URL lengthening in tool-tips
It would be great if I could hover over a shortened link in Twhirl and have a tooltip pop-up with the long version of the address, so that I can know what I'm about to click on. Ideally this would work with multiple shortening services, so that however a URL was shortened, I'm not clicking blind.

There's a jquery plugin you could use or modify to do exactly what you describe.
It works with all the popular services (adding more all the time).

I saw this yesterday, but I use Chrome, not FF, and I specifically use Twhirl for my twitter reading, so this doesn't help me too much, unfortunately.

I use chrome too when on windows - looking forward to when I can write plugins for it.
I'd mistaken you for a Seesmic representative - those guys could make use of the jquery plugin or the json api to easily implement this on their site - and I hope they do!
I also use twhirl - and would hope they will also use this service to improve their great product.
