 43. I notice that not all the official services, when you make an update do not includ any updates made directly in the mash-up, even though you seem to support them (Fuzz, Tolou and Wink are a few that seem to be sort of dormant). Just wondered why that was? For 43 it lists all the appropriate sections when you add it Profilactic, but nothing ever gets updated to them.:

(I added FEED)
What I have done is to add a custom feed to the existing 'official service' and name it feed, and that works nicely.
Keep it up!!! Love it.

Inappropriate?Hi Graham,
First, thanks for taking the time to post your thoughts, comments and questions.
We had issues with the feeds coming out of 43 Things in the past. I blogged about some of the problems back in Dec.'07.
http://www.profilactic.com/blog/2007/...
Basically, there were blank items getting inserted into those feeds. And those blank items were showing up at the top of the feed, so everyone who had 43 Things in their mashup got a blank item at the top of their mashup page.
It may be time to revisit the 43 Things feeds to see if that issue has been resolved.
We didn't add an edit function on the site setup page because we wanted to keep things as simple as possible. Plus, for default sites, it is just as simple to delete and add again than it would be to edit it.
However, I see your point for custom stuff. If you've gone to the trouble to find the URL and the RSS feed for a site you want to add, it would be inconvenient to have to delete it and start over in the event of a mistake.
We'll add that to our to-do list and see what we can come up with for editing those custom items.
Tell me more about the notes idea. Would that be something that would show up underneath each of the sites in your Where to Find Me Online list?
As far as dormant feeds, it could be that a site has added or changed their feeds since we added them to our site. I will go back and revisit the services you mentioned to make sure that we're pulling the correct feeds.
Again, thanks for all of your feedback. We appreciate it. -
Inappropriate?OK, I've added 43 Things support back into the site. I'll test to make sure things look right.
I also checked on the other sites:
1. Fuzz -- updated their feed URL and things should be working now
2. Tolou -- RSS feeds are only visible to members; may need to test that further
3. Wink -- don't offer feeds of their content
If you find any other sites that don't seem to be updating, please post them here. -
