twhirl 0.8.7-linux now broken due to Adobe Air 1.5 linux self upgrade
twhirl not loading now as Adobe Air 1.5 self upgraded.
Looks like 0.8.7-linux version was hard coded to Air 1.1

The problem seemed to have fixed by removing the traces for AIR & Twhirl from these directories & using these terminal commands:
1) I uninstalled Twhirl using this command:
sudo dpkg -S /opt/*
It gave me a list of installed AIR apps. I'm not sure if they're all the same on each system, but my result was:
adobeair1.0: /opt/Adobe AIR
de.makesoft.twhirl.0ea062bc275e7ed1e6ec3762effd73c7158adf33.1: /opt/twhirl
2) Using the results the terminal gave me, I entered the command:
sudo dpkg -P de.makesoft.twhirl.0ea062bc275e7ed1e6ec3762effd73c7158adf33.1
3) I uninstalled AIR from the option located under "Applications > Accessories > Adobe AIR Uninstaller"
4) Once that was done, I went back to terminal & entered these commands in order:
rm -rf /opt/Adobe\ AIR
rm -rf $HOME/.adobe $HOME/.macromedia
sudo rm -rf /root/.adobe /root/.macromedia
5) I went to my HOME folder (Places > Home Folder) & unhid the files & folders (CTRL+H)
6) I navigated to the "./appdata" folder. In here I deleted these 2 folders:
"Adobe" & "de.makesoft.twhirl.0EA062BC275E7ED1E6EC3762EFFD73C7158ADF33.1"
7) Once that was done, I installed Adobe AIR 1.5 & then Twhirl 0.8.7 (the regular one, not the 0.8.7-linux version). The Twhirl app is now working fine.

Inappropriate?I was able to get twhirl 0.8.7 working with Adobe Air for Linu 1.5 by first removing both packages and then reinstalling from scratch. Adobe has some instructions for that.
My problem is that I can no longer sign into Identica although that other service works fine.
I’m wishing identica worked
-
Inappropriate?I was able to get twhirl 0.8.7 and Adobe Air Linux 1.5 playing together by removing all old packages and reinstalling the new ones. (on Ubuntu 8.10).
My problem is that I can no longer sign into identi.ca although that other service is working for me.
I’m wanting to dent as well as tweet.

Adobe's old instructions for removing air should still be valid. -
Inappropriate?ok - so if I remove all the old air files and twhirl then reinstall both it works again. also lost the nice remember password feature (was working nicely with kde wallet)
I’m ok
-
Inappropriate?I was able to update to Air1.5 from 1.1beta with no problems using adobe's self-updater.
Received an error message saying twhirl installer was corrupted when i tried to "upgrade" twirl to the 1.5version
Used synaptic package manager, searched for twhirl, and marked the package for removal
tried using the flash installer on the main page afterwards, installed with no problems and twhirl is running great.
Thanks twhirl devs, yall are doing a great job!
I’m impressed adobe responded so quickly

Inappropriate?Ok, so I am having a similar issue. I upgraded Adobe AIR Linux to 1.5 earlier today. I removed Twhirl 0.8.7-linux to install the regular 0.8.7 (because I assumed 0.8.7-linux was coded for AIR 1.1).
Now Twhirl is acting up royally on my Ubuntu Linux system. AIR is version 1.5, Twhirl is 0.8.7. Everytime I booted the program, it would ask for my Twitter password, even though I marked "remember". When I go to the "accounts" settings, my Twitter name isn't available. The only way I can see it is if I add another account. But then I cannot delete either accounts!
Now when I start Twhirl, it asks me to choose an account...But none are viewable. I have to type in my Twitter name as if I am adding it, just so my accounts can be available.
I tried uninstalling AIR 1.5 & Twhirl. I followed the steps provided in the link that Mr. Adams posted in his first post. Those instructions didn't help resolve the issue. I tried looking for the file(s) that contain the settings for Twhirl, but I couldn't obtain them. I was planning on deleting it, to see if the program goes back to default.
I’m frustrated. Wish I left AIR + Twhirl alone...

Inappropriate? How can we ensure that we have completely removed Twhirl? Even if I remove the package and also rm -rf /opt/twhirl, and then reinstall, Twhirl still remembers my settings, so I'm obviously not deleting everything.
The behavior I'm seeing now is that Twhirl starts up, but doesn't remember my password for Twitter. Also, no accounts appear in the settings dialog until I re-add my identica account, at which point my twitter account also appears on the list. Likewise the settings for my identica profile are not being saved.
I’m contemplating reinstalling my entire operating system.

Inappropriate?I've got the same problem until my dear ubuntu ask me to make make a partial update because of a problem in my packages (and delete something with thwirl in the name).
It's work now. -
Inappropriate? So I downgraded AIR to 1.1 & reinstalled Twhirl 0.8.7-linux again. It's working fine now. I will upgrade to AIR 1.5 when this little issue is resolved.
-
Inappropriate?I had the same problem. After removing the old files an deleting .adobe and .macromedia it works again.
I have the problem with the not remembered passwords for a long time. Long before I updated to twhirl 0.8.7. And long before Air 1.5.
I’m undecided

Have you looked at ownership and permissions of the files related to twhirl? I'm wondering if, for some reason, twhirl isn't able to write preferences to the accounts file? -
@Thomas Where are the specific files located? -
I'm not running twhirl on linux, so I'll have to poke around. I'm buried in a different project right now, so I'm hoping maybe someone from the linux twhirl community could jump in and answer this one? -
The twhirl-specific data are stored in a folder under ~/.appdata. It's a long strange foldername with "twhirl" in it. On my system it is called
de.makesoft.twhirl.0EA062BC275E7ED1E6EC3762EFFD73C7158ADF33.1
The folder and the file accounts.xml is read- and writable for twhirl. And twhirl writes successfuly to this file when terminating (see log below).
But I don:t think that twhirl is writing the password to this file. When I installed twhirl the system asked me to grant access to the keyring of the system. And I granted it. Does twhirl/Air use he keyring. Or does it use another mechanism?
In twhirl.log may access-errors have been logged. The error changed over the time:

I also move the folder and twhirl started from the scratch. It generated the folder again, but the problems occured again. -
I think I should open the password-problem as additional problem, cause it is not Air 1.5 related. -

Syphon, thanks for that. Your instructions pretty much follow what I've found to be successful -- viz., a complete reinstall of Air and Twhirl. The key step that I had been missing before was step 6 to remove the ./appdata folder from the home folder, which will clean out preferences/passwords from any previous installs. In fact the next time that Twhirl gives me problems I might try this step first. -
Inappropriate? As multiple people have already mentioned above, uninstalling/reinstalling AIR and Twhirl (0.8.7 not 0.8.7-linux) will resolve the issues caused by the upgrade.
I followed the removal instructions from here (Specifically the 5th comment): http://www.downloadsquad.com/2008/12/...
The key statement I used there was:
sudo dpkg -P $(dpkg -l | grep adobeair | awk -F" " '{print $2}')
This allowed me to see that there were AIR applications with dependencies that I had to remove before it would let me remove air using dpkg. I just modified the statement above and replaced "adobeair" with "twhirl" and it removed the dependency.
Please note what I mention above applies to distros that use dpkg (Ubuntu, etc), instructions for distros that use rpm are also included in the link mentioned above.
