Damaged AIR file when updating to Twhirl 0.8.7.
While attempting to update to the new release, to fix Twitter authentication issues (version 0.8.7), I've run into a major problem. Using the in-app update button and the install now button on the Twhirl site both provide the same error below.
"Sorry, an error has occured.
The application could not be installed because the AIR file is damaged. Try obtaining a new AIR file from the application author."
Any help? Currently I'm stuck without any desktop app for Twitter, and it's really annoying, especially when this fix is basically forced on us.

After a couple hours of tweaking in Linux I think I've narrowed down the problem.. For all of you running Ubuntu uninstall Twhirl by opening the Synaptic Package Manager (System/Administration/Synaptic) simply type in Twhirl and there should be one package installed, remove it. (you might want to do this with any other air apps you have installed too) Next uninstall AIR too (from synaptic or the applications menu) Wait to reinstall because there is one particular folder that causes some issues. Navigate to your home folder (/home/username/) and press Ctrl+H to show all the hidden folders. Open the .appdata folder this contains all the configuration files for your AIR apps and if you were switching over from the beta or having some issues that folder can cause you troubles. Its safe to delete the whole folder. Then reinstall AIR and Twhirl and bingo you're back in business!
note: not sure if it's related or not but I also deleted all AIR files in /opt/ and /var/opt/ (make sure you're root) and did a search for twhirl and AIR files and deleted them all. I also reinstalled flash.

Thanks for the advice. I was skeptical but downloading the Linux version fixed Twhirl which I was using inside Windows Vista -
Thanks for the suggestion. I tried it and it works perfectly. -

Inappropriate? The same is happening for me (on Windows XP). I even tried to download and install Twhirl from twhirl.org and got the same error. I now have a non-working Twhirl and no way to successfully upgrade!
I’m cut off from my twitter network

Inappropriate?@kate Did you try installing the Linux .air package (http://www.twhirl.org/files/twhirl-0....)? That worked for me after the update failed and downloading Twhirl from the website also failed. Good luck!
I’m disappointed that no one from the company has even made a comment on such a large bug.

Inappropriate? Thanks for the reply. After my previous post, I kept looking around online and found a solution that fixed it for me:
- In C:\Program Files, rename the twhirl folder to something else.
- Download the .air installer for twhirl, then run it.
Now I'm twhirling again!
I’m glad we can at least help each other if the company is ignoring us.

Thanks for the tip and glad you got it working. I agree, too bad it's up to the users to find solutions... -
Thanks for sharing this Kate. The solution you provided fixed the error though as Matt suggested downloading and installing the Linux version on Windows fixes the problem as well.
Good to see social networking assisting people -
Inappropriate?I tried the Linux AIR file Matt suggested and got the same error message about the damaged AIR file.

Inappropriate?I've tried both twhirl-0.8.7 and whirl-0.8.7-air11. The problem remains the same: "The application could not be installed because the AIR file is damaged. Try obtaining a new AIR file from the application author."
I'm using Adobe AIR 1.5 on a Ubuntu 8.10 box.
I’m frustrated

Inappropriate?same problem ... version 0.8.6 doesn't work anymore ... and updating my AIR version from 1.1 to 1.5 (so I can move to 0.8.7) doesn't work either ... so I'm stuck ... haven't been on twitter in 2 weeks.
I’m irritated

Inappropriate?Finally figured it out ...
removed all registry entries associated with it (just do a search for 'twhirl' in regedit and *carefully* delete keys and entries ... if you don't know what you're doing, then wait for detailed instructions from twhirl staff)
After that the 0.8.7 install went swimmingly
Good luck guys!
PS: Twhirl needs to get on top of this ... or release a patch to fix this problem programmatically ... not everyone has the love of twitter or the patience to sit there and manually get this thing to work ... at the severe risk of hosing their computer.
WAKE UP!!!
I’m disappointed with twhirl staff

Thanks Joel!
Just uninstalling the Twhirl package using synaptic and delleting the ~/.appdata configuration solved the issue! -
Joel, you're the man, Twhirl is the only twitter app I like and I having it not work on Ubuntu just wasn't fair. -
Yeah!! this resolved my problem.
Thanks -
Inappropriate?I'm having this problem trying to install using the Linux installer on Ubuntu (newest distro). I've never installed Twhirl on this computer before, and I just installed Adobe Air, which seems to work fine. I can't use Joel's solution because Twhirl is not installed.

Inappropriate?@puredoxyk Double check and see if the .appdata folder is there with anything mentioning twhirl inside.
If it's not then IDK what to tell you.
Good luck!

Thanks, but there is no .appdata folder in my home dir, or anything that mentions Twhirl. There is an "appdata" folder in .adobe/AIR, but it's empty. I cannot uninstall AIR through Synaptic, and I don't see an uninstall script, so that leaves me pretty stymied! -
Inappropriate?Still having the problem. Ubuntu 8.10, current Adobe Air 1.5, Twhirl 0.8.7. It just won't install. I've tried removing all of the air directories, etc but no luck
I’m frustrated

Inappropriate?I confirm that this problem is still happening. I've blown away every bit of AIR and twhirl and reinstalled from scratch. AIR refuses to install twhirl, saying "the AIR file is damaged" for both twhirl-0.8.7.air and twhirl-0.8.7-air11.air.
However, I just happily installed TweetDeck through their recommended install approach, so my AIR setup is fine.
I’m impatient

Inappropriate?I had this problem as well and finally managed to get Twhirl working on Ubuntu 8.10. I have to mark both Twhirl and AIR for *complete* removal in synaptic and then delete AIR's .appdata directory. (It does not seem to be enough to just uninstall AIR from the applications menu) After that I was able to reinstall AIR and then get Twhirl to install successfully.
I’m happy

Inappropriate?Hi, I am a Mac OS X user, just installing Twirl and Air for the first time. Twirl installs, but does not sign-in to my account. It does not bring up the password dialog box. I suspect it is the Air app, because it had initially complained about the air file being damage. I un-installed both and re-installed. Still same problem.
