What Today needs to be ultra-useful!
Just played with it for a few minutes. Great idea, great potential. From a GTD perspective, it could be a requirement (see my other comment). However, the following would need to change, IMHO. Sorry if these are already there.
o Vertical space is wasted. To fix this: 1. More compact list (shorter items). The current item size is far too large for someone who has many tasks/events. They should be in a more traditional small list format, e.g., the Finder's size. 2. Get rid of the two items at the top "Today is [date]" and "[date]" and put them in the menubar.
o Support deleting as an alternative to checking, or make checking delete the item. This is a work-around to the iCal bug: "Delete items after __ days" is broken.
o Group items by calendar, and sort calendars same as in iCal.
o Natural language input. the Quicksilver iCal plugin does this, including handling "fri at 2pm" and "4/5 3p-5p meet bob". Extremely important for rapid capture. Saves many keystrokes.
Thanks for the nice program!

Inappropriate?Only a comment on the vertical space issue:
I agree about the "Today is ..." bar seeming superfluous when I've already go the date in my menu bar (although it does serve to set the calendar to the current day).
The second bar (date selection) is a necessary interface for controlling the viewport, IMHO. I don't see how you could cut it or move it off of the window to the menu bar. Resize or rethink it, maybe, but not get rid of it.
Maybe thin out (vertically) the date selection bar, group the arrows on the right side, and add a "Today" button to the left side to jump to the current date.

Inappropriate? The Today bar is not superfluous!
One could easily have the calendar set to a different date, and as Geoff points out, clicking it quickly moves the calendar back to Today.
Now, all of the info in the Today bar might not be needed, which is why I and others have in other threads suggested possibly customizing the info shown there. For example, my ideal Today bar would read: Today is May 1st, 08:00 AM. I don't need the year, nor the name of the day because I know it's Thursday already, but I often forget the current date and having the time would be useful for me.
Finally, I think the Today bar is charming and sets the Today application apart from iCal and others, it's a mission statement of sorts. It'd be a shame to lose it, in my opinion.

Inappropriate? Here's some more comments on your points:
Regarding vertical space, I don't have the same concern. My Finder List View text size is the default of 12 pt. While I'm not certain, I believe the Today font for Events and Tasks looks about 13 pt. Not a large difference. I suppose you're more concerned with the "bubble of color"; the color is important to distinguish between different calendars. The bubble only adds a few more pixels to the top and bottom and looks "right" to me.
Perhaps the following idea for "two pane view" might relieve your vertical concerns?

Regarding deleting items, Justin has already stated that full editing of items is planned for some future release of Today. One would assume this would include deletions.

Regarding grouping items, I agree, but this might be a problem. See the following thread:

That's in regards to tasks, not events. But it might be an issue for the grouping you want in general.

Inappropriate? The "Today Is" bar is here to stay. I'm planning to allow users to customize it in a future release, but I certainly don't think its superfluous.
Thanks for the suggestions. I haven't really thought of Today in a GTD mentality, so I'm always interested in hearing how others are using it (or want to be able to use it)!
I’m thankful
