I suspect that maybe you are listening to too many people. You should listen to the people that you would want to get sms/email notifications from. These are the people that you always want to hang out with. If you don't care enough to get notified, then do you really need to listen to them? You can still find all of the people you aren't listening to from the everybody page or the nearby people link.

also, maybe when we have the API ready, someone can write a TweetDeck style app that allows you to "group" users.
