We have a tag that has a typo, are we able to correct it?

The people who are able to edit tags on topics are the poster (can remove any tag) and the creator of a tag (can remove the created tag). A stopgap solution is to add a correctly spelled tag, and let the humans ignore the incorrectly spelled tag.
In the office, we've been discussing the pros and cons of allowing company representatives edit tags within their company space, but no conclusions have been reached yet.
I’m hoping that helps at least a little

Inappropriate?Hi Laura,
You can not edit or delete a tag that you didn't add but if you ever see one that needs fixing or is inappropriate and needs deleting, you can either post here and ask us to take care of it for you or email me - amy [at] getsatisfaction [dot] com - or our community manager, Eric - eric [at] getsatisfaction [dot] com.
I’m happy to edit for you

Inappropriate?I think company reps/admins should be given more control over editing of tags, titles, etc.
For example, somehow this post got a really long gibberish tag (a URL!?) that's causing the whole page to render very wide: http://getsatisfaction.com/280north/t...
When a user submits titles, tags, content with typos, incorrect capitalization, etc, it reflects poorly on the company itself.
I understand the desire for uncensored discussion and don't wish to censor my users, but maybe there's some compromise?

Good point. This is something we'd consider, particularly if we auto-posted a note about the change (maintaining that transparency thing). -
This was a weird case though, so I went ahead and deleted the offending tag. -
Inappropriate? Here's the thing: if you want to make a usable meta-data system you need clearly defined terms and in order to get clearly defined terms you need (in this case) company representatives that are well versed in their product to populate the system. This is a mantra Librarians and Information Professionals have been enveloped in for ages.
The current the tagging system is actually LESS transparent because it doesn't distinguish between user generated and company representative tags. So why not add an option to search between the two?
This seems like a solution that would address all of the issues discussed in this thread and the added flexibility would yield better results overall.
I’m looking forward to comments

This would be great as a separate "Idea" topic! -
Great point. -
oooh! I like this. -
Inappropriate?me, too. this is definitely something we're thinking about, though i can't say we know exactly how or when we'll implement it.

Inappropriate? Here's the problem illustrated. Admins need perms to fix user errors.

I’m stymied.

I was your gardener for that one. The roadmap doesn't have an immediate solution to this problem on it. Maybe if we can find another couple developers... :) -
Heh. =) -
Inappropriate? Thanks Cameron, but asking for help on each occurrence is neither efficient nor scalable.
Why not trust admins with tag correction?

P.S. Good seeing you Thor and Amy this weekend. =) -
Good to see you too, Rob. -
Inappropriate?Understood. There has actually been a lot of talk recently about the level of control company reps have and how we can best meet their needs while also adhering to our basic philosophies. We are currently working on more moderation tools and will continue to evolve these as we go. I'll be sure we discuss tag-editing.
I’m excited about future revs.

Inappropriate? While I'd love to just say "Sure! Of course, we'll get right on it!" the reality of the situation is that this specific request will likely be solved within the next few months, rather than the next few weeks.
I'm beginning some major work on the structure of how people relate to the companies and products in Get Satisfaction. Part of that work will be defining the roles, and therefore permissions that each person has in a particular context. Those roles and permissions will affect who can edit tags, as well as a host of other things. I have a feeling that we'll address your concerns about tag editing within the scope of that work.
I’m scheduled

Inappropriate?Cameron, we can't turn admin on instead of off before the tech re-arch?
Amy, you want me to email you each time I see tagging errors, really?
I’m conflicted.
-
Inappropriate?Thankfully, Rob, you're the only one who has made this request of me so sure! email me as much as you like. ;)
Seriously, though, yeah, in the short term, if you need tag clean-up that's how we'll have to deal with it. You can send an email to info@ and that will get to me as well as our community manager, eric, (and thor & lane too). One of us will be able to help you out at any given time.
And this is definitely a problem we want to solve. It just has to happen in the context of the bigger picture we're working on.
I’m confident we'll find the right solution soon
-
Inappropriate?Understood.
I think I'll post the tag fix requests to this topic/thread so we can track volume/time.
thx, Rob -
Good idea! -
Ah, the Chinese drip torture strategy for getting third party product teams to prioritize your feature requests. Very clever!
