Bug with Today when using Spaces?

Justin, could you check out the program 'Anxiety'? It can be configured to use only a menu bar icon and still respects this preference. Perhaps you could contact the developer to find out how he worked around this issue

I have this problem also, but have found a workaround solution for now:

- In Today's Preferences, set a hot key for Today, and/or set it to appear in the Menu Bar
- Also in Preferences, check the checkbox to Keep Today on top of other applications
- In Spaces Preferences, set the application Today to appear in Every Space

Now you can use Today's hot key or menu bar icon to make spaces appear in the current Spaces desktop. You may have to hit the hot key up to three times, or click the menu bar icon three times. I think the reason you need multiple clicks is so that the Today window can close in the Spaces desktop in which it is open and then reopen in the current Spaces desktop. If you close the Today window by using the hot key or menu bar icon before you switch out of a Spaces desktop, then it only takes one instance of using the hot key or menu bar icon to reopen Today in the current (new) Spaces desktop.

Hope that explanation makes sense. It's a little cumbersome, but workable.
