What about supporting Linux?
Our early marketing/PR efforts showed about 6-7% of our visitors were Linux users. Additionally, we think Linux users are more likely to be avid stats-hackers (and thus dig RescueTime). So we REALLY want to support Linux.
Nonetheless, there are only so many hours in the day and we are a team of 3 self-funded guys.
Our sincere hope is that some enterprising young linux geek out there will reach out to us with an interest in building a data collector. Our data collectors talk to a REST web service, so it wouldn't be an overwhelming task for a sharp coder, and we'd be glad to offer a lot of support.
For more info, feel free to contact us. We've got a plea for help up on our API/Developer page:
http://www.rescuetime.com/developers/
The more people who like this idea, the more it gets noticed.
The best point from everyone

Hey everyone. I've got a basic uploader written in Python that I've been using for the past few weeks. I haven't ever gotten around to testing it on different systems (I'm using Ubuntu 7.10), but it's available at https://launchpad.net/rescuetime-linu... for anyone who's interested in trying it out.
I've been meaning to post it here, but I wanted to wait until I at least tried it on KDE/etc. I've never managed to get around to it though, so I guess I'll go ahead and post it here. Anyways, please try it out and submit any problems you have.
I’m sad for no reason.

Inappropriate?Hi, I'm glad that you guys want to develop a Linux version. I'll be patiently waiting for it =)
Ok, maybe not that patiently, but I'll try.
I’m happy

Inappropriate?I really hope this happens. I use my windows and linux machine side by side joined using Synergy as a network KVM. I hope this happens soon.

Inappropriate?Thank you for the post Angus, I've pointed a couple of people towards the linux version. I've been swamped since I got down to Mountain View so I haven't had much time to play with it yet.
-
Inappropriate?Angus, I'm interested in helping with your port to Linux. Let me know if you're interested in additional hands.

Inappropriate?Yeah, definately. Any help you can offer in terms of coding or testing would be very much appreciated.
I’m Locutus of Borg. Resistance is futile. Your life as it has been is over. From this time forward, you will service... us.

Inappropriate?Nice job Angus. I followed the instructions and it seems to be working fine. I did get hung up on the login dialog - kept entering 'winkler1', not full email. Changing the label to 'email' would be better.
I like the simplicity of the ffox plugin and how the description says just what it does :)
I’m thankful

Inappropriate?Okay, I finally got around to pushing out an update this weekend. Biggest new feature is a gnome panel applet that Lars created for controlling the uploader. We also did some major refactoring on the code base, so let me know of any bugs or other problems you experience.
I’m happy

Inappropriate?Trying this now! Very excited!

Inappropriate?Something seems screwy...I am getting "none" reported even when I'm asleep. Screenshot - http://screencast.com/t/xZuc5babs . The ubuntu box seems like the culprit.
Could there be an optional log file in the preferences to know what it's doing? (log file: ~/rescuetime.txt)
Also it'd be good to more easily know the version #... thx -
Inappropriate?Alright, I'll look into it. I've gotten the "none" application before, but not for several hours at a time. Thanks.
Also, if you could report bugs to the launchpad project instead of here, it would help me manage the bug's lifecycle better and avoid bothering the RescueTime guys.
I’m sad that my code has bugs.

Inappropriate? My brother is a doctor in mathematics and opened the secret and wonderful word of Linux for me. This has been a well kept geek secret, I guess you guys where secretly laughing at the rest of us who have been struggling with Windows badware. I am madly in love with my Linux pc and now I struggle to join the geek community. I've upgraded to gutsy and learned to type sudo! Now I will throw out all windows - and convert the rest of our computers to Linux. I am just ahead of the crowds - because - Rescue Guys team - they will follow shortly! Just look at the new mini-pc with Linux preinstalled. I am so happy that the Linux community are working on this application, and I will love to use it.
Thank you!
I’m Happy for the wonderful Linux people

Inappropriate?I've just about gotten web site whitelists working on the linux uploader, will upload a new branch to launchpad soon for possible merging.
-
Inappropriate? My experimental branch is pushed to launchpad with working support for whitelists on linux with firefox (not yet hooked up to epiphany and konqueror), and has been proposed for merging into the main branch.
Try it out if you like: https://code.edge.launchpad.net/~stat...
I’m unconcerned

Inappropriate?I've tried with SO Kubuntu 7.10 and I find several problems.
1. It doesn't load $http_proxy
2. Every time y run rescuetime_linux_uploader the file preferences is overwrite with the default values.
3. What about a kde control panel?. When I run rescuetime_linux_uploader_gnome_panel_controller:
File "/usr/bin/rescuetime_linux_uploader_gnome_panel_controller", line 8, in <module>
load_entry_point('RescueTimeUploader==80', 'console_scripts', 'rescuetime_linux_uploader_gnome_panel_controller')()
File "build/bdist.linux-i686/egg/RescueTimeUploader/entrypoints.py", line 9, in gnome_panel_controller
File "build/bdist.linux-i686/egg/RescueTimeUploader/gnomepanel.py", line 11, in <module>
ImportError: No module named gnomeapplet
Thanks.</module></module> -
Inappropriate?Hi guile, I think it would be useful to report bugs and feature requests here:
https://launchpad.net/rescuetime-linu....
If you can provide some more details when you report those bugs, I suspect that 1 and 2 are very easy to fix. 3 would be a great contribution, maybe you can write this or find someone who is using KDE to do it. -
Inappropriate?Thanks. I'll do.
-
Inappropriate?Well, I've got some bad news; my new Macbook arrived last week, and after several days with it I've had no urge to install Ubuntu on it. So, I'm going to be abandoning this project. If there is anyone who is interested in taking over, respond here and I'll see about moving the stuff on Launchpad over to you. I'm going to be on vacation and offline for the next few days, but please respond if you are interested.
Thanks a bunch to all the people who contributed code or time, and also to everyone who's found the project useful in some way.
I’m leaving

Inappropriate?Hi Angus,
I run Ubuntu on my Macbook, it works great and I can either boot directly into it or start it inside VMWare Fusion. Anyway, thanks for all the work you put into this! I'd be happy to take over maintaining the project for you, my launchpad profile is https://launchpad.net/~statik/

Inappropriate?I know I could probably install Ubuntu on here, I just feel no need to. I'll probably get the new OS itch in six months and install GNU or something, who knows.
I've changed the project maintainer to you. My latest bzr branch changes over to YAML instead of XML for the uploaded data, which needs to be done soonish. Best of luck to you.
I’m thinking about installing GNU

Inappropriate?Angus, I want to chime in here and say we really appreciate all of the work you've done with creating and maintaining the Linux uploader. It is very encouraging to us to see individuals being passionate enough about this type of thing to go out of their way to get it done.
Elliot, I know you spoke with Tony yesterday - but feel free to ping me with any technical questions. I will try to keep you informed of any major feature or changes that may impact your efforts, and look forward to working with you.
Thanks guys!
I’m thankful for awesome devs
