How can I make Today's to-do features more robust or like check off?

Is there any way to make the to-do list in today behave like the one in check off? I don't like that you must set due dates and that you can only see items due today. I'm considering buying Today but I will just use check off if there's no way to modify today's behavior. Might the to-do section of the program deserve its own pane in preferences? Thanks for your time.
