Both. In a full iCal window you already know the days of the week from its column headings; Today needs to call them out explicitly.

Otherwise you can get into a scenario where you schedule a business meeting for 10 days from now and not be able to see that the date is actually a Sunday.

I would recommend the following:

In the grey date browser, include the day as directed above. That simply makes sense.

In the "Today field," allow customization by preferences for the following:
- include day of week or not
- include year or not
- include current time or not, with options like in the Date & Time Clock Preferences (e.g. to use 24-hour clock)

I would personally have it read "Today is April 23, 10:21 AM" for example, as I usually already know what day it currently is (and the year!), but I may not know the exact time, which is relevant because Today is listing Events with time.

Obviously, I could and do use OS X's menu bar to display time, but on a MacBook I've had times where my menu bar is crowded, and it would be nice if I could remove the clock from the menu bar in favor of Today's icon, and simply click that when I need a quick check of the time.
