Check Off 4.0: What Do You Want?

Hey everyone,

I'm getting closer moving full steam ahead on getting a 4.0 version of Check Off built for everyone to enjoy. The original Check Off codebase was built in the 10.2/Jaguar days, so I'm using this opportunity to wipe the slate clean and start from scratch.

What I'd like to know is the following:

1. What you really like about Check Off 3
2. What you really dislike about Check Off 3
3. What could I add to Check Off 4 that would make it your preferred quick todo list?

Thanks for the feedback everyone!

happy I’m thankful

    Justin:

You've really got a great app -- just read your blog entry

"If you had asked me at this time last year how I felt about the AppStore and developing for the iPhone platform I would have told you about what a great experience it is. "

I feel for you. In reply to your request for ideas.....I have been looking for apps like yours -- downloaded about 50 or so of them (some freeware / donationware / shareware / demo versions) I have come down to 2 that fit the bill for: simplicity, and functionability:

    1) ActionGear
    2) Check Off

    I like in your app:
    - that it is menu based (doesn't appear when "tabbing" through open applications, and doesn't appear in the dock)
    - simple interface with multiple leveling / categories
    - keyboard shortcuts are good
    - (keeping it free / donationware would be nice)
    - the print / export feature is great

Things I would like to see:
    - more of a hierarchy -- like a left-hand "category-like" listing (tabs might also be nice)
    - more universal-type keyboard shortcuts (eg: command-n for new)
    - right-click features: bold, background colour, etc.
    - when something is done, cross it out and make it grey (put it in the "done" area -- it is always nice to see what you have accomplished, if not just to have a record of it.....)
    - an ALARM feature -- most of the apps out there don't have this feature -- don't know why, but I use alarms daily but having all in one app would be great
    - deadline for completion of an item -- then change the colour to red before it is due
    - I understand your thinking behind preferences, but having more user-defined preferences will make (even) more satisfied users (perhaps a happy-medium type of approach -- i.e. for those that like tabs, have 'enable tabs' checkbox in preferences.....)
    - method for "categorizing" entries (tags?)
    - searchable entries
    - definitely keep it menubar based, but perhaps make the window draggable to that it remains in the same position when next accessed
    - instead of having to click the icon in the menubar to make it "disappear" clicking outside of the window (losing focus?) would make it a bit easier
    - adding an import feature to make it easier to "switch from other apps"

Just a few thoughts after testing dozens of apps over the last few days, and finding a surprising lack of features in most, or a high price tag to pay for features that mostly will never be used.

Although I have never been involved in "localizing" an app, if you need help with Japanese, I'd be willing to help there.

I don't know you know, the one thing I would like is to see is, IT. I've been waiting a long time, over a year I think and am rather taken by Google's immature, but released, Tasks app. Simply having it online means that I can get to it anywhere.

I still use Check Off for the long URLs, which don't suit Tasks so well, but am slipping away to Tasks. I think the most important thing is to release something, a beta perhaps, because I find now that the wait for what I need is not worth it. Almost.

    1. Integration with a web based interface, then with iGoogle, iPhone, etc
    2. Automatic saving to html (currently export doesnt work Tiger, G4, Checkoff 3.8)

I agree on both acounts, I like the OS for OS X that Check Off has but would need Google's service to make it work everywhere, and auto exporting is a good backup method, maybe every week or something, something in the settings.

    Justin,

I have no problem paying the 12.95 for any good program (like Check Off) that I use. But because Check Off is locked onto my desktop mac only; not able to be synced with my laptop and not able to be carried or copied to my Mobileme or iPhone, it sits on my desktop unused. I NEED to portable-ize my to do lists and despite a year of waiting I still can't with Check Off. Please partner with someone who can help you solve that problem and "the check is in the mail".

Syncing Mac to Mac interests me and is something I am planning to investigate.

Syncing to the iPhone is not currently on my radar for technical reasons as well as political reasons dealing with the AppStore. Not to mention that it is a completely separate product that takes time and resources to build.

That opinion may change in the future, but if you're waiting to pull the trigger on whether to buy the app or not based on a companion iPhone app, I'd tell you to look elsewhere at this time.

I agree with Perfectspeed. I will not pay for a new version of check off if my lists cannot be synchronised with my smartphone.

    PerfectSpeed + Ballemi:

Have either of you tried "Portable Check Off" -- it might just be what you are looking for.....

If CheckOff lists can be brought into iCal, (and I do this every few days by exporting to a txt file and copy/drag portions of the txt file to the ToDo Items column of iCal), iCal is a vehicle for syncing with the iPhone. By drag/drop anything from the ToDo Items column into your calendar, the iPhone syncs to any event entry of iCal. This is a one-way process from CheckOff to iCal.

In my daily usage of CheckOff, I drag CheckOff ToDo items named Today to 12 midnight of each day of my iCal calendar, as well as my Next list for the future to 11PM on my calender. In that way I carry around in iCal my most urgent ToDos from CheckOff in my iPod Touch where ever I go.

Justin Williams has been dropping hints of his interests to provide a syncing mechanism for Check Off, but until this release he was dead against charging, something I personally suggested to move the product forward. Now this isn't a dig but I think he has to look at the product and say x,y and z are what it needs to not just survive, but to WORK.
Not that he and his team haven't done this, but there needs to be an admission on the devs part that currently its an incomplete system.

A ToDo list now has to span several devices; portable and fixed, thus always accessible. Either through a web interface or syncing with direct connections, reading the comments confirm this.

I feel v4x is a base of which can now be built upon to serve these desires, Check Off should be sold in a pack, not just part of a solution, but a whole one. Either that or the ability to utilise standards of some sort so that other companies apps can fill those gaps, as Check Off is clearly a favorite for some to use in their overall solution, most would rather keep it.

Personally, I've mentioned this before, I like Google Tasks right now, but it can't be plugged into. Simply put it has the ability to be viewed online (in GMail) and to work on the iPhone and so it is ahead of Check Off, if the two could co-operate well that would be magic, but if I had to choose right now I'm still 50/50. Tasks is an immature app, so that really speaks for its simple ability to be there when I need it.

Check Off has to be more bold than it is now, its also a paid solution, but it must become a greater solution like Don't Forget The Milk with GMail integration etc... or its basically dead. I don't know how many more people have to tell these guys this.

At this point I will finally chime in and agree completely with figaro about the need for portability across all Mac platforms. Although there are several ways this can be accomplished, Justin and crew must decide soon which one to use and make the next update include seamless synchronization for all current Mac platforms. When this is done, the demand and money will be forthcoming.
