data collector not responding on osx

The rescuetime process on my mac is not responding. The Dashboard reports that it has not been updated for 1 day. 30 minutes ago it said no report for 23 hours. So it probably stopped reporting at around 1300 GMT 16 July 2009.

Until about 30 minutes ago, the process was providing me with a menu from the icon in the taskbar. It had not updated the server for 23 hours, however. I tried to "quit" from the menu, and the process no longer responds.

Help! I'd like to not lose 24 hours of activity. I will probably kill the process shortly and restart, but I don't know if it will lose info.

    I terminated the data collector process on the mac and rebooted. I am now unable to restart the collector. It runs for a few seconds, with the icon in the menu bar, and then the icon disappears and the process is gone.

    I should also mention that these problems have been happening since I have been at a site where I my computer has been assigned a new hostname by DHCP. I seem to have no control over this -- the mac updates the hostname every time it renews its DHCP lease, and the network connection routinely goes up and down, so this happens frequently.

    Yikes. :(

    We keep seeing these problems pop up occasionally but we're having a really hard time tracking down the cause, since we can't make it happen here.

    It would be really great if you could help us narrow this down some more by downloading a test version and letting us know if it has the same problem. You can get it here:

    It doesn't log any time, it just will help us know where the problem is if it crashes or not.

    Thanks for the response!

    I have started up the application that you sent, and it does not crash on startup. I don't know whether I should leave it running or not. I am going to exit it and try the original app.

    The original app continues to crash. My guess is that when I killed it the first time, after it hadn't updated the website for 24 hours, it left some data on my machine in a corrupt state. Now, when the original application starts up, it tries to read that corrupt data and crashes.

    Please let me know if you need any further info. I'm now "down" for 48 hours (bad scores for this week :-(

    Here is some more information about the environment here where the original problem occurred.

    I am on a mac. I am at a site that runs its own multi-access-point wireless network. It has a web-based initial login that sets up a DNS entry for my machine that is good for a week. Whenever I connect to an access point, my machine gets a DHCP lease for that fixed address as well as the name associated with that address. That name is different from what I have named my machine. The command "hostname" now returns this new name. This is behavior that I haven't seen on any other wireless network.

    One other difference with this network is that one of the access points will connect to machines, but does not have connectivity to the internet. It is in an auditorium and it is intended to encourage attention during talks.

    I hypothesize that the mac may be cycling as follows:

    1) connects to disabled access point (highest signal)
    2) notices that it can't go anywhere
    3) connects to another access point nearby that works
    4) notices that there is an access point with higher signal
    5) goes back to step 1

    If this is happening, it could really stress networking code that does not check and recover from all potential errors.

    This may suggest a way to replicate the problem at your site, perhaps on a machine with 2 network connections that are randomly enabled and disabled while rescuetime is running and updating. The hostname issue may be a symptom of network connection changes which could be the underlying cause of the problem. Everything from "I hypothesize" is hypothetical. The information before that is as objectively descriptive as I could make it.

    I've done some more experimentation and at least narrowed down the problem. My hope is the latest version should fix this issue.
