WPS and protected wifi networks
For skyhooks wps to work, do you need to be connected to a wifi network? For example; if I walk in the city centre where a lot of protected wifi networks are can I use the locate me function on my iPhone? I won't be connected with any of these wifi networks but is my iPhone able to grab the mac address and use it for the locate me function? Thanks!

Inappropriate? You do not need to be able to connect to any of the networks in order for us to determine a location. A protected network still broadcasts its MAC address, even if the SSID is not being broadcast.
Depending on the device though you will still need some type of internet connection to make the call back to the server. So in the case of the iPhone it can use its EDGE connection to make the call. The iPod touch will need to be connected to one of the networks so that it has a data connection.
It also important to note that on the iPhone you have to make sure Wi-Fi is on in order to use Skyhook's positioning platform.
Hope that helps clarify.

Inappropriate? So when I'm in new york for example I can locate myself even when there are only protected wifi networks if I have an edge connection of course? That's a great system then!

Inappropriate?yes, the iphone only needs an open connection to the internet, EDGE or GPRS and the wifi-module needs to be active to be able to scan...
