Windows Data Collector Blues
I am running a PC with WinXP with SP2. After downloading the Windows Data Collector, I ran it and it ran without a hitch - supposedly doing a successful installation.
But when I try to launch the app, I get the error 'RescueTime has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience."
I click 'Close" and another screen pops up - with the message -
"An update of RescueTime is now available. etc etc"
I click "Next" - it says retrieving files...then "The updated applications files have been retrieved"
I check "Restart RescueTime automatically" and click "Finish"
Again get the error: "RescueTime has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience."
Even after I uninstalled the app and re-installed it, I get the same error. Ad infinitum.
I really want it to work. What do I do?

Inappropriate?In the directory that you installed RescueTime to, there should be two executables: RescueTime.exe and RescueTimeStart.exe.
RescueTimeStart.exe is a stub application whose only purpose is to check for and apply updates if they exist. By default, this is the application that attempts to automatically start.
Could I have you try running the RescueTime.exe program directly and let me know if you get the same error message?

I re-installed the app and ran RescueTime.exe directly from the installed folder.
Same error message. Don't know what could be creating a conflict....
BTW, even though I haven't been able to test RescueTime, I'm in love with the idea.... :-)

Inappropriate?Ok, the next thing to try is to remove the settings, to see if something got corrupted there during your initial install.
Since you haven't been able to run the application at all, we can safely remove the entire settings directory and it should be rebuilt when you start RescueTime again.
The directory and included contents you want to remove is:
C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Local Settings\Application Data\RescueTime.com
You may need to Show Hidden Files to see those directories.
After removing the entire RescueTime.com directory, retry running RescueTime.exe from the installation folder.

Inappropriate?Hmmmm....I looked and looked and then looked some more....there is no RescueTime.com directory at C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Local Settings\Application Data\
So the settings directory is not being created at the time of installation...could that be the problem? Should I create a RescueTime.com directory there?

Inappropriate?One of the first things that RescueTime.exe attempts to do when running for the first time is to create the RescueTime.com directory with a default configuration, so it sounds like it's not even getting to that point. Since the configurations files are stored in your local settings, it shouldn't be a security issue at this point.
It is possible that there is an issue in the .net framework libraries installed. When you first installed RescueTime, did the installer also ask you to download and install the .net 2.0 framework? If it didn't, do you have other applications that are using .net 2.0 installed that are working?
We are in the process of reworking a version of RescueTime that is not dependent on .net, but that is probably a month or two out from now. -
Inappropriate?As far as I know, I have .net v1.1 framework installed. Should I install v2.0 and then try re-installing RescueTime?

Inappropriate?I think I might be getting this too, my data collector defiantly keeps crashing although it's not on startup, just at random times, I just get the general windows "application fatal error" screen with the send/don't send options.

When you installed RescueTime, did you also install the .net Framework 2.0, or did you already have that installed? -

Just checked and I've got .NET F/W 2.0 can't remember if it was already installed, but it probably was
