What is Sim On Demand, and Why not running your sim 24x7 makes sense.

3D Virtual worlds as a technology is in the early stages of evolution. And most of the time you and your team are only experimenting with it. During the experimental phase you dont want to spend on dedicated hosting and run you Sims on always on 24x7 mode. Amazon's EC2's processor instance on demand could be leveraged to run your Sim only when you need it. Sim On Demand is a service + a launcher application that makes it easy to run OpenSimulator software on Amazon EC2.

When you run things on EC2, until recently there was a problem of loosing all the data when the EC2 instance is shutdown. Now with the Elastic Block Store(EBS) integration, it is possible to save the state in EBS. Sim On Demand seamlessly integrates EC2, EBS and provides a clickable interface to Start, Stop and Restard Opensimulator on EC2 instance.

In terms of presentation of your Sim too, it might be a good idea not to run it on a 24x7 always on mode. It is like using an auditorium in real life. You book it and use it only occasionally.

In other words, Sim On Demand is continence of running a (your own)local Opensimulator instance along with the performance of EC2.
