The most likely explanation is that at the time of acquiring geo data you dont have GPS signal. This is very frustrating for me too because of patcy coverage where I am based. If you are based in Manhattan then obviously this isn't the reason unless for whatever reason your phone cant get GPS signal (being in a cellar or whatever!)
Can you try going to a location which is known to receive good GPS and attempting to post a geo-tagged post?

tey going to maps and geo-locating - if maps cant geo-locate then neither can LifeCast.
One thing that may 'force' the phone to geo-locate is switching Wi-Fi off and then hopefully both Maps and LifeCast will start geo-locating.
