Inappropriate? The G1 does not support video capturing yet. Once it does, we'll evaluate.
-
Can you explain why video capture ability is necessary for the g1, when it wasn't for the iphone? Neither one has video capture out of the box, yet qik had an app for the 3g iphone within a week after it was released. -
Inappropriate?"yet qik had an app for the 3g iphone within a week after it was released"---------that's because Qik had an app for first Gen iPhone before iPhone 3G release, almost the same for 3G iPhone
-
O.K., that makes sense, but could you be more specific. Bhaskar's original comment/answer implied that the G1 didn't have video capturing and that was the reason there was no Qik app yet. My point is, neither does the iphone out of the box. Does the iphone have a more robust chipset than the G1? Or is it simply an issue of time for the Qik app to be developed for the G1? Or is it something else? -
Inappropriate?Every phone platform is different. Apart from chipset the underlying operating system, processing power, camera spec is different. Also the presence of a camera does not necessarily mean that it has the ability to capture video. We need to evaluate all this prior to making any comment. Once G1 inherently supports video the evaluation becomes easy. Hence, my previous answer.

Inappropriate?OK, but what does "inherently supports" mean? Is there an API missing from Android? Is there hardware missing from the device?
I’m worried nothing will be done.

Inappropriate?I echo Cory here. My G1 clearly has "video" when I go to take a picture. I'm seeing live video on my screen as it auto-focuses.
I'm guessing that there isn't any API support for video yet.. I don't think there have been ANY video capture apps released for Android yet - yet plenty of video playback stuff.
I’m anxious to get Qik on my G1
-
Inappropriate?Well, I just read this from the tmonews.com site. Read it for yourself by clicking on the following link....
http://source.android.com/roadmap/cup...
This will be the next major update for Android on the G1. It's thought to be coming sometime in January 2009. If you notice, one of the upgrades is support for video recording and video sharing (hello Bhaskar at Qik!).I would love to hear any reaction to this news from anyone at Qik, but especially the Qik Jedi Master, Bhaskar. -
Inappropriate?Well spotted tvphil :)
I note that it now says "Update: cupcake has been merged into master." where it used to say "this may not be finished until early January."
Looks like they are ahead of schedule :)
Would love to hear what that difference it makes to having Qik working on G1?
Bhaskar, I'd love to hear your guestimate answer to this question:
Will Qik work on G1 by mid-March 2009?
I ask because that is when I plan to start touring cool ecovillage/ permaculture/ transition projects in the UK and using Qik to share video about them whilst also encouraging them to start video blogging about the world changing stuff they are up to :)
Cheers,
Josef.
I’m hoping qik will work with G1 before mid-March 2009
-
@jdaviescoates that is exciting to hear and we'll be evaluating this once it becomes available for us app developers. Till then it is really not possible for us to give any ETA on this. -
Do you mean Camera app with Video Recording capabilities (from cupcake/master branch)? It uses private API -
Inappropriate? As far as I know, it isn't from the cupcake branch. If it was, it wouldn't be available now. I've used it for a week now and it works good for a first effort, but the ui has a very alpha going on beta look to it. Voice client needs to be downloaded first, to get audio with video. Video is actually a jpeg stream, but the developer plans to switch it to a video codec soon. Sharing via I m is supposedly being added within a week. This is a free app, so Qik shouldn't have any excuses for not experimenting with it.
-
There is a video recording app in the Android Market that so far I've used a few times with no problem on recording video and audio. So, not sure the problems with Qik. -
Inappropriate?I don't think you understood what I was saying. I never said I had a problem using this video recording app. I was simply responding to the previous post from notmaxx, the Qik employee. I just wanted to explain to him that this app was not from the Cupcake branch and that it's a free-open source app that they should be experimenting with to help them develop a Qik app that works on the G1.I am assuming it could help them, I don't know that for a fact. Here's hoping it can help.
-
Inappropriate?"Also the presence of a camera does not necessarily mean that it has the ability to capture video. We need to evaluate all this prior to making any comment."
"The G1 does not support video capturing yet. Once it does, we'll evaluate. "
reversed order.
I’m sad
-
Inappropriate? The iPhone also does not support 'native' video. I don't think that's a good enough excuse! =)
I love Qik!
I’m curious.
-
Inappropriate?Video Recording is NOW NATIVE with the OTA update of Android 1.5 to the G1 and the Android Developer Phone.
Resolution 352x288 H.263 3GP Mono sound @ 8KHz
Frame rate 16-19fps
In my tests, about 20-25 seconds per MB or 46KB/s
Here's a link to someone else who posted a video:

Hopefully they can throw something out to us android peeps now that we have a video recorder. Always wanted to use Qik but never had a supported phone. Be qik about it Qik :) -
Inappropriate?I've got the G1 and I'm not sure how to go about having Qik notify me when the G1 is supported. On the Qik homepage it sounds like they can automatically notify you when a particular phone is supported, but where is it? Or am I reading too much into it and it doesn't actually work like that?
-
Inappropriate?Just register with Qik on their website. When you do, it will tell you they'll notify you when they support the G1. It's based on the phone type you give them in the registration process. They just cross reference it against their list of supported phones. Since the G1 isn't supported yet, that's the message they'll give you after you register. Whenever they do support the G1, I believe they will automatically SMS the app to install in your phone.
-
Inappropriate?I guess I just don't remember specifying what phone I have during registration. If the question was there I must have entered it, so I guess we'll see. I would imagine it would be supported sooner rather than later, judging by all the HTC phones they already support and with the video camera support being rolled out to everyone with a G1. Cross your fingers, and thanks for the reply!
I’m confident
-
Inappropriate?Got my upgrade to Android for my G1 phone and the video works a treat. All I need now is Qik running on it to make if perfect.
-
Inappropriate?Since my Sprint (Samsung) Instinct was never supported for Qik, I'm now thinking to switch to an Android device later this year. No problem or complaint intended regarding the Instinct, as developers must walk a difficult tightrope in prioritizing their resources.
To that end, I'm very hopeful the newest Android v1.5 release features (video recording) will give them everything needed to quickly knock out an Android-based version. The Iphone and Iphone 3G releases were done in an impressively short amount of time.
Thanks in advance!
I’m very hopeful

Inappropriate?Hi Will,
Currently , we have no updates on the G1 phone. You can create an account with us and indicate during the sign up process that you have a G1 phone. We will email you if we have any update on this device. -
Truly disappointing. I'm going to cancel my Qik account now and ask others to do the same. If Qik obviously keeps ignoring the Android community (despite it's proposed growth rates) for months, I'm out. Bye, Qik. -

I’m finished with qik
-
Inappropriate? So can you guys do something about this. The devs could port qik to android in no time, its just why haven't they?
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate?"The G1 does not support video capturing yet. Once it does, we'll evaluate."
Bhaskar in an interview:
Q:Can we expect an Android port any time soon?
A: The challenge with G1 is that it does not inherently support video capturing. We are looking at it to figure out their roadmap around video, and we’ll then see how we can take advantage of the platform.
---
The G1 does, now, inherently, support video capturing.
Have been signed up for Qik for months already.
At first I had a Wing - another unsupported phone, one of the few newer phones with Windows Mobile not officially supported.. I got it working though...
I'd pay for a G1 video streaming app at this point, and I'll wager eventually some shmuck will hack together something like the "Video Recorder" that used to be on before the Google opened up the Camcorder API. The first "app" will probably be sending individual pictures really, really fast, or like old fashioned webcams - hit refresh every 30 seconds..
There are apps that have access to the video stream, namely the bar code reading apps. They've created quite the stir considering they do "pull" bar code reading. Not sure if anything there is of use.
I haven't worked in Java day to day in 8 years. I've done a hello world app, hey I'm that far, lol. Too much of my own work to worry about in other languages. If I do see anything (open source, hints, etc.), I'll post it.
This is just a "cool thing" that could be so much more if it came to fruition.
Already rattling other cages and watching who's the first to figure this out.. Qik is just an obvious fit.
I’m frustrated

Inappropriate?can staff please look at rabid_nerd's reply? and get that G1 release out..
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate?I have a huge G1 forum and we are all patiently waiting for the G1 version to drop. I used to love it for the iphone, and I port wouldn't be too complicated. The UI can port over instantly, while the actual video capture engine and API may need some tweaking.
-
Inappropriate?explain to me why the iphone is supported and it does not "inherently" support video capture??
-
Inappropriate?Anyone up for a conspiracy theory? Google owns Youtube and Youtube has been rumored for over a year, to offer live streaming video from 3g phones in the near future. Perhaps Google/Youtube are blocking out Qik and others, so they can force G1 owners to only use their service? The latest Cupcake update already offers direct sharing of recorded-in-the-phone videos to Youtube within the video recording UI. What do the rest of you think?
-
Honestly it was well thought out... but I doubt it to be true. It's honestly up to the programmer to developer. The G1 has apps to send spam via SMS, and hack Wifi security, a little video app shouldn't be a problem. -
Not likely a conspiracy on Google's part. It'd be stupid to block out developers on an open source platform. Not that this is the place to start conspiracy theories, but I'd look to Qik being in bed with Apple. -
Inappropriate?I think that they are just lagging it. Android is growing really really fast and it would be awesome if we got Qik on Android. There's already a lot of people waiting for this..... and the phone already supports video... so what's the hold up?? Please say that at least you guys have a prototype. That would make a lot of people happy and would be willing to beta test it..
I’m Frustated
-
Inappropriate?i dont think it a conspiracy, so much as they are in bed with apple. simply consider 1 fact: Qik had a application for the iphone although they just recently adopted video recording. Qik isn't even replying to the many comments left on this blog!!! Bhaskar, tell me, exactly what is the hold up??
-
Inappropriate?Just wanted to clear some things up.
1- G1 does in fact now support video starting with the 1.5 (cupcake) release
2- iPhone also officially supports video as of release 3.0
There may be a new player looking at providing the G1 with Qik-like capabilities. It is LiveCliq
Still waiting for either to come across with the video support for G1
I’m just waiting
-
Inappropriate?Staff "here"? Qik is not getsatisfaction. Getsatisfaction is a fraud designed to pull stupid people away from a company's real support network and drag them into their own site. Qik has no real obligation to help anyone here. See
http://www.37signals.com/svn/posts/16...
And for god's sake people, there is no conspiracy to not support the G1 phone. It takes effort and money to add a feature, give them some time to do that. -
the argument isnt who is obligated to help or answer question on this topic.........we post because employees post, thus or complaints are, at the very lease heard. the insults are not necessary. what u felt the need to say is already understood. -
I guess Qik got duped into using getsatisfation for forum style customer support. And we're the idiots? Next time Cory, take the whole Prozac, it works much better than a half pill. -
Inappropriate?Thank you for your continued patience with us while we work towards figuring out how to support G1 and @cory thanks for your support.
The reason for our silence is mainly because we don't have any new update to provide other than what was provided ~2 weeks back. -
Inappropriate?Lets hope it won't take too long to build an android app.
it's quite simple to build for android and the G1 supports 3gp and direct upload to Youtube so keep on trying (or start trying)
I Look forward downloading the G1 Qik Solution

Inappropriate?Very nice, just downloaded and it streamed for a few mins before crashing but happy to finally have an update and a beta or alpha or whatever you consider it.
Problem is I can't relaunch the app. When I do it just takes me to the camcorder with no qik settings.
EDIT:
Support emailed me back, in the camcorder app you need to hit 'back' to exit out, not 'home'. Then you can launch qik.
I’m excited
-
Inappropriate?Yes!!! Android has Qik and its perfection!!! All of us in the android community appreciate it!!!!
I’m thankful
-
Inappropriate?Installed but didn't run - was happy to see the email come across. Nice turn around time. I wasn't going to bash or anything. I just assumed it was a platform/access/specific barrier.
Impressed!

Inappropriate?I'm enjoying Qik. Come watch me as a have meetings in the DefJam office, and meet with my guys at Dipset. Qik employees thank you so much.
-
Inappropriate?Hi,
You can download Qik from your G1 browser at http://qik.com/dl/402.
Alternatively, you can go to "market" from the main menu and type in "Qik" under the "search" function. The download will start and you will be prompted to install the software.
