RescueTime crashes Firefox 3
I installed Firefox 3 recently the day it was released. It was very stable. I tried RescueTime for the first time a few days after that. I noticed that FF3 started to crash randomly all the time. It even crashed while running in safe mode. Not able to figure out what was causing this, I suspected RescueTime and turned it off. I noticed that FF3 works fine when RT is turned off. This could be a bug with RecueTime. Please have a look at this bug, since it means that I won't try RT until it's fixed.
I'm running FF3 and RescueTime on WinXP (with all recent Service Packs installed). I've noticed this crashing behaviour on both my work PC and laptop, both of which are running the same mix of software.

Inappropriate?I'm looking into this problem now. When you get crashes are there any additional Firefox crash messages or logs that are being generated?
There were certainly some changes done in Firefox 3 that required me to tweak the code for retrieving URL information, so I'm going back over that code to see if there was something new introduced that is suspect.
Thank you! -
Inappropriate? When you see the Firefox crash - does the Mozilla CrashReport start? If so, I'd love to see some of the crash logs that should be created. On Windows XP they are located at:
C:\Documents and Settings\[username]\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Crash Reports
Feel free to send any crash reports that you feel are related to RescueTime to team@rescuetime.com
Thank you -
Inappropriate?Great information Ashwin - I'm working on some fixes right now and should have something in the next day or so.
As soon as I have a version that I think resolves this issue I will post an update here, I'd love to get a couple of people who are having this problem help us test it out.
Thank you -
Inappropriate?Joe, thanks for looking into it. I want to use RescueTime, so you have one tester for the fix right here :-)
I’m thankful
-
Inappropriate?Willing to test the issue out

Inappropriate?I've had this problem as well, all the way back to three months ago with the first Firefox 3 beta I tried. Unfortunately, I lived with ~20 crashes a day until only last week I discovered this was the problem!
My crashes, besides occurring completely randomly, also crash in random ways. Sometimes I get a Mozilla crash reporting screen, sometimes I don't. Sometimes it's listed in the event log, sometimes it isn't. -
I don't know whether is is related but I got a similar problem the day before yesterday. And I think Adobe AIR (+ thwirl) was the problem. Maybe that's in someway connect. [Just because I also got: "My crashes, besides occurring completely randomly, also crash in random ways. Sometimes I get a Mozilla crash reporting screen, sometimes I don't."] If it's something different, just forget about my posting.
I had crashes in Safe Mode. And sometimes it took 3minutes of surfing to get a crash sometimes just 20 seconds. -
Inappropriate?Ok, I've published a beta build that I believe will resolve the crashes some people are seeing in Firefox 3 (at least those related to RescueTime).
You can find the installer here:
http://dev.rescuetime.com/updates_bet...
This should update/install RescueTime 1.0.6.04 which includes changes to ignore invisible attributed fields in Firefox 3.
Please let me know how testing goes!
Thank you -
Inappropriate?Hi Joe, I've installed the beta. I will post back here if I see any further FF3 crash with it. If you don't see any message here in 2-3 days, then I guess it's good :-)
I’m amused
-
Inappropriate?I'm running 1.0.6.04 now, commenting from within FF3. Will report back if I have any crashes.
-
Inappropriate?Joe, FF3 crashed 5 times within 10 minutes of running the beta RT in the background. I'm sorry but looks like the problem is still there. I will have to turn off RT since it makes FF3 almost unusable.
I've uploaded the latest crash reports to the Mozilla website, but it takes a day or two for them to generate the report. I will post back the crash report URL once they're done. But, I'm guessing it shouldn't be too different from my earlier report.
It is very easy to reproduce the crash. It seems to happen "mostly" when I switch from or open or close a tab.
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate?Argh - well that wasn't what I wanted to hear, but I appreciate you getting back to me quickly. I've got a couple of other tweaks that I will get coded in tomorrow morning and get another release pushed out.
Ashwin, I know you mentioned that you were able to reproduce this while in "safe mode", but perhaps you could list out add-ons you had installed while you were doing your testing today? I'd like to try and reproduce your environment as closely as possible to try and get these crashes happening on one of our testing systems.
Also, if there is anything in particular about your setup that you think might be worth mentioning - which could help me get our test systems to exhibit the same failures.
Thanks all for your continued assistance in trying to track this one down - we'll figure it out! -
Inappropriate?Hi Joe,
The addons I use are:
Adblock Plus
Better GReader
CustomizeGoogle
Delicious Bookmarks
FireGestures
Flashblock
Foxmarks Bookmarks Synchronizer
IE Tab
IAC I still believe that FF3 will crash even in safe mode easily. That was what made me suspect RT in the first place ;-)
I can't think of anything else that's unique about my setup. Do let me know if you need any other information.
-
Inappropriate?Ashwin, in 1.0.6.04 I added some debug statements to RescueTime that should log for some specific errors in the Debug tab in the RescueTime preferences.
When FF3 crashes on you, do you by chance see errors listed in the RescueTime Debug tab? -
Inappropriate?Joe, I ran RT again and FF3 crashed within a few minutes. This is what I see in the RT debug tab:
2008-07-03 09:20:28
Error 2410: Error HRESULT E_FAIL has been returned from a call to a COM component.
2008-07-03 09:20:28

(And lots more lines of this same debug message.)
BTW the debug tab doesn't seem to allow right-click copy. -
Inappropriate?I have exactly the same behaviour, but have never had RescueTime installed so it may not be the culprit. I do suspect Adobe Air or something related to it, however: I have uninstalled it and am trying that out for a while.
-
Inappropriate?Sandy, it could be another app which is probing Firefox in the same way that RT does. Close down all the apps that probe FF3 for any kind of information and then see if it still crashes.
-
Inappropriate? Thanks for the reply. I realize that this is OT for this thread, but how do I identify everything that probes FF3?
I noticed some correlation with Gtalk activity, so I've disabled (but not uninstalled) that as well. Soon I'll be back to DOS. :( -
Inappropriate?Sam, can't really say which. Just have a look at all the apps you have running when FF3 crashes.
-
Inappropriate?Just a quick update to the status of this issue. We've had reports from a number of users that the beta build does resolve the issue for them, but we have also got a system that can reproduce the crashes when a specific javascript file is run.
We are trying some things with the system that we can reproduce the crash on - and I hope to have a new build for testers to look at soon.
Thanks! -
Inappropriate?Another update on today's progress.
We have identified a specific call to Firefox 3 that will periodically cause crashes (AccessibleObjectFromWindow). Another user has a set of JavaScript test files that seem to trigger something in Firefox that will cause any calls to AccessibleObjectFromWindow to crash Firefox 3.
I have written a small program that all it does is repeatedly call AccessibleObjectFromWindow to Firefox's window handle and will cause Firefox 3 to crash when this users JavaScript tests are run. Most other browsing and switching back and forth from websites do not seem to cause the problem.
Once we have a bit more information we will be filing another bug report with Mozilla with more specific information on how to duplicate the crash scenario.
If you have any other situations that seem to cause Firefox 3 to crash while RescueTime is running - going to a specific site for instance, please post that information here.
Thanks! -
Inappropriate?Same problem here...trying the beta now.

Inappropriate?Hi, just wondering, do I need to uninstall the earlier version before running the beta set - up?
-
Inappropriate? You can install the beta over top of your existing install, it will automatically perform an upgrade in place.
Please note however, we have been a
