I would like a blockquote function in the editor.
We need to do a lot of quoting from other sites, and I don't like needing to train our authors in how to go into HTML mode to do this. The purpose of a CMS is so that people do not have to be taught HTML
There is far too much uncredited quoting by blogs in general, and including this in the editor would encourage people to be aware of when they are taking content from other sites

Inappropriate?Hi GoodBuddy!
The new editor has an "indent" option but not a blockquote feature currently. Our engineers are looking at adding that in but I don't have a timeline just yet. I've marked this topic as an Idea so they know to keep this on the list of feature requests. -
I was aware of the indent function. This option moves the content into a div tag and styles it with an indent. While this looks similar to what a blockquote tag would be with the default CSS settings, it is not something you would want to override with custom CSS. Unless you add a class name to the div tag that is created. -
Inappropriate?I second the request. It baffles me why Typepad removed this frequently used formatting option. It's one of the many reasons why I use Windows Live Writer now. The new Typepad Compose is going backwards, not forwards, taking away features and adding steps. I don't get it.
I’m shaking my head

I should add that the good thing about blockquote is that you can style it from the stylesheet. You can't do that with indent so you're stuck with whatever the default style is or you have to manually style each instance of it. More work to do the same thing is a step backwards. -
I am relatively new to TypePad. You are saying that they used to have blockquote function tags in the editor and they removed them? -
Yes, it used to be that when you hit the quote button, it added a blockquote tag, which you could then style with the stylesheet if you chose. Now it inserts a span tag with margin attributes, so you can't control the indent with the stylesheet. If you want to change the indent or make it a blockquote, you have to do each one manually, so it's a whole lot more work now. Unless you switch to Windows Live Writer. :) -
Inappropriate?I agree, but can't you add that manually with HTML?
-
Yes you can manually add blockquote tags with HTML mode (and I do). The issue is that when the site I have goes live (in four more weeks) we will have multiple authors with multiple skill levels submitting content. I dread teaching them HTML plus wonder greatly what would happen if they make a typo.
I am just putting forth what will make the system better for my organizations needs. It would certainly be easy to implement, since the javascript would be the same for what is used for the indent feature -- just change the HTML that is inserted. I juggest quotation marks for the icon. The only reason for resistance that I can see is that the people who insert code tags would then want to get satisfaction. But people who insert code are more knowledgeable about HTML than people who run community based organizations. -
You might want to try getting your guest authors to use Windows Live Writer. If they're not used to blogging it might be a good gentle introduction. And it uses blockquotes. And it has true, custom styled WYSIWYG editing and preview. It's ideal for beginners. -
Inappropriate?Hi all -
Thanks for sharing your feedback about this feature. Our Product team is well aware that many users would like a separate blockquote button. I don't know the status of when it might be added back in just yet, but it's definitely high on the features lists. -
Inappropriate?Definitely a good idea, I've been adding the blockquote code manually for a while... (I have styled it with custom CSS)
I’m excited
