Effect on followers when making account private.
What happens to my followers if I make my account from public to private? Will they be locked out and have to request to follow me again? (If this is the case, I would like to be able to batch-approve my current followers upon making my account private.)

When you change your account from Public to Private, you will maintain all of your current listeners. Any future listeners will need to request to listen to you, then need to be approved by you.
