laconi.ca got no avatar love

Am using thwirl to access my own laconica instance (running 0.6.1) and it works fine, but I am not getting any avatars through. Thwirl seems to work fine against identi.ca, so am wondering what magic is being done there. Has anyone got a local laconi.ca+twhirl with avatars working?
