I was wondering FF3 using ca. 40-50% of CPU (that means a whole core!) the whole time in the last days. I searched for the origin of this phenomenon and now I found it:
As long as I have rescuetime.com in one of my tabs (doesn't matter if this tab is active or even if I use FF3 at the moment or having it run in the background) the CPU usage is that high! As soon as I close the tab the usage by FF3 rapidly goes down to 5-10% when using it and ca. 2% when using another program and having FF3 running in the background.
So how can it be, that only having rescuetime in a tab causes such a high CPU usage? I mean I don't even use it. I can have google opened in 50 tabs and it does not use any CPU usage. Why does rescuetime.com?
There is a problem with using local files in the browser. I use the FF3-AddOn UpdateTracker which saves whole sites on the hard disc (to check for changes) and uses a local path for that when displaying the data in FF3. But Rescuetime has a problem with that and assigns this time to another site (maybe the last one used before). Now I have up to 40 minutes of a site I just visited for 2 minutes or so. I saw what's the problem by looking what the debug window says. Everytime I clicked on a tab with a local path it logged the other URL.
I have the following problem:
I used a site (a homepage; between 9pm and 11pm) which says for today (24m 57s) total. But when I click on it to reach the "App / Site Details" the graph (18m 54s) shows for 9pm and (24m 53s) for 10 pm. So the total would be (43m 47s). But I think 24m 57s must be the right time and because I used that site while the hour changed (and without a break), the 10pm graph seems to show the total time, not only how long it was used within this hour. Could that be?
I also have a screen of that where you can see the two bars (one up to 18.75, one up to 25) and on the same screen the total of 24m 57s.
supplement:
This also leads to depended tags showing the wrong overall time:
I tagged the site as "video" and "fun" and now "video time" is (1h 10m), but I used the three depending apps/sites for only (24m 57s) + (16m 57s) + (10m 12s) = (52m 6s), so there also is a difference.
And "fun" (1h 16m), but the 8 depending sites/apps only add up to (49m Xs).
The "Today" at my dashboard and also the calendar still show Monday although it is Tuesday in Germany. So this does not orientate on the location date but maybe on server date.
This leads to a total time of 5h 25m total and 4h 50m today (although there are 0:35 minutes transfered for Tuesday until now).
At the "Time Spent" chart at "This Week" it is right. This one shows the right times for Monday and Tuesday. But not on the "Today" charts.
I'm just using RescueTime for 2,5 hours and it worked well but since half and hour or so, it seems that it does not not add further URLs or programs. I have 43 entries now, but it does not add further ones? Of course I tried to update manually, the time counter goes up, but no new entries appear in the list.
I just signed up yesterday and installed RescueTime on my MacBook Pro. It was late in the day, and it completed 1 update before I shut down. This morning I installed the data collector in my XP VMWare Fusion install as well. I now get Timed Out errors in both OSes.
It worked on the Mac side yesterday, but doesn't work on either OS this morning. Is there a server issue? Or is it my computer?
It occurred to me that all of the "dead time" between when you last do something and when the 2-minute idle timer kicks in could be removed simply by not logging the time between the last keyboard/mouse/window event and the expiration of the idle timer. i.e. keep track of the timestamp for the last event, then when you get to the idle timout, you use that previous timestamp when logging rather than the current time.
Also, 2 minutes seems like a long time... I hardly ever go more than 30 seconds without at least fidgiting with the mouse, even when reading a document. Perhaps that timer could be settable on the preferences/logging/timer settings tab.
I use RescueTime on my notebook - both at home and work. In corporate network I have to use proxy, of course at home not.
RescueTime data collector should automatically detect lack of proxy or at least try to send updates using proxy and directly (without proxy), if proxy was not found. That would save me a switching proxy on and off when I'm at work / home.
See my previous post "Need better way to delete erroneous tags and favorite tags"
Can you allow users to download a spreadsheet/csv file with three columns.
App/website (or however you are recording it at finest level of detail)
Tag (or tags)
Classification (only to make it easier for me to chose my own tags)
Note: if its simpler a separate record for each tag when an app is multiply tagged is fine.
Allow me to manipulate this off-line NOT to change App/website or classification but just to retag the apps using (say) Excel to drag tag's to multiple apps etc.
Probably a separate column where 1 means add and 2 means delete the tagging of an app
I have my apps tagged as:
AppA:tagA, tagB - AppB:tagC - appC-tagA
eg you send me:
appA tagA classA
appA tagB classA
appB tagC classA
appC tagA classB
I send back:
appA tagA classA X
appA tagK classA
appB tagC classA X
appC tagL classB
result after you update is:
AppA:tagB,tagK - AppB:<no> - appC-tagA,tagL
ie. don't touch app-tag combos I don't send back and make requested additions/deletions.
You mentioned in a separate post that XML could "somehow" be acquired by users. If that's a lot easier for you then I could probably generate a syntactically correct XML file to cover above but IMO using CSV would be a lot easier for most
Currently when a computer is locked, rescuetime stops logging (as expected).. But when coming back from unlocking the computer, rescuetime doesn't resume logging; it requires specifically re-enabling logging from the user.. Is there a setting to automatically re-enable the system, or is the manual method the only way??
hi
is there a way to use rescue time in 2 differente computers with the same email but with diferent information, in case 2 people using the computer at the same time?
Rescuetime tracked my time usage for a few days, and now says it has no data for me. I use firefox and have AVG spyware and Windows Defender active. I tagged many sites and that is also now lost.
i use a number of web apps (basecamp, assembla, sharepoint) to manage my projects. it is not enough to summarize that i spent 2 hours on Assembla, because I was working on 3 different projects during that time. There should be a way to specify RegEx against the URL. This will allow me to tag "www.mywebapp.com/ProjectA/..." separately from ".../ProjectB"
I've been using RescueTime for two weeks now and am really enjoying it. I have two feature requests that I believe would double the value for anybody who uses MS Outlook.
1) Intergration to Outlook to record scheduled meetings (appointments of type Meeting or Recurring Meeting).
2) More granular recording of Outlook time (I spend about 30% of my time in Outlook it would be really valuable to understand what is spent on Tasks vs Mail etc).
