What has to get improved
2. Why is the standard answer form at a question/idea/problem/discussion one that answers the last comment instead of the main question? That's stupid! I always might answer the question itself.
If I'd want to answer the persons comment, I can do it via the link.
3. I'd like to get much faster access to "my" products added, as the reason I added them is, I can immediatly get on their site(s), when I start getsatisfaction.com! I don't want to have to bookmark my sub-URL!
4. Companies/products should be find "Dash Command"-like, e.g. I searched your company "Get Satisfaction" with "getsatisfaction" and there was no search result!!
5. Why can't I delete a product/service, when I'm not the administrator of the group? I can't even possibly delete the products/services created by myself in such a group! This is not collaborative!
6. An product-URL I reposted got posted as "http://getsatisfaction.com/company name/...". So the "shortening" thing isn't that good. Although I don't know a solution for it.
So far for now what got my attention in around 10 minutes of using Get Satisfaction. ;)
Thanks anyway, great idea and relatively ;) usable! :)
The more people who like this idea, the more it gets noticed.
The company is considering this idea.

Inappropriate? Thanks for the detailed feedback! Can you clarify your last point (#6)? I'm not clear on what you mean exactly.
-
I think he's talking about the fact that we truncate URLs to a given length, but most of the time that ends up looking like http://getsatisfaction.com/somethi... which is very non-specific and doens't show well what it's linking to. -
Inappropriate?Great points. I might have to address some of these separately. Lots here.
I'll start with #1: Yes, this is different. We're not sure anyone has done such a thing, so we understand your point of view. Part of the reason we've done this is to encourage folks to create better titles. In the past, some folks would simply enter their entire question into the title field. Like this:

Sometimes, people just start typing. Especially folks who may not have had a lot of experience creating topics a la traditional forum systems. That is, they're not thinking about presentation, just getting it all out. That's not everyone's experience, obviously, but that's something we saw happening.
Since we've made this change, the titles have become dramatically better -- more readable, more scannable, and more sensible. We could try it other ways, too, and we might. But, you're right: It's very different.

Actually, the title as second step design is borrowed from Ask Metafilter. They experimented a lot and ended up with this structure for the reasons that Eric mentions above--the very fact that it disrupts the expected flow causes people to think more carefully about what they enter. -
Oh, didn't realize MetaFilter did it, too. Well, we're following in good footsteps, I'd say. -
Fwiw, I actually like that the title comes after, because the act of writing the description helps me figure out what the title should be. -
Inappropriate?Hey Eric! Thanks for your reply! That's a really interesting point!
Didn't know that of course, so I think this is acceptable.
Do you have any data on the improvement? I'm just curious.
@Thor: Sorry for being unprecise. This is a rare problem I think (hence #6).
I happened to post sth. on the wrong place / wanted to copy the URL (both scenarios) and only afterwards recognized, that the copying of the shortened URL didn't copy the whole URL (of course?), but only the above URL with the "...".
This of course couldn't work, so I had to edit all my posts with the copied URL.
A solution proposal: Use the possibility of BBCode or XHTML wrapping, so one can insert a long URL, without having to use a lot of space or break the URL (line break).
Or is BBCode activated?

Inappropriate?I don't have data. I'm a word guy, so data is admittedly not one of my strong suits. I'm not sure it is possible to pull out data about question-asking clarity, but I'm sure there's some way to quantify it. If the developers have a way to pull out that data (and who knows, they might), I'll let you know.

Inappropriate? The way to measure this would be to get the average number of chracters/words per title in the month before and after we moved the title field to its current position. Of course, we also added the feedback bar which suggests that users reduce the number of words so it'll be difficult to tell how much of the immediate improvement was caused by each change. But it would provide a meaningful measure of the whole effect.

Inappropriate?Philipp,
To address #4: we are also working on improving our search, and we wholeheartedly agree that typing getsatisfaction into search should let you find Get Satisfaction (and that all similar cases should work that way, too).
To address #2: The title of the box I'm typing into right now is "Reply to Philipp Grunwald's idea." I realize it appears at the bottom of the page, but that's also exactly where the content you add to it appears. The newest reply to the original posting is at the end of the current conversation. The smaller "Add a comment" links are present under each reply to allow you to make an aside to that particular person, without causing everyone in the conversation to be alerted.
I think we have more to respond to, like #5 and #3, but I hope I've addressed some of your concerns.
I’m thankful for your feedback

Inappropriate?Addressing #5: We don't allow every user to delete products because, well, we don't want someone to decide to delete the iPhone -- and thereby disassociate the 194 topics that are attached to it. I suppose what I'm saying is that we don't want any single user to have the ability to destroy the collaborative work of other users. We're pretty big on respecting the content people have created, but I'll admit that our system isn't perfect. We're still working out the details.
We're trying to instill a sense of ownership from the companies who do participate. Their admins have the ability to remove clearly bogus products, as you mention, but even they won't be able to remove products that have a lot of activity around them -- products that are established by the community. We want to preserve the work that's already been done, but we certainly can do better at making sure the process is as collaborative as possible.
In general, we err on the side of keeping more information, and deleting as little data as possible. More information can always be edited, but deleted data is gone forever.

Inappropriate?@Cameron: Concerning #2, I'm currently really wondering, because you are right. ;)
But as I went the first time on such a comment site, it was somehow different! *confused* But now, of course, I just think about that I replied intuitively via the huge form at the bottom and of course this is the normal reply.
Don't know what had happened there with me, sorry. ;-)
@Eric: #5 That's a good point, sorry for not thinking about it! I'm just always thinking about the good side / good people. ;-) But maybe you could protect yourself / the site from that through a system like wikipedia, where you can restore it and maybe ban users who abuse this possibility? If this is not to technically challenging...
Ok, to differentiate it (it didn't do it before, sorry), I also meant that: Concerning the companies, THEY should be a 100% in power!! But in my case, where I had this product, the company site was still a placeholder "owned" by SOMEONE, don't know who, but as the info said, not the company itself or any employee.
Of course, preservation of existing work is THE most important issue.
SOLUTION !! (came to my mind now!)
I just described the problem wrong! --> The problem is for me, that I am not able to EDIT the TITLE of any product, so I could change the product from bogus to useful! :)
I’m thankful

Well, not quite. We intend to be a neutral ground, where both customers and companies are equally respected and nobody is censored by corporate interest or other users (barring an exception for spam, which we do not allow).
I’m feeling a little bit like the Swiss
