Switching to Safari is often very slow with RescueTime
Since installing RescueTime, it seems that almost anytime I switch from one app to Safari, that I get the rainbow spinning pizza cursor, and it takes a bit for Safari to activate. It is a long enough delay that it's very frustrating. I'm wondering if others have seen this, or if this is a known issue, and/or if there is a solution, etc.? I make heavy use of Safari, so cannot continue to use RescueTime if it can't be resolved. So, hoping someone else has seen this issue and has a suggestion.

Inappropriate? Is it every time? If so, can you try quitting RescueTime and seeing if the problem resolves? In other words, are you SURE it's RescueTime?
We haven't heard any reports of that and we're also all Safari users here...
I’m undecided
-
Inappropriate?I'm running with RescueTime off today, and haven't had this problem occur once. I'll turn it back on later and see if the problem comes back.
-
Inappropriate?Unfortunately, it appears to be RescueTime, at least as far as I can tell. I ran with it off for all of Friday, and experienced no problems. I then turned it back on, and now I'm seeing the problem again.

Inappropriate? How bizarre! We're a Mac shop here and all use Safari quite a bit. Never experienced that (nor have I heard of other Mac peeps experiencing that). Are you running the most recent version of Safari? I'm going to shoot this thread to our lead Mac client developer to see if he has any ideas...
I’m not a fan of technology sometimes

Inappropriate?Oh, and just to triple check-- can you give me your version # of Safari and what version of OS X you are running? We haven't been able to reproduce this, but would like to try getting as close to your setup as possible.

Inappropriate?Hi - I've run a few experiments on my MacBook Pro and I couldn't get consistent results. Could you email me at brian@rescuetime.com with your system specs and which version of Safari you're using? Thanks
-
Inappropriate?Brian, I sent this to you in email, but thought I'd post it here for reference as well:
Thanks for looking into this. I'm seeing this on a Mac Pro, some specs/info:
MacOS X 10.5.7
Mac Pro 2.66GHz Quad Core Xeon (Nehalem chip)
8GB RAM
Disk setup as a striped RAID set using software RAID
I use two Safari's. My main browser use, for just everyday browsing is regular Safari, version 4.0.2 (5530.19). For my daily development work, I use Safari nightlies, and I think I notice it more with the nightly builds (but it may be that I'm simply switching to that browser more often). Current nightly is 4.0.2 (5530.19 r46282).
I am most often switching from TextMate to Safari, but of course other apps too. I'll try to note down any apps I'm switching from, and also keep track of which Safari it was in each case. -
Inappropriate?Just updating. I've run with RescueTime on and off since my last response. I am convinced it is involved in this problem - anytime it's off I have no issue, anytime it's on I have problems. It of course may be an interaction with one or more of the many other things I run on my system.
But, one thing that is a guess on my part is that it has something to do with RT's getting of the URL/web page you're looking at so it can put that in the time alotments. I say that because what I noticed is that this can happen even if I'm already using Safari, but just switch tabs - so no application task switch involved, simply switch to another tab. This is a lot more rare, but I've seen it a few times now, and it's again coincident with RT being active.
Anyway, I've had to turn off RT now, as it's not a workable situation for me, but if possible, when a new version comes out, or you have a [debug] version you want me to try or any such, and you can add a note to this topic, that'd be great. Thanks. -
HEy Chris-- Thanks for the update. It's pretty maddening-- we're all Mac/Safari users here and cannot reproduce this on any of our machines (which means that it's awfully hard to fix). We've got a few more things to try and will update this thread if we learn anything. Bargh! -
Inappropriate?Totally understand. I'm a software developer, and have experienced this kind of thing numerous times, so know how maddening it truly can be. Good luck, thanks for trying, and I'll keep an eye out for new versions, etc.
