What about product only entries?
Some products don't have companies! For example, Chris Blizzard of mozilla makes whoisi.com on his own time, he's not a company, and it feels weird adding him as one. It'd be neat if products that don't have a company could be added. It's also silly to make a company (Adium) just to add the product (Adium). maybe there's an adium foundation I'm not aware of (I am pretty sure there isn't!) but I have seen often times a company created where there shouldn't be one.

Inappropriate?I suppose it is silly in some instances, but in most instances, there are people behind a product who are expected to be responsible for how that product works. It seems to me that the reality is that even a loose collaboration of open-source developers has a responsibility to respond to or help the people who choose to use the product their developing. Of course, that doesn't mean they will, does it?
As we move forward, we will get to the point where we will be able to do almost what you suggest: make a product also "be" a company. That is, those can be bundled together. That's a little down the road, but we do want to create a way to deal with these kind of exceptions to our organizational system.
