Why the comment textarea is so small?
The more people who ask this question, the more it gets noticed.

Inappropriate? We've tried to design the comment system such that you feel compelled to "upgrade" to a full reply when you write anything longer than a sentence. That is why we've made the text form so small as well as removing the ability to mark a comment as the answer or supply an emotion.
We want comments to become very small asides (we even considered calling them asides rather than comments) such as "Thanks! that worked" or "What a troll :(" rather than something longer than say a tweet in length.
Some people were having trouble in following conversations that were partially threaded as we had it, and some people were mistakenly making top-level replies rather than comments to a running sub-thread. It made for some very messy discussions that were hard to read when you came to them fresh, so we're mixing it up right now to try and improve things.
I've found that when I want to reply to someone directly rather than just posting a comment a prefix the message with an @name like twitter: "@johnny5alive blah blah blah"
I’m hoping that helps

Inappropriate?Scott,
I would disabled the comment option and give the option for thumb up/down for an answer and leave only the replies boxes.. just like it been done at http://www.yedda.com.
and when I'm commenting on some other guy reply I'll refer it to him as:
"Scott,
I agree but..."
less complicated.. don't you think?
p.s
the edit option for my replies are great I assume you took it from 37signals, right?
I’m hoping you'll get my suggestion

Inappropriate? We definitely considered that option Oren, but decided that in the end having simply a thumbs up and thumbs down button would discourage human interaction and community when compared with having the current commenting mechanism.
In the future the text for a comment may be optional, and you'll be able to choose from a set of stickers that you can apply along with the optional text to give kudos to the replier. Similar, to the compliment feature in Yelp.

I'm not sure if there was any specific inspiration of the Edit/Delete other than an amalgamation of experience with various inline editing mechanisms around the web.

Inappropriate?Oren, I agree. I posted a problem, got a suggested solution, took it and then needed a handful of lines to explain the results (its a technical problem). Having a two line comment box sucked. I ended up posting and editing twice because I missed mistakes
I’m feeling retarded

Yes I agree -
Inappropriate?tnx silvervein.
Scott I hope you're listening (not just hearing :-))
I’m glad not being the only "cry baby"

Inappropriate?Oren,
I'm Listening, please don't mistake my comments before as shutting you down, I was simply trying to provide some insight into how we came to design the system.
That isn't to say that things are stuck where they are. The way is always open when it comes to changing the app, and any decision we made in the past is open to re-decision in the future.

Inappropriate?I know you are. I was just teasing u guys...
don't get me wrong, I think you do a hell of a job with this site and even if u'll decide to stay with this comment area there's still no substitute to GetSatisfaction :-)
I’m thankful

Inappropriate? There is definitely a usability issue with the comment and reply system. The problem (and solution) are simple. Currently user's are given two options for contributing to a topic. They can either "Reply to [topic author]" or they can add a comment on one of the replies.
Unfortunately there's no option for "Reply to [someone else's reply]". As a user, I'm left wondering, "I know it's Fred's topic, but I want to reply to Barney's reply... how am I supposed to do that?"
The solution is to label the reply form, "Add a Reply", instead of, "Reply to [topic author]". That way there's no assumption about who my reply will be directed at.
I’m truncated

Inappropriate? We're about to release some changes to the commenting design that should (I hope) address everyone's well articulated feedback. Thanks again.
