7 character passwords suck
The more people who report this problem, the more it gets noticed.
The company marked this problem solved.

Inappropriate?I hate having to use 8 character passwords. 7 is lucky.
You could always use something easy to remember like, say... 1234567
I’m confused
-
Inappropriate?Here's an interesting article on password length taken from some myspace phishing attacks:
http://www.schneier.com/essay-144.html
Average password length is 8 characters, 17% have 6 or fewer.
There isn't any particular issue with password minimum length of 6 characters.
For now, just add an !, and then when my bosses weigh in, we'll change it. -
Inappropriate?Having talked with the design team about this today I can say that the limit will be reduced.
I’m happy
-
Inappropriate?I wouldn't recommend that particular password, personally.
-
Inappropriate?I think satisfaction should allow special characters in the passwords or at least tell people that special characters are not allowed.
Most of my passwords have special characters and the system just tells me that the passwords do not match - when they do.
special characters - good
unhelpful error messages - bad
I’m silly
-
Inappropriate?What special characters are you using?
I use exclamation points in some of my passwords. If you can give us an example password (obviously not one of your real passwords, but one that fails to save) I can add it into our test suite and ensure those characters work. -
Inappropriate?@ and ! are two characters I usually use. But I think you should allow all the characters on the keyboard:
`~!@#$%^&*()-_+={}|[]\:";'<>?,./*.
I’m confident

Inappropriate?Larry,
As far I know, we do... I've not been able to reproduce the issue. In fact, here's one of our tests, that passes:
it 'should allow all sorts of crazy characters' do
@user.password = '`~!@#$%^&*()-_+={}|[]\:";\'<>?,./*.'
@user.password_confirmation = '`~!@#$%^&*()-_+={}|[]\:";\'<>?,./*.'
@user.should be_valid
end
It would really help me if you could give me an example of password that fails.
Are you by any chance copying and pasting the password from one box into the other? or are you typing it out both times?
Thanks,
Scott -
Inappropriate?Scott,
I just tested this by having the system email me a 'forgot password' email. I then reset it to a password that used @ and it worked.
Another interesting thing happened, it stopped calling me cookie up top.
It may be that this only happens when you are first creating an account and converting it from an 'anonymous' account to a named account. That is when I saw the error.
I’m confused
-
Inappropriate?Larry, this is probably a leftover issue from when we had the anonymous accounts in the system.
-
Inappropriate?If no one else will go through the frustration I went through when trying to register for your system - then I think the world is again a happy place..
I’m thankful
