How can I view window_title data from the dashboard?
I noticed that in the log files there is an attribute for both app_name (i.e. Photoshop) as well as window_title (i.e. TopSecretClient_HomePageComp_01.psd)
Is there any way to see reports in the dashboard on the window title attribute? Right now it seems to only expose the app_name.
I may work on several different client projects all within Photoshop throughout the day. If I'm smart about my file naming I could then track my time across projects VERY efficiently using RescueTime!
It would be similar to how you break up Firefox usage to show website data.
This sort of thing would be very important to us and would help me sell the idea to the CEO to pay for the Pro version! ;) ca-ching! $$

We have plans to incorporate the window title information into the data that is displayed, however that is likely a few releases out.
Suggestions and feedback like this help us prioritize new features - so we appreciate your feedback!

Bump - 12 months later! ;) -
This almost answers the question, but without researching your average release rate, it's unfortunately not very meaningful in terms of time.
Given that most people know that such things take longer than hoped/expected, might you be willing to estimate an ETA and we can at least get some sense of what you're aiming for? That would be really encouraging. :) -

Inappropriate?Although this is a fantastic product, being able to split apps out by window title would make it much more useful for me.
I work out of VMware boxes and need to split up my time depending on the box I'm working with.
Thanks!
I’m happy

Inappropriate?Another example... I use Excel for work-related spreadsheets, but I also use it for my personal checkbook register, keeping track of tv shows recorded/watched etc. Not to mention the master Black Friday shopping deals spreadsheet! (Obviously these would be considered personal, and not work).

Inappropriate?I just wanted to add that the window title data should be considered as a MUST have due to the way in which we all work. We most likely are "expert" in a few programs and therefore tend to do all our work in that program. Example Outlook and Word. If I spend two hours mailing friends then this simply shows as Outlook (and Word if that is my email editor), this doesn't really help me to see what I am doing. Only what tool I am using. BIG difference.
I use remote desktop application for approx 50% of my work (sometimes more) and it is essential that this is recorded with the window title rather than the name of the app.
In actual fact it would be really cool if you could enable or disable this feature on an application by application basis. Default is only to record the App name (as now), but you could say for any particular App, make the window title the primary information.
Would work a treat for me! :-)
I’m excited if this does happen

Inappropriate?Another thought on this one, it would be even more useful to have some sort of pattern matching for titles. i.e. Any window title including the word "projectA" is assigned to tag project-one.
mmmm that would be even more useful for me...

Inappropriate?I would like to join in on these requests. I use MS Terminal Services Client (remote desktop) on many of my customers and therefore just telling me that I have used this program does not really tell me anything. I know that most of my day is spent on other servers from remote desktop, but I do not know wich ones. Adding the window title can be done easily if you do it in delphi:
ForegroundWnd :=GetForegroundWindow;
windows.GetWindowText(ForegroundWnd, capt, 79);
the caption will be in the capt variable. But i guess you knew this already. So to summen up: Please add the window title... -
Inappropriate?Same for me , rescuetime would only be useful for me if window title is used instead of application name ...
-
Inappropriate? This kind of "granularity" would obviously extend the usefulness of RescueTime tremendously. The possibility of being able to assign tags based solely on the app being used, OR attributes like text patterns in the name of the data file the app is working with at the time, OR the window title of an application would be fantastic. We're asking the world from these guys, but hey, they may be able to deliver -- go, guys, go.....
-
Inappropriate?Same request for me. I do not understand the point in Rescue Time to upload all window title information (in plain English: "file names"), if this information is made un-available in the dashboard, just sitting on Rescue Time's servers.
But for privacy issues, it is definitely better that all the tagging of files and folders is done locally on the machine by the Rescue Time Data Collector.
Instead of uploading
app_name: Photoshop
window_title: 'TopSecretClient_HomePageComp_01.psd'
then to upload
app_name: Photoshop
window_title: 'Work' (< - tags defined locally on the machine)
That would also reduce the amount of data uploaded to Rescue Time's servers, therefore reducing its costs (or allowing for more users for the same amount of servers). -
Inappropriate?ppgs, I have to disagree with you.
Disk space is cheap. Bandwidth is relatively cheap. If the users want a feature, and RescueTime has the technical ability to deliver that feature, then nothing else should get in the way of adding that feature.
It would probably be more expensive in the long term to build (and maintain) a client side UI (both Mac & PC) to do tagging locally, than it would be to just store all the data on the servers and have 1 unified UI to add tags from. -
Inappropriate?I would like this feature too. Among other things, it would allow me do distinguish among Visual Studio solutions I work on.
-
Inappropriate?Yes please! I have to track my time by project for work, and I usually have several projects open in Textmate, as well as different Navicat windows for different databases.
I’m desperate
-
Inappropriate?Bump. Really need to be able to tag based on window title as well as application. I use putty to connect to local servers for work and remote servers for non-work.
As a clarification to this, it would be useful to be able to specifiy a regex for the title as often the title will be changed during a single session (e.g. for unix shell current directory). -
Inappropriate?Yes, I really wanted to find this app useful, but I use my computer for both work and personal tasks. In particular, general productivity apps like Office (Word, Outlook). Further data on the URL would also be useful for tagging sites like Wikipedia. But mainly I have hours logged in Word and Outlook and no way to tell what I was doing. This makes my data pretty much useless. I look forward to returning (even *paying*) when I can accurately tag my usage. Thanks.
I’m disappointed.

Inappropriate?+1 for the window title feature... plus if we could pattern the window title I could convince my company to scrap our crappy time tracking app and sign on with RescueTime.
I’m salivating at the thought... or the cupcake
-
Inappropriate?I really don't understand why this is still not in, as it was mentioned in some other thread to be one of the "top requested features" months ago. I am still having RT installed (though not actively using it because its not that useful for me without this feature) because none of the competitors have come up with this feature yet, or lack appropriate statistics for it (like JournalLive), but as soon as someone implements this (for-me-)killer-feature, I will abandon RT and switch over.
Considering that the data (Window title) is already collected anyway, wouldn't it be quite simple to have an option that uses the Window Title instead of the application name? That would be a crude solution (and in the end it should be possible to have custom grouping, e.g. using Wildcards for window titles, and selective use of application name or window title), but way better than no solution at all at moment. -
Inappropriate?I'm afraid RescueTime is pretty useless to me unless the windows titles are recorded and tagging can be done on them. I look forward to this feature being added.....
-
Inappropriate?I switched over to RescueTime because the lack of having to manually record when I was working on things sounded great. In reality, without this feature (filtering by window name), it has meant although I have RescueTime installed, it's useless and I don't use it at all.
I know RescueTime is free and what they've done is awesome, but I'm going to start looking for another tool that can do the job. Perhaps it was my unrealistic expectations but from the comments I expected this feature added within weeks - and now it's been a year.
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate?I agree with people here. Having MS WORD show up without the document title doesn't help. Great concept, but without this, it only works truly as intended when we're using browsers.
I’m frustrated
