slowness when adding a task
Okay, 99% of the time, i just want to get in, add a quick voice task, and get out. This is what slows me down in v2.0:
1. I open the app and it takes 5 or so seconds (much longer than v1 it seems)
2. Hit the big plus sign
3. Tap "anywhere" to start
4. tap anywhere to stop
5. WAIT 5 SECONDS FOR AUTOSAVE ahhhh
So this takes me 3 clicks and at least 10 seconds. Sorry to sound like a whiner but the real problem is that it was so much better in v1. I thik it was 2 clicks and <5 seconds.

Inappropriate? Thanks for the feedback, Christopher. I'll pass this on to the team. The launch time should be reduced once the fix we've submitted to Apple is approved so hopefully that will help.
The idea behind the new add by voice interface was to make it easy for people to add when they are in a "no-eyes" situation, and easy for people who want a quick way to continually add by voice. It sounds like we haven't achieved that for you. The new interface was meant to:
- allow you to stay on add by voice. If you don't want to, you never have to select the + sign again. Just add by voice and close your iPhone. When you come back again, it will be on the add by voice screen.
- enable no-eyes recording. With the big button to start recording, the big button to stop recording, and auto-save, you don't have to fumble around looking for the save button while driving.
From initial feedback, the old interface was slower and more prone to error for users because they couldn't find the save button. However, I'll definitely pass your comments on to our design team. -
Inappropriate?wow, thanks for the quick reply. I am a UI programmer so I do appreciate what you were trying to do. Couldn't this all still be achieved by a hybrid of the two methods?
On the front screen you could have 2 plus signs, one on the lop left, one on the top right (for example, though probably not my first choice as far as appearance).
Once it's hit, it begins recording immediately. You could then detect a few seconds of silence (like google does in it's app). You could even do the thing that google does where you put it up to your ear and it begins recording, and stops when you take it away. Or if you need to, i like the tap anywhere in the screen idea. Or allow all three for flexibility.
You could also change the autosave to 2 seconds, or 1 second, or make that time configurable (That would make it a million times better).
With this plan you could bring it back to 6 seconds, reduce it to 0 clicks, and you could even keep the features of "no-eyes recording" and you could even keep the quick-add thing in there instead of going back to the screen. (or you could make that an option in settings). You could also make it an option in settings where it first opens to (last opened screen, new voice task, etc.) I don't generally think user settings are not the way to go though, it should just work seamlessly and efficiently for 90% of your users.
I really rely on your app, so thanks!
Thanks,
Chris
I’m optimistic
-
Inappropriate? Thanks for all the great ideas, Christopher. I'll pass these on to our design and iPhone team.
We do want to provide recording when you bring it up to your ear (the way that google does). Unfortunately that's an undocumented API that we are not allowed to use yet on the iPhone. We're hoping that will change. -
Inappropriate?You're welcome, thanks for replying.
Pleeeeeeeze put some kind of fix in there as soon as possible so i dont have to dread adding tasks, it makes me a lot less likely to use it.
Thanks,
Chris
I’m patiently waiting
-
Inappropriate? This very morning I was just thinking about how nice it would be to have the fast loading old version back. The main drag for me is the 5 second autosave. It's not a long amount of time, but I usually use reQall on the go and I hate having to wait everytime I add a task.
I also understand the reason for the UI change, but I'm with Scott for hybrid design. All I need is an unobtrusive out of the way "Save" button. Doesn't matter where you put it or how big because once I've used it a few times I'll know it. Then I can add a voice task and hit the Save button right after without waiting.
By the way, I love a lot of the great pro features. If the iPhone app can speed up its launch and I can save voice tasks faster I'm definitely going to be paying for this! -
Unfortunately no - Apple doesn't let us make multiple versions of the same application easily available. We're working hard to address your concerns in an upcoming version of the app - bear with us, and thanks for all of the feedback! -
Inappropriate?Unless we use the full 30 seconds to record we must always tap to stop recording then wait for the auto save
How about the following;
Tap with one finger to bring up the options with a 5 second countdown to auto save (this would suit newbies)
Tap with two fingers to immediately save
We could even customise 1, 2 and 3 finger taps for different needs -
Inappropriate?Hmm. 2/3 finger taps means you can't do it with one hand, but i like the idea that i could customize it. You could make it whatever want by default but if i could customize it then i would have no problem. So, if you could get rid of that 5 second countdown that would be great. Maybe the two finger tap could be used to discard it or to bring up the options. also when i'm done adding a task i'd like to go back to the list to view my tasks. i often only want to add one task
-
Inappropriate?Customisation is the key
For me the default 1 finger tap would be set to immediately save
two fingers is almost as convenient, 3 less so, but 2 fingers could bring up the 'for' (with a discard option) menu when I want to share and 3 fingers could be for some third option (share with multiple people?)
I’m excited

Inappropriate? The iPhone can detect when you hold it against your ear (you see the screen go blank while talking on the phone). So it should be possible to hit the + button to add something, then start the recording when the phone is being hold to the ear, and stop and save when you move it away again from your head.
I've been using some other notetaking program which did this and that worked very nicely. -
Inappropriate?I thought they added this feature to the app? I just went in now and it didn't work. but in the settings it has an option for "eyes-free recording."
reqall - any comment?
btw the way this should work is if you put it up to your ear it immediately begins recording a message. -
Hi Christopher, OK I will have a go with it to see if it is working. -
Inappropriate?I turned off eyes free recording since I almost always ended up with accidental recordings while waiting for the last message to sync.
I’m indifferent
-
Inappropriate?Hi all, it seems that there are a few questions here so I would like to try and address them all. Please let me know if I miss one or create more.
We do now offer eyes-free recording. To utilize this feature please check your Settings and verify that you have your eyes-free enabled. If you have your Settings enabled and still are unable to get eyes-free to work for you can you try switching your Settings to Off and then back to On. We have had some users report that their initial setting was received. Switching it to Off and then back to On have seemed to fix this.
To record something with eyes-free, tap on the reQall icon to launch the app and then with a quick movement move your iPhone to your ear, once your phone vibrates begin recording. When you are finished with your recording move the phone away from your ear and the iPhone will vibrate indicating that the recording was successful and you should soon see a screen that says, "Successful Recording."
There is more on eyes-free recording as well as some helpful tips and screen shots at http://www.reqall.com/about/reqall_ip...
Hope this helps!
I’m confident
-
Inappropriate?I know i've seen this work in the past, but right now it's not working. when i put it up to my ear the screen gets dark but no recording and no vibrate. I've tried turning off the setting, running the app, turning it back on, and running the app to no avail.
-
Inappropriate?Hi Christopher, can I verify that you have a Pro account? The eyes-free function is a Pro exclusive feature. If you are indeed a Pro user and still having difficulties can you send an email to support@reqall.com and mention this post so that we can look into this for you?
Thanks! -
Inappropriate?Just emailed support also since it is not working for me also. Have tried turning it off and later back on but that didn't help. Will post an update to this thread when I know more.
-
Inappropriate?NO, i don't have a pro account. I thought this feature used to work, did you take it away? This is another time i've regretted upgrading the app then.
You should fix the normal process then if you're not going to give out the up-to-the-ear feature.
I’m very dissapointed
-
Inappropriate?Christopher, I apologize about any and all confusion. We had a bug that allowed some reQall Standard users to access eyes-free recording. We have since then fixed the bug, making eyes-free a Pro exclusive feature. You can see all Pro features on http://www.reqall.com/about/compare_p... Can you tell me about the normal process that is not functioning for you?
Willemjan, I just did a quick scan over support and was not able to find your ticket so I'm assuming another member of our team got to it. Please let me know if you do not receive a response and I will do a more in depth search. -
Hi Jessi, I received a message from Aparna that the technical team is working on it. But haven't any other reply during the last 3 days. Hopefully the problem can be solved before the pro trial runs out. -
Inappropriate?thats not the kind of bug we like to be fixed.
if you read from the beginning of this post, my annoyance with having to tap the screen so many times to add a task is well documented.
I’m wondering why that feature is in pro
-
Inappropriate? As a Pro User I am wondering what reason a UI Programmer could have to stay with the free version?
I use reQall daily and happily pay for the service they offer.
Perhaps you would be happy if they gave all the pro features for free and asked for donations?
I wonder how long it would be before they follow sandy?
I’m Mind Boggled
-
Inappropriate?haha, touché.... also as a UI Programmer i would know its a bad thing to take away a feature from ur user. But anyway, at least give me back what i had in 2.0!
-
Inappropriate? This is the biggest, most discouraging problem with Reqall. You open it and tap the plus sign and nothing happens because, I think, it is syncing at the same time. You have to hit the plus sign several times to get to the recording page. This started for me as soon as those floating sentences giving examples of the language to use were added. At this point, if I'm in a hurry, I jot the task down on a piece of paper. Can you fix it?
I’m frustrated
-
My slowness problems seemed to be related to the number of items in reqall. I "fixed" the problem by creating a new account. Without batch delete this seemed like the only workaround. -
Inappropriate? Thanks for the feedback. I'm sorry for the inconvenience. This is something that we are aware of and that we are working to fix. For the time being you can change the sync interval to a longer period of time or even to manual, this should help a little. However, this is not a 100% solution.
