Comments disappearing at random
One of our blogger has been experiencing problems with comments disappearing at random. It seems like comments get published fine, but subsequently vanish from the Typepad system. Unfortunately, we haven't been able to keep a log of these as they disappear totally randomly, however, it appears that, occasionally, published comments disappear from the Typepad system, while at other times, the comments posted never materialise in our moderation queue. We use an advanced template.
This has been an ongoing problem for weeks now, and we've got in touch with Typepad about it quite many times. However, they don't seem to be able to replicate the issue and therefore haven't been able to provide a solution for it. Despite a few code updates from Typepad since they have rolled out their new system, we are still experiencing this issue very regularly.
I found this thread on here (How can we get back the comments on all our blogs?) which seems to mention a similar issue, however with some differences, hence why I decided to create a new post.
This issue is likely to impact on the credibility of the blog, and on the traffic and comment rate, and we are very keen on this issue being resolved as soon as possible.
Hopefully, someone here will have experienced something similar and might be able to provide some answers.
Thank you.

Inappropriate?Hi anmblog,
We're very sorry that you're experiencing this issue. Can you let us know the URL of the weblog account where your help tickets were opened? I'd like to take a look at those to see where they stand. Thanks! -
Inappropriate?Colleen,
Thank you very much for your reply. The blog in question is here: http://hitchensblog.mailonsunday.co.uk/
Our account is ANM Blog.
The ticket ID is 43CPYJJAM7RE
I hope this will help -
Inappropriate?hi there - is this happening when you get a certain number of comments?
-
Inappropriate? Not as far as we've noticed. It seems to be totally random. We haven't been able to identify any type of pattern with this, which makes it all the more difficult for you to identify I know, but it makes it all the more frustrating for us
Thank you for looking into this -
Hi anmblog,
I would love to help out, but I need to understand what's going on first. You mentioned that "it seems like comments get published fine, but subsequently vanish from the Typepad system".
Can you walk me through how you notice that the comments vanish? -
Inappropriate?Geysa,
Thank you for your reply.
It is a bit of a difficult one as I am not the person who is blogging, so I only get noticed that something's gone wrong when he notices it. Unfortunately, he rarely can provide any information, apart for a vague estimate of when he tried to reply to a message for instance.
One of the cases he mentioned, which prompter us to get in touch on 28 Jan 2009, was described as follow:
-----
One of our regular bloggers noticed tha his most recent post (http://hitchensblog.mailonsunday.co.u..., posted on Saturday 24 Jan at 7:19pm), had around 30 comments on Monday, but only 14 yesterday, although today, the comment count is up to 55 currently.
No change was made to the settings or design of the blog over the weekend or this week.
Could you inform us to whether there has been a problem on Typepad’s side with this, or what could be the root of the problem?
Regards

Mr Hitchens doesn't actually interact with the system himself, that is, he has someone posting for him (not me as I only interact with our blogs as a designer), and doesn't moderate his own comments. He however replies to comments posted as response to his posts, and does so via the same form used by his readers.
He has described in the past cases where he'd seen a reply, couldn't reply at the time, but made a note to reply later, but then couldn't find that post again.
We use pagination for the comments, in batches of 25, and he is aware of this, so regularly toggles between sections of comments.
I am sorry I am not able to provide any more specific details about this issue, and I realise that without that, you will not be able to reproduce the issue, but if this happens to us, it is very likely to be happening elsewhere, and I have actually seen very similar issues discussed on this very forum, so I would suspect that this is a known issue with Typepad.
Thank you. -
Hi anmblog,
are you still experiencing these issues? We've launched a few improvements to our commenting system in the past weeks and I wanted to check if things are OK now. -
Inappropriate?Hi Geysa,
I haven't heard anything from our blogger for a while, so I can only assume this issue has now been resolved. I will post here if the problem occurs again.
Thank you for your help with this
I’m thankful
