Reader profile?
Perhaps when people join just to read you might make it an option to make their profile look different? The color red instead of our green? I'm having a hard time getting friends and family to join and read my stuff because they think that it's too public and that they are rude if they don't post. A lot of people might want to subscribe to a writer's community to read for free!

Inappropriate?I'm not sure it would be a good thing to have two different types of membership. Wouldn't the 'readers' feel a little inferior to the 'writers'? I'm not saying they would 'be' inferior, just that they might feel like 2nd class citizens.
There are plenty of Protagonize members who've never written anything. I don't know, but I suspect they probably outnumber the active ones! I'm sure nobody thinks they're rude. Some people may even join with the sole purpose of reading, and, decide to have a crack at writing something later on down the line, but if they don't it doesn't matter. And, in the end, it's always free to read anything on Protag, whether they sign up or not, but that way, they can't comment on your work.
Maybe they could fill in their profile to say they're there to read, so that they don't get pestered to write something.
I’m wondering
