Just adding that loss of the ability to convert templates is a *huge* inconvencience. It was such a great feature before, but now it is almost impossible to work in advanced.
The whole idea is to have every possible element that appears on blog adjustable. For instance, container width and column width are very limited, and this should be open to adjustment, not locked into a few choices.
At least with conversion, I can get a basic blog set up, let conversion do the dirty work, and then tweak each element. Now, coming back to work on an advanced template makes days of work instead of hours.

Inappropriate?We've gotten a lot of feedback about this and our development team is working on improving the flow for creating an Advanced Template. I don't know the status of that currently but improvements are definitely in the pipeline.
-
Does it mean that when changing from Basic to Advanced Templates you have to start it all over again? Well, I was considering upgrading my account, but I think I will abandon this idea... -
You sort of do have to start all over again but it isn't as hard as I thought it was going to be. It took me a few hours and most of that was spent acclimating myself to the new template syntax. One thing that does seem to get lost is the ability to drag and drop new and existing layouts around--or to change layouts, (say from two column right to three column left). Those are two things that I think would be cool--1) to be able to convert your existing basic template to an advanced one and 2) to be able to continue to use drag-and-drop for things like widgets or to re-arrange things around. Blogger allows this--if you switch to a custom template, you still have a layout wireframe view where you can add, remove or change the positioning of elements within sidebars. -
Inappropriate?Hi Zoile,
What kind of changes are you having to turn to advanced templates to make? I'd be great to know the minor changes for which people require advanced templates so that we can build these options into the basic templates. -
Nick,
Thanks for your response. On the top of the individual post pages, I want to remove the navigation links that read:
« "this post's title" | Main | "this post's title" »
I used the ticket system for this and was told by support that this can only be removed with an Advanced Template. Due to this, I upgraded to Pro and then realized the 'Convert to Advanced" feature no longer existed. Bummer. Is there another way around this?
Also, it's not necessarily a minor change, but I want to add some javascipt so the photo switches when customers scroll over buttons numbered 1, 2, 3 below the photo on a Page, but this can't be done without inserting the
javascript tag within the head tag in the index page. I want the site to look exactly the same as I have it designed with one of the Drag-and-Drop templates, just with this minor addition...so it's inconvenient to have to do an Advanced Template and redo all the code when I want it to look identical. Copying and pasting the css code from the Drag-and-Drop doesn't work. When I did that the site had similarities to the Drag-and-Drop but wasn't a replica of it.
Wehhh, that was a lot of info...hope that makes sense?! -
Thanks Zoile! They do make sense, and we'll take them into consideration when thinking about how we can improve drag and drop designs in the future. -
Hi Zolie,
On my blog I removed those navigation links using Custom CSS, like this:
.content-nav {
display: none;
}
Until this can be made an option in "Organize Content" this is an easier workaround than switching everything to advanced templates. -
Inappropriate?I've also heard lots of desire to be able to toss a little HTML or javascript up in the header, to do things like have a flickr slideshow rolling in your banner or add little js tricks like the one zoile mentioned.

Inappropriate?Yes please. I've been asked to add a category pulldown to a blog that is currently drag and drop template based. As far as I know the only way to add the pulldown to the blog is to recreate the whole blog as an advanced template and then add the pulldown. That seem overcomplicated to me.
Of course, I'd be very happy to hear other ways to add a category pulldown if there are any. -
Ryan, you could create the menu manually. You'd just need the URL for each Category page and the tips here: http://kb.typepad.com/id/673
It might be time consuming when you first set it up but after that, you'd just have to add any new category links as they're added to the weblog. -
Thanks, Colleen, that's a perfectly good suggestion. However, it's impractical for my non-technical client who would need to be able to add categories via the Typepad UI and then have the links automagically appear in the menu. -
Ryan, do you think that your client might be able to provide you with some of the category concepts for you to help them build this, and you could use it as an opportunity to help them SEO-friendly up their category pages too? -

Inappropriate?I too would like this option; I've not been using typepad long enough to have had it at all, but all I'm really looking to do is to switch the post name with the blog title on the post page, which I gather others are doing with advanced templates. This is for an organization's blog and I don't have the option really of making the blog name shorter, but when the posts show up in search engine results all I get is a truncated version of the blog name as the result heading.
-
sorry for the delay in response on this one! you can change the post URL now in either advanced or basic templates. Here's more:

Inappropriate?any rough timelines for getting the automatic conversion to advanced templates done? also I notice lots of different tutorials for advanced templates, is there one complete tutorial?
-
A good place to start would be with the docs here:

I hope this helps! -
Inappropriate?A vote to bring back 'Convert to Advanced Templates' from me as well, the present way of working with the templates is adding greatly to my workload.
-
Inappropriate?I agree! There should be an easier solution to converting to Advanced Templates from Basic Templates. Also, from the beginning, users should be able to make a choice. I know that when I signed my daughter up for a TypePad account of her own we wanted to start her off in Advanced Templates, however, we couldn't do that easily and instead had to create it under "Saved Designs" first. A lot of extra steps that seem unnecessary.
-
Inappropriate?I don't think "The company implemented this idea"
-
my apologies - that was a mistake, probably my own! -
Inappropriate?I can't see this has been implemented either. Is it still in beta and hasn't been rolled out yet? Is so, when?
I’m unsure
-
Inappropriate?All - we apologize for the confusion, the status of this topic was changed by mistake.
We do appreciate your feedback about this issue and are taking all of this into consideration. -
Inappropriate?I switched from Wordpress to Typepad hoping to get a better handle on the design of my blog with greater ease. I'm starting to think this was a mistake. There has to be a simpler way to maintain the sidebars once switching to Advanced templates. I should be able to do just as I would with one of the basic templates and click a button or create a new typelist and simply tell it where to go in the WYSISYG "Organize your content" page under Design.
What's even more ridiculous is the fact that a drop down box for archives and categories isn't a standard option when displaying archives on your blog. You have to switch your entire blog to an advanced design to get this feature. Sure, you could bother with hardcoding it into your template and having to go back in and add new months and new categories via code. This just seems so basic.
I’m disappointed.
-
Inappropriate?I'm totally bummed this feature was removed. Formerly I'd rough out a design using the WYSIWYG tools and then finish in Advanced. Mostly I have to integrate the look into the clients web site but getting all the widgets and layout done in a few minutes cut development time by about 80% compared to starting from scratch.
