Even Laptop don't always have the net...
Hi!
First I have to say that I found your site GREAT!
I was browsing your website on my little laptop and started to read some short stories and extract from different novels. As I carry my laptop everywhere there is not always a wireless access available for me to connect on so when I move to a location where the connection is bad or just enavailable (the bus for exemple) I can't use your website.
I was wondering if it could be possible to have an application developped for the PC too so that we could download and store what we are reading?
I understand that your main target are the "mobile" devices but with all the Netbooks who are on the market (and pretty cheap too) I think beeing "mobile" is no longer restricted to cellphones.
Thanks a lot!

Inappropriate?Hi Ryphna,
We have an update on this issue, and it's good news for you!
At the moment, it is not possible for laptop users to access content offline. However, as you note, we recognize that more and more people are indeed going to start carrying netbooks, particularly as they become more affordable. As such, we are in the planning stages of developing an application specifically for netbooks which would allow for both offline and online reading.
So yep, we're working on this one!
Thank you for your question.
I’m confident

Inappropriate? There should be an application specifically developed for laptops and notebooks so people who purchased an entire shortcovers book on their notebook computer can continue to read the book offline, for instance, on an airplane.
I feel somewhat ripped off -- I paid for a shortcovers book so I could read a few chapters on my notebook computer while travelling. I was trying to reduce space in my luggage, thereby not having to carry books around. There were almost no indication anywhere in the shortcovers website which explicitly stated that we could not read books offline on notebook computers. Knowing this key fact prior to purchasing any of the books would have been very useful!
And it so happens I don't carry a Blackberry, iPhone or any of those devices, and I have no plans to spend a lot of money on those. Shortcovers is a great idea, but I suggest that to maintain good customer service from start to end, "little" facts such as this be made more clearer right at the beginning before any customer purchases any book.
Thanks.
I’m frustrated

We will amend our documents on the site to ensure it is clear that offline reading on computers or laptops is not currently possible. We appreciate your feedback on this issue. -
Hi, I've noticed that it has been four months since this reply, and yet it has taken me an hour of meticulously searching through the shortcovers site in order to find information about this very matter. No where, not even in any of your help articles, is the issue about reading material offline addressed. I was glad to find this thread to verify my suspicion. It would be beneficial to future patrons of this site to have the information clearly stating that content cannot be read offline on laptops or computers right now more visible right off the bat, even if the technology to do so is in progress. -
Inappropriate? In addition to being able to access the books we buy offline, it would also be nice to know that if shortcovers goes out of business, I'd still be able to read the books I bought.
Not that I think you'll necessarily fail, but many people have been burned by exactly this sort of issue, such as those who purchased music from Microsoft's pre-Zune music store.
I won't buy any media -- be it books, music, or movies -- that require the continued existence of a website in order for me to enjoy what I've paid for.
I’m cautious

Inappropriate?Thank you for your question. The points you raise are valid and we are working on a solution where our customers can download their content from the web so they can read it offline, and not need to return to our live website. I also wanted to point out that our service is not just web-based. A core part of our experience is our mobile platforms and we are working to enhance these everyday. Right now on your mobile you can download content to your phone and read it offline or online, and therefore not be dependent on a connection to read your books – they are resident on your device.

this is one of the best points

Inappropriate? Thanks for the correction. I have played around a bit with the mobile application for Blackberry, but it wasn't clear to me if it was downloading the whole thing or loading small portions live. Sorry for the confusion.

Inappropriate?Hi Sana,
Your suggestion is duly noted. Thanks so much for your feedback! -
Inappropriate?specifically for mobile gadgets... best path to this may be to port the "adobe digital editions" software which you already use for the pc. This app has already been ported to many ebook reader hardware so it can't be too much of a stretch to make it work on blackberries, iphones, etc.
