Transparency Problems

Transparency problem in Check Off: If 0 were fully transparent and 100 were fully opaque, I can only seem to adjust between 12 and 13! Actually, I don't think the interface adjusting at all and its default setting (for me) is so transparent that I can hardly make out any text. Has this happened to anyone else?

The supplied image was captured while the "Transparency" setting in Preferences was fully to the right. I have tried it fully to the left, which results in no difference to the opacity/transparency of the window. Based on the slightly better UI of your Today product [it offers labels on the slider], which I also reviewed -- and whose transparency setting does, in fact, seem to work -- Check Off seems to be stuck at "80%".

Are you saying that the transparency slider isn't working for you? I don't quite follow.

    Inappropriate?
Two things, Justin: (1) Manipulating the slider produced no change in the opacity, no matter in what position I left it. When returning to the preferences dialog, my previous setting was retained but, again, moving to a different spot on the slider, including its extremes, changed nothing in terms of the opacity/transparency. If this is what you mean by the slider "not working", then, indeed, the slider is not working. When I initially entered the bug report I was assuming that the slider control itself was working (I could adjust it) but that its value wasn't being respected. However, (2) In re-using the app a moment ago, now Check Off seems to be working properly in this respect. Opacity is solid when the slider is set all the way to the left; transparency is quite high (much like the image I uploaded earlier) when it's all the way to the right. In the intervening time between now and when I submitted the bug report, I logged off and on (well, powered off and on) -- so that must be a key variable in correcting the phenomenon I described. As it was, I was seeing the transparency 'problem' immediately after installation.

Also, now that I can see the app better, I am noticing a couple of rendering problems: The application initially paints behind a window if that window would otherwise block it. Then, immediately after rendering behind the window, Check Off *and* that window are re-rendered such that Check Off is on top, which results in a slight blink-like effect. Shouldn't Check Off just render on top to start with?

And, finally, the left and right sides of the 'label' (rows that are colored), which are normally rendered with rounded corners, seem to render improperly as the window is getting re-sized. That is, a given label will have sharp, rectangular edges as the window is being re-sized (while the mouse is down) which are re-rendered as curved edges when the mouse is released. This phenomenon is not is not consistent but, for me, occurs about 90% of the time. Moreoever, if Check Off's application window is initially widened (rather than narrowed), the original, right-hand edge's rounded corners can be seen staying in place while, following to the right is a new 'extension' of the label in the correct color; but that 'extension' portion has sharp , 90-degree left corners, which are filled-in or overlayed with the label color after about 1 to 1.25 seconds (even if window resizing is still going on), ultimately giving the impression of a single solid horizontal bar of color. But in the intervening 1 second or so, that little gap in the label, obviously, shouldn't be visible. And, if the window is ever narrowed, the label's right-hand edge is truncated and is later (only after the mouse is released) rendered with curved corners. Open up iCal, create an appointment (which will show with curved corners), and then horizontally re-size iCals application frame. You'll see that the appointment item's rounded corners are constantly preserved.

And this brings to mind a question. Any plan to integrate/coordinate with iCal's "To Do" list--sort of what your Today app does for iCal appointments, but for the To Do's?

    Hey,

These are niggling little issues, but I probably won't resolve them. I consider Check Off 3 to be legacy code since I started from a completely blank slate for 4.0. Rather than fixing stuff in the old code, I'll just make sure it works properly in the updated version.

As for iCal integration, I'm not using iCal's tasks stuff as the storage engine, but I will offer import/export to iCal functionality. I wanted to use the iCal task stuff as the storage engine, but it's not powerful enough presently to do it in a logical way.
