Why does twhirl disappear?
Twhirl was running and then just went away. When I try to restart it, it will not start...nothing happens. I had no problems w/the program until this morning.

Inappropriate?Hi lisa,
Can you tell me which OS and version of twhirl you're running?
I’m ready to help
-
Ubuntu 8.10 with Twhirl 0.9
I believe it's an AIR issue, I've had Spaz running with no display window too (I see my 'beam' animation for a new - yet invisible window) -
Inappropriate?Windows XP SP2
Twhirl u 0.8.1
My computer has been rebooted and I am able to load twhirl again. This happened this morning...right after booting up, it worked and then after awhile it's gone. -
Inappropriate?Same problem with Vista SP1 32bits FR, AIR 1.01 and Twhirl 0.8.1. No window, no tray icon.
I tried: reboot, deleting my user profil folder of Twhirl, deleting ELS folder, uninstall/reinstall Twhirl. Sometimes, for an unknown
reason, Twhirl decide to appear... -
Inappropriate?Jamy your problem sounds very like mine - perhaps I should just continue reloading and deleting.
I’m frustrated

Inappropriate?Lola > What do you do to make Twhirl work ?
-
Inappropriate? This video show's how to solve the issue with AIR on mac. (It's not directly an issue with Twhirl but the current version of AIR.)
1. Right click on the Twhirl icon in the dock.
2. Select, "Reset Windows"
I’m happy to help

Inappropriate?I had the same problem when I used twhirl.
Windows XP sp2
It worked fine at first then as time went on, a message box appear
about twhirl not functioning properly (send/dont send report)
rebooted my computer 20 times (gave up eventually), then reformatted my disk. It was probably because of adobe air. I even tried reinstalling adobe air before reformatting but it gives the same error as twhirl.
I’m frustrated

Inappropriate?I see the same on Windows XP sp2 when I minimize Twhirl. There is nothing in the tray or taskbar to click to get it back. It reappears when a tweet comes in. Version is u.0.8.1, just installed yesterday.
-
Inappropriate?Roger nailed the issue. Anything that minimizes Twhirl causes it to disappear from Windows. However, Windows Task Manager says that it's still running, so you can't start another one up. However, you can click (once) on the Twhirl logo in the tray; that brings the GUI back.
-
Inappropriate? Some times in XP it disappears from the tray too. I just ctrl alt del to get the task manager up, manually end the program, and then open it back up, works every time
-
Inappropriate?I just had this problem for the first time on my Mac, and the solution fixes it, which is fantastic. I just thought I'd chime in that the same thing happens when you minimize the app on Ubuntu Linux. I had just chalked it up to AIR being alpha-quality on Linux and didn't think anything of it 'til it happened on my Mac, too. Thanks for the solution, though!
I’m thankful

Inappropriate? Why does Twhirl disappear? No window, no tray icon. Who cares? Here’s how to fix it.

I’m happy
-
Inappropriate?CJCraft's tip was a good try, but did not work for me. I tried both the standard procexp and procexp64 (I'm on Vista x64). It says twhirl.exe has no visible windows.
I’m frustrated
-
hmmmm, sorry to hear you're still having trouble. Any screen shots you can post here or send to info@twhirl.org would be very helpful. -
Inappropriate?Same problem here. The process is visible in task list or in process explorer. The 'window' menu in process explorer is grey ; no twhirl window, no tray icon, nothing. Tried to uninstall/reinstall twhirl, reboot, etc.. Spaz, who is also using Air works fine. I'm using vista 32 ultimate.
I’m frustrated
-
shadock, I hope you see the comment I left for ckindel above. -
Yes, same problem, and image like below \/ -
Inappropriate?I'm having the disappearing twhirl issue, too. Running on Windows XP sp2, twhirl version 0.8.4. It shows up in the task manager, but there's no icon in the systray and the windows never pop up.

Hope the image helps somewhat. As you can see, it's not in the systray, even though it's running, and it's not an open window, either.
I’m sad
-
Inappropriate? Thanks for the info, please keep the detailed reports coming. We're trying to reproduce this locally so we can work on a solution.
-
I wish I had more info on how to reproduce it, but it literally just started happening out of the blue. Twhirl works fine on my two other computers (one Mac, one Vista), but as far as I can tell, there wasn't any specific thing that lead to this current issue. And I've got no problem loading up Spaz or some other Adobe Air twitter client -- I just don't like any of those other ones :) -
Well, I really appreciate you taking to share the information you do have. It really does help out. If you do have a moment, I would be curious to know if you have any anit-virus software running. (sometimes those mess with non-virusy applications) -
Sure, no problem! On the computer twhirl isn't working on I'm running a network distributed version of Symantic Antivirus. On the Vista PC that twhirl DOES work on I'm running Norton 360. And on the Mac, well, not running any anti-virus at all and having no problem with Twhirl. -
Running the latest version of Twhirl on a Vista Ultimate x64 machine. It worked marvelously for 1 day and then disappeared. When I execute the program it shows up in the process tab of task manager, but no window appears and the icon never shows up in the notification area. I've tried restarting, as well as manually ending the process and executing again, but nothing seems to work. Also tried disabling Avast, but this had no effect either. As others have said, Spaz works fine, but Twhirl really is quite a bit nicer.
Not sure if this helps, but the night it disappeared I had left it running (minimized to the notification area). When I woke up in the morning it was gone.
Wish I could help more. I'll install Twhirl on my wife's PC (nearly identical to mine) and see if this happens again. -
OK, now I'm really confused. So far it's running fine on my wife's PC, and when I rebooted my machine (about the 5th time since this Twhirl problem began) Twhirl decided to work! This seems very random. Antivirus is running, so it's definitely not that. The only thing different about this restart from the last was that I had just run CCleaner's registry clean. Not sure what could have caused the issue. I'll see how long Twhirl sticks around this time. -
Inappropriate?I've exactly the sames symptomps as described. It seems for me to be harder to launch twhirl just after a reboot. After some time, it's better.
i've just tried a new thing this morning which can be interessant :
In my PC 'My documents' is mapped on an external truecrypt volume : if this volume is not mounted twhirl seems to never launch correctly (appears in the process list, but neither in the tray or in the window). If this volume is mounted (i.e. My documents is accessible), twhirl launches correctly.
I'm not sure if it's the only reason, because I think I had some problem before with my documents already mounted, but i'll look after that.
Tom.
I’m unsure but happy

Actually, my twhirl started working as well and under the same circumstances. We got a new server at my office, which is where everyone "My Documents" folder is kept, and whoever went around and remapped all of our My Documents folders to the new server drive only remapped the SHORTCUT on my desktop. In any case, I realized this when installed iTunes 8, which wouldn't open because it said My Documents folder didn't exist. Once I fixed that, iTunes work, and after reading Shadock's reply, I just opened up twhirl without a hitch!
It would seem the issue lies w/ the My Documents folder then. -
This was definitely the fix for me. Fixing the location of "My Documents" so that it points to a location that actually exists fixes the problem. Note the symptom as the same - the "Window" menu within Process Explorer was greyed out.
So on the Windows platform this might be two issues:
1) AIR issue with minimising windows
2) profile issue with inaccessible My Documents location -
Inappropriate?I have the same problem with Vista. Process starts but no windows og sys tray. But I have discovered something new. I start DTaskManager and right click on twhirl.exe and click on Reveal All Windows I get 2 windows up as you can see on the image... maybe this can help? One windows with the title Msg and the other MMDEVAPI Device ...
Hope we all can together find a solution for this problem.

Inappropriate?I have now found out a solution for me regarding this problem. It seems like I've had some problems with offline files/folders on my Vista computer lately. My folder Documents have been targeted to a network drive on a server at my work and I've set up a sync between Documents and the network drive. Lately the drive have become offline and I haven't been able to access Documents at all. Now it seems like twhirl needs to access Documents/My Documents to start, for when I connected to my work and got access to the network drive, and made the Documents/My Documents available, twhirl started just fine.!! =)
So, my question now is, why the need of access to Documents/My Documents to get twhirl to work ?? -
I have the same problem... I dont know what to do except only use Twhirl when Im at work, which sucks -
Inappropriate?Fixed the problem:
1)Kill the running process "twhirl"
2)Find the shortcut on your desktop and right click on that and choose properties.
3) Find "Run" and change that from "Normal" to "Expanded" and click ok.
4) Double Click on the shortcut now and it should work! -
Wow! Good find!
