How attached are you to the menu-bar attachment?
I am hard at work on Check Off 4, and I am hoping to share a bit more with you all in the coming weeks and months. One issue I'm considering with 4.0 is ditching the menu-bar attachment and making Check Off it's own, small window. This would make it handle Spaces a bit better, allow it to show up in the Dock, work with Exposé and give me a bit more freedom with the user interface.
It'd still be a small app, just not attached to the menubar. How would you feel about this?

Inappropriate?I rely on checkoff being in the menu bar, I don't want a dock app taking up space as it will shrink my icon sizes because it takes up space. The todo app will always be open and I think the menu bar is best for that.
Glad to see attention being focused on the app! especially as 'Notes' was updated to synch with the new iPhone 3.0 software update. Can't wait to see it work, but if it changes to a dock app I might not like it as much as I do now. In the dock its out of the way.
I’m saddened

Inappropriate?I should have been more clear. The black check will still be in the menu-bar, but I'm curious about whether people actually want the Check off window attached to the menu bar or free floating.
-
Inappropriate?Oh, I love the free flow look, I don't think it slows it down really, its a nice animation (that should stay an 'option'). People want different things, why not allow for many views and with some features disabled, that way you can please everyone.
I have saved this RSS as a feed in my google reader, will it be the route for updated news on the progress of Check Off? If so please update, its good to hear about the app.. I'd like to know what else from the long request list is being baked into the new 4.0 release (I know that the floating idea of ours is one of your main concerns).
Thanks.
I’m indifferent

The sheet animation from 3.0 is gone. I'm just toying with what to replace it with. I am not a fan of preferences, so I'm opening up what to do as the replacement for feedback. -
Inappropriate? It looks to me like you want to push the idea ahead, I like Check Off as it is so anything else for me is not what I'm looking for.
I’m sad
-
Inappropriate?I wouldn't be a fan of having it show-up in the dock. If it were strictly executed as a background app activated with a key stroke, that would be fine.
-
Inappropriate?I can understand not adding heaps of unmaintainable features, but disliking preferences? Pure madness, boy!
Personally, I like the simplicity of the app and the accessibility of the menubar, but if it's not actually attached, it's not necessarily a big deal.
What I gather people most like about Check-Off is that it appears when you want it and gets out of your way quickly. Using a normal window that way might be weird and not make sense. You could go with some other effect along the lines of dashboard but that would just add a new arbitrary metaphor. Instead, it could be a menu that hangs around extra long—something like the help menu.
I second the notion of keeping the app out of the dock.
(Again, asking a forum of people what they want to see in an application and then admitting to not liking preferences is probably a bad way to start your day.) -
My dislike of preferences has to do with me not wanting to maintain multiple window styles just to please everyone. I'd rather please myself and a majority with a default window style and be done with it. Less code to maintain.
I'm still not sold on doing the free-floating window, but I'm also not a fan of how I have it attached to the window right now either. -
Inappropriate?I press a key combo now and it slides in, I like that - being a former windows user that kind of effect always reminds me of the superior platform I'm on. But that's no more, fine, but I hope the replacement is just as good looking because I know Windows is all into its tinted glass stuff...
Do you have a list of the things your going to add (i.e. iPhone sync support :) ) so that people have an idea what to expect, and then they can discuss things. This is one feature here, but has no illustrations or mock ups, how about something more tangible.
Thanks. It looks like you have a passionate bunch using your app.
I’m confident

Not ready to commit to what's going to be in 4.0 yet. I scrapped the old codebase and started from scratch rewriting everything using Mac OS X Leopard. I'm just now getting it back to where 3.8 was in terms of functionality and am modernizing the UI. Feedback on how the window attaches is part of that. -
Inappropriate?Looks good, thanks for the pic. I can adjust to that, but whatever you do it has to look good. Really I'm expecting you to bring what you had, modernise it like you say, but most of all to address the concerns that are posted in the forum, some new features too would all add up to keeping you busy.
I’m happy

Inappropriate?Nice. Maybe your solution is a tear-off menu. So, it can be torn away to be persistent or fold back up to be out of the way. I recall an old OS 9 app that allowed menus to be torn-off. Think it was called Custom Menus by Marc Moni?
-
Inappropriate?I'd just reiterate what others have said: I like the menu bar, would like to see the ability to hide it from the dock still exist, and think that screenshot is a great, maybe even perfect, idea.
I’m excited

Inappropriate?I like the simplicity of check off and I've grown so accustomed to having it in the menu bar with the drop down effect. I also doublecllick and have the menu move along the top of the menu bar (probably a bug, but works, try it). I'm for less clutter and having it float or be another window ... oh, well, I would adjust to it. Be great to integrate with iphone in some way. (since ical/busycal does not)
