Besides followers and replies, I'd like an "unread" status count in my dashboard
When I'm paging through topics that I'm participating in, it's very hard to remember whether or not a specific topic had 1, 2, 5 or however many topics when I last looked at it. Something like "there 2 unread replies in this topic" would be *insanely* useful.
Any chance this can be added?

so first off, we're really close -- days away -- from launching the next generation dashboard i promised above. and, we're really happy with it. AND, though it doesn't tell you how many of the replies you personally haven't read, it does tell you how many replies there have been since the last time you replied. we'd like to get it more specific to you as an individual, but we're just not there yet.
rael, your point is a good one, and i'll discuss it with everybody. we haven't had a chance to really get started on company-specific functionality -- ie, things that will make companies and their reps lives a lot easier in the system -- but it's something we're going to be getting to very soon now.

So here's our plan: In the near-term roadmap we're going to build what we're calling "next gen dashboard," which will include a constantly updated list of new topics you've indicated interest in as well as replies from topics you've already participated in. so you can associate yourself with companies, products, tags, and people, and we'll show you new topics based on that. Our version of the "the stream."
Once we've got that in there, we're also going to add in a Google Reader-like view of these topics, so that you have more control over which ones you want to read, which ones you want to dismiss, which ones you have read, which ones you have still to read, that sort of thing. Make the dashboard into an actual dashboard, basically.
To be totally honest, we haven't designed any of this yet -- we're still just trying to get to launch! -- and the topics/replies structure makes the browse interface a little trickier than just having "new posts to view" like in Google Reader. But I'm confident we'll figure it out. And any suggestions you might have are more than welcome!

Inappropriate?Perhaps an approach more like Gmail would work, where there's a simple indication of topic threads that have unread messages within them.

Any chance of just another tab for now, though, alongside the unanswered, recently active, etc? Or what would actually do well enough for now would be "unanswered by me" (even if just a checkbox in the existing "unanswered" tab.

I more than understand where you're coming from and implore you to stick to what you know will make people happier in the long run and all but ignore my personal feature requests (I have to direct that feature-creep energy somewhere ;-).
