I'm getting closer moving full steam ahead on getting a 4.0 version of Check Off built for everyone to enjoy. The original Check Off codebase was built in the 10.2/Jaguar days, so I'm using this opportunity to wipe the slate clean and start from scratch.
What I'd like to know is the following:
1. What you really like about Check Off 3
2. What you really dislike about Check Off 3
3. What could I add to Check Off 4 that would make it your preferred quick todo list?
I have some suggestions for Check Off
1. Drag and drop to iCal. Drag the Check Off icon onto the a day and time in iCal.
2. A global Expand/collapse toggle for all Check Off topics in pull down menu.
3. Time Arrange items under topic. Optional alphabetic, user, or time order for topic items.
4. Timeline view of timed items. Perhaps have a line that represents a day, week or month. Have a graphic (maybe a dot) that is time-linked to an item in your Check Off list. When you mouseover the dot in the timeline, the corresponding item in the list is highlighted.
5. Timed items due today could be optionally listed in a topic at the top of the Check Off listing.
Check Off handles ToDo items more effectively than iCal at the moment. I am using Check Off so that I can carry my Check Off ToDo list with me in iCal on my iPod Touch.
Here is a listing of steps to do this. I export my Check Off list to a text file to my Desktop. Then open iCal and open the exported Check Off list in TextEdit. Then select and drag the text list to the first day of the month in Month, Week, or Day views. It is automatically labelled as ToDo at 12AM or anytime I wish and is part of my iCal calendar.
The Check Off list syncs with your iPhone or iPod Touch beautifully and anywhere else you use iCal. Anytime I update my Checkoff ToDo list, I delete the old one and drag a new one to iCal. If I have a hierarchical project with many steps, I can make a project todo list and drag just that list to any day and time on my iCal calendar.
I use my to-do for a lot of projects, I like today's simple interface, but it doesn't meet my needs for 3 reasons.
1. I can't view the notes I have about my to-do's. I store all of my info about a project in the notes section, and give it a title. The events already show the notes, but the to-do's do not. I have to have some way to view the notes in to-do's.
2. I need to be able to at least make basic changes to the date, and to the notes. Since I know from the other posts this will be in a future release I'll leave it alone.
3. When I set a to-do date, it is the day it is do which means I want to work on it for "x" number of days/weeks in advance. Your program only show the to-do's that are currently due today. Would like the option to set how far before a to-do's due date to show. (I would like at least a month out)
Those are the 3 major barriers I have that prevent me from purchasing your program.
Another thought is integration with check off (which I use, but don't like menu bar ui). It shouldn't be a high priority now, but the concept of integration it should make it easier later.
I am already using Check Off and just installed Today to have a quick look.
I much prefer the interface and look of Today. I wonder if it would be possible to give events a category so that I could select which events I look at from individual categories to all categories. I know users ask for too many features without giving due consideration to the software developers or other users so please take this idea with a grain of salt.
I like Check Off and will continue using it but I much prefer the look and feel of Today.
